If anyone actually wanders up there, they will find the whole village decorated with strings of light, fish shaped lanterns, streamers, and kelp. Just past the North edge of the Village was a fair.

There was a large stage in the center of the fair, rides, a fortune teller, contests, games, a petting zoo, a fish exhibit, stalls, booths and everything else you can find at a fair.

"That may be an understatement. I've been called a glutton." Laharl, that isn't something people are normally proud of.

Seeing where she's headed, Laharl goes along agreeably enough, taking a few quick strides to make sure he's walking at her side rather than actually following.

"No more of a dump than the old place, at least."

[pendragon]

"A glutton," she repeats, unable to help but smile. No one's to call her a glutton to her face, but she know she's heard a few comments behind her back where they remarked about how much she could eat.

"I'm glad to hear."

Saber's starting to wonder if Laharl downplays everything in his wording. If not, it's better than the place not being worse than his usual.

Coming to the edge of the table, the knight waits for Laharl to sit first, and then she'll quickly join him.

It does take a lot for him to openly compliment something. He'd say he has high standards, but really he just enjoys being insulting.

Laharl plops himself down, setting the slushy down on the table and taking a bite out of his octopus-on-a-stick. "How's your place workin' out?"

[pendragon]

"I like it. It's quiet, large, and well-decorated."

There's a nod as Saber begins to chew on the thing on her stick. It tastes fishy, so it must be. She's just not sure exactly what it is.

[makainoou]

"It came pre-decorated? With what, fish paintings?"

It seems to be the only kind of decoration the locals understand. It's like they've never seen anything else in their lives but fish.

[pendragon]

Saber's snack was already gone as she looked to Laharl thoughtfully, finishing the last mouthful she had. Once her mouth was cleared, she shook her head with a subtle smile.

"Fortunately, no. It's decorated much as one would expect a luxury apartment to be."

[makainoou]

"Can't say I know what a luxury apartment is supposed to look like." Apartments aren't exactly standard living quarters in the Netherworld. "I guess I'll have to come check it out."

Laharl, did you just invite yourself over?

[pendragon]

"You may in the evenings from 6pm to 11pm. ..Any other time than that, and I may not be available."

Of course, she was home from 11pm to 7am, but.. that was Saber's dedicated sleeping time slot, and bothering her during that could be a very bad idea.

"So, Laharl. I was wondering about your title of Overlord. How is the ruling system in your Underworld?"

"What're you doing that you've got such an exact schedule?"

Laharl's definitely more of an evening person, so the time works for him, but he doesn't get where it's coming from.

"Ruling system?" Laharl rips a large bite out of the octopus. "The ruling system's I'm in charge. What d'you mean, exactly?"

[pendragon]

"I help with the Defense Force.. and I dislike being home. I grow restless."

His answer causes her to pause. He's in charge, and that's that? Well, a king could say the same, however..

"Do you have anyone who advises you? Do you make yourself available to listen to the general public if they wish it?"

Did Laharl decide to rule with absolute rule? He has said he was from the Underworld several times, perhaps that was the norm there.

Oh. He always forgets about the Defense Force since they haven't tried to kill him or anything, but it makes sense for her.

"I accept challenges at any time." That counts as 'making himself available,' right? "As for advisors..." He makes a face and then concedes, "I don't always listen to her, but Etna is my right-hand demon. She'd make a good Overlord if she ever managed to kill me."

Ever managed to kill me, Saber repeats in her mind. Yes, this Underworld definitely does sound quite demonic in its government and political styles.

"Are you born into the position of Overlord? Perhaps not, since it sounds like this Etna could kill you and become Overlord if she wanted?"

Normally, Saber would be quite aghast by hearing about this type of tyranny from anyone else. It was well beyond against any of her beliefs relating to how ruling should be. Laharl was from the Underworld, though, and Saber is a bit more hesitant to push her opinions in Vatheon where there are so many varying cultures.

This is why he likes Saber. There aren't many people in Vatheon who acknowledge Laharl as being from a culture where this kind of thing is perfectly acceptable. Most of them assume it's terrible and ought to be fixed, or that it's only Laharl who behaves this way.

"My old man was Overlord before me, so the throne was mine by right. But I defeated a lot of demons who wanted it for themselves. It's not a position you hold onto without the power to defend it."

[pendragon]

"I assume everyone in the Underworld lives a very cut-throat lifestyle?" Saber asks, wishing to confirm her suspicions. Having to defend your right to the throne.. Saber could see that. Anyone could have challenged her, but no one had until Mordred.

"I appreciate you divulging all of this information to me, Laharl. You're welcome to ask any questions in return."

Saber's finished her snack by then, but she's content to sit there and continue chatting with the lad. ..Thinking about it, Saber has no idea how old he is. She's fairly certain he's not human.

[makainoou]

"It's the only way to get ahead."

Laharl doesn't see anything special about telling her all this. It's a much better topic of conversation than most people get to, because of course he's basically talking about himself and his Netherworld and how awesome they are (from his point of view).

But hey, he'll indulge her and show some interest in return. "What were you king of anyway? Britain?"

ksjdlad i forgot that laharl kind of had ties to king arthur.

[pendragon]

"Aye. The late 5th and early 6th centuries, I held that title. During my reign, I was known as King Arthur."

There's a pause, and then she looks to Laharl curiously.

"You're not human, correct? Would you.. mind telling me your age?"

Saber hated to be intrusive, but surely this boy isn't actually the age he looks like and can claim he's an Overlord who has defeated many?

not that he knows about it exactly, but hopefully they'll piece it together. =3

Laharl blinks back at her over his slushy. That's earlier than he was expecting.

"1313. But I guess you're actually older than me, 'Arthur.' I've even heard stories about you."

[pendragon]

"Th-thirteen thirteen?" Saber asks, unable to help but show the surprise on her face. She quickly regains herself, and goes back to her usual collected self. "Is that considered young for your species?"

..Demons, would it be? Likely. There's a shake of the knight's head.

"I have only been alive and awake for twenty-four years, so that is what I consider myself. You have heard of me in your Netherworld.." Saber pauses, thinking about it, "I suppose stories of Excalibur and the Knights of the Round are everywhere."

[makainoou]

Laharl smirks at her reaction. She doesn't seem easy to faze, this one, so it feels like an accomplishment. "Young, sure. But it's not like I'm a child." More like a teenager.

"We pay attention to the human world, when it's entertaining. You were still pretty recent history when I was a kid..." His expression sobers momentarily, as he thinks on where he would have heard the stories from. Or from who. Then he shakes his head and asks, "Weren't you supposed to be a man?"

Of course it never occurred to him that 'king' is a man's title, but the character of King Arthur is a man.

[pendragon]

"A king is a man, so I simply acted as one."

Saber is certain she hasn't heard of demons that old in her own world. Perhaps his world is different in that regards, too. For 1313 to be only a young adult..

She's still quite perplexed by that, but she moves on.

"You look quite well for your age, then. I stopped aging at fourteen and am stuck at that physical state."

[makainoou]

Normally Laharl would accept that and move on, but there's still one aspect of this discrepency that he's not getting. "But there was a queen..."

He only shrugs at her remark on his appearance, although it's a big improvement on people telling him he looks like a child. Then again, that'd be a little hypocritical. "Stuck? Why, did someone curse you or something?"

"I did have my queen. She knew I was a woman, and became a queen to fill the role needed for the country."

Saber's throat tightens very briefly as the topic comes up, but she thinks nothing more of it and then smiles at Laharl's next question.

"When I pulled Caliburn, I became immortal. When the sword broke, the trend was continued by Excalibur's sheath, Avalon. Of course, now that I am a Heroic Spirit.. I still do not age."

[makainoou]

"So... you're not a lesbian." He thinks. After all, the role of a queen as far as the country is concerned is to be a stateswoman. Not that he's ever seen this in practice.

"I see. It was because of the sword, then. I figured you looked the age you died at, but I guess 24 looks older for humans."

[pendragon]

Saber's mouth opens as if she is about to retort to the 'lesbian' remark, but then she withdraws it. Honestly, she is even unsure of her own sexuality anymore. She usually feels as if she has none. It's never been of importance to her.

"I look quite young for a human. Near child-like."

[makainoou]

Well, that wasn't much of a confirmation. Not that it really matters, it's just... unexpected, somehow.

"Hm. Well, I wouldn't have taken you for a kid." Which probably isn't much of a surprise, considering his own height and appearance.
