[ Good evening, Ladies and Gentlemen of Vatheon— whatever your newfound stature may be, Prince, Princess, Knight, or Peasant, you will all receive a message on your SFC on the eve of Saturday regardless:

You are cordially invited to the castle for this evening's ball. In addition, you are all welcome to try and solve the riddle if it fancies you. It just may break the curse!

The invitation is unsigned, but its intentions are clear. Maybe you hadn't quite noticed the sizeable castle in the distance of the city that had sprung up, but this message would surely garner your attention toward it now.

Should you arrive at the castle, plenty of attractions await you:

Ballroom ❧ A very large and beautiful ballroom is lighted up, complete with a playing violin orchestra. While the curtains will be drawn during this event, there is a windowed view and exit on one side of the ballroom that leads to:

Smee's Rose Garden ❧ A broad and colorful spanse of a garden, complete with many paths and turns. Plenty of roses are arranged in great arches, which provide perfect little places should you need some privacy with your sweetheart. Anyone familiar will even tell you that the garden was purposefully designed for just that sort of thing.

The Riddle ❧ There is an inscription located on a noticeable plaque set in one of the garden's benches. It reads:

Two are necessary to break this curse
Riled up, upset, what kind of love?
Only this kiss will stop it from getting worse.
Look for a winged one is push comes to shove,
Look for a glance slightly dark,
Search for a pair in reluctant love.
One answers a call; that's your mark;
One longs for patria though adverse.

Dining Hall ❧ Connected to the ballroom is an extremely long hall that stretches as far as the eye can see, elegantly arranged as the dining area. Expensive and exquisite cuisine seem to be on the menu— try something new? Chances are you won't be eating from a selection such as this again anytime soon!

Dais ❧ There is a noticeable raised dais that is easily visible via any area within the ballroom. It's locked off from guests, though— what is it for...?

[He looks at her and then back at the riddle before he suddenly perks up and a look of realization dawns on his face.]

...Hey. You're right.

[He looks excited for a moment, his mouth twisting into a smile when suddenly it stops.]

But I guess that's really just for them.

[Indifferent expression and he feels a little strange. Oh curses. How he disliked you.]

So, I got a question for you. How do you give someone your heart?

I'm afraid I'm a terrible person to be asking that question.

[So he really was the one Shizuo kissed.]

But I would imagine... that you place your faith in them. That you consider that person before yourself. When that idea isn't scary anymore, then you could consider your heart given away.

[It's a terrifying idea and Zelda is NEVER going to do it herself.]

Hnn...I wasn't really planning on doing anything about it. But I was curious as how it'd be justified by someone.

[But he looks confused because-]

Wait, are you talking about love? The metaphorical sense of giving someone your heart?

You couldn't do so literally and live, could you? I admit that I am not an expert at human anatomy, but surely you are not that different from a Hylian.

[Seriously, guys. Why did you both think of giving someone your actual physical heart before thinking of love?!]

No, I guess not. You're right.

[WELL. He did try to cut it out in all fairness. Of course Izaya's going to jump to that conclusion.

...But.]

But just so you know, Zelda, I don't think that you give someone your heart like that. Not always. I mean sometimes you just give it away because you have no choice but to give it away. Isn't love the most unpredictable and violent thing in known world? You can't control when it comes and how its taken. I think that's why it's on the other side of hate so often. It makes one impulsive and so taken with emotion that everything else becomes blurry. Love is fascinating. It really is. And watching people be in love is even more interesting. The way they interact and portray their emotions. The way they grow so disgustingly dependent and rendered useless by the people they love.

[Tch. He doesn't even seem to be talking to Zelda anymore.]

Love seems so pointless to me. I could never love a human. They're so predictable. I think I'd get bored by the second date. And anyway, I'm not really interested in that kind of thing to begin with.

[Right. Zelda. He grins at her suddenly again, as if just remembering that he was still talking to her.]

But Valentine's Day is coming up and that's no way to talk about love with the emotion's holiday around the corner.

[She listens quietly as he starts to go on. Izaya is really a fascinating person. And he's exactly right. Love does render a person useless. It's part of the reason she sent Link back to his own time - she loved him, and she knew that she wouldn't be able to do the things that she must if he was nearby.

The fact that he feels the need to quantify that he could never love a human is even more interesting.]

It seems to be exactly the time to talk about it, don't you think? Whether your opinion is that it is worthwhile or not. I am curious though... why did you say that you could never love a human? Do you think you could love something else?

I suppose you're right.

[He somewhat tenses at that question. He's stated it plenty of times before that he could never love a human but no one ever really seemed to question the part where he said 'human'.

But Izaya merely tilts his head.]

Something else? What do you mean by something else?

[It's in Zelda's nature to ask questions, and she usually asks the right ones.]

Exactly that. If you can't love someone that you consider human, could you love someone that you do not consider to be so? Would they be less boring?

[Oh Zelda. You know too much and he doesn't really like that.

Izaya's not an idiot after all. And he has a feeling that she knows what's up. So he gives her a bit of a leveled stare.]

It's not that much to ask for someone who is unpredictable. A spontaneous lover is the best kind of lover. And when everyone is so predictable to you...Meeting the one person that isn't usually is a pretty elevating moment.

[And he smirks, perhaps a bit darkly to himself, and looks away from Zelda and elsewhere.]

Even if they're something of a monster. But there's really no healthy way to love a monster, now is there? Then again- it fits really. There's only one other thing a monster can handle and deal with. And that's another monster.

[She meets his stare evenly. She might know what's going on, but she's not going to name names. If he doesn't want to talk about it, he can just pretend he's got no idea what she's going on about and they can act as if it never happened. She's glad that he doesn't, though.]

I still can't think of you as a monster, but if that is how you see yourself... then what is unhealthy about caring for someone that shares something with you, even if it is something negative?

It's how everyone I know sees me. Except for you. I don't entirely mind. I wouldn't call myself a human ever anyway.

[He pauses. He doesn't really know if he wants to get into this. Not after the things he's been through recently. It's starting to wear on him though and even though he likes to play high and mighty over the human race, he's just as likely to collapse as they are.

There's just some layers of madness that prevent that.

But he laughs at her question. He does.]

I don't know if unhealthy is the right word. And it'd be fine if it was the same as it always was. But it's when the chess pieces get moved around that the game changes and becomes something else that it becomes unpleasant...

[But really. He doesn't know how to talk about this so he's just going to turn his back to Zelda somewhat and shrug his shoulders.]

Oh well. It's not that interesting of a topic anyway. Love between monsters and kings.

[He smiles to himself.]

It's a barbaric war! Zelda, and you're a queen among it all, aren't you? I bet you feel really lucky to be the lovely, white queen in this game.

[She shakes her head. Isn't he just saying that everything is changing and that he feels confused? She isn't familiar with the game of chess, but she can understand the feeling of upheaval, the complete loss of control. Maybe he thinks of it as a game to make it just a little less terrifying. As much as she tries to convince herself otherwise, Zelda is a kind person. She presses her lips together, backing down. She has no reason to make Izaya feel that way.]

It is a war, isn't it? Though I'm not quite sure why I would be considered a queen in all of this.

[She shifts her weight, deciding to be blunt.]

I will not force you to keep discussing this if you don't wish to, you know. I don't want to make you uncomfortable. I am admittedly interested if you would like to continue, though.

Everything is a war, didn't you know? The social life of a human in and of itself is a war that they fight until the day that they die. Is anyone ever truly satisfied? Who knows. But that's just a bunch of existentialism bullshit, isn't it.

[He looks over his shoulder at her then.]

It's never just two people in any situation. It's never that simple. You're not the only other piece in my game. Everyone serves a purpose.

Ooooh? Is that right? And why are you interested in my love life, Zelda?

Because you are interesting in general, of course. And it's a rather unique relationship, too. I've never seen anything quite like it.

[She looks off to the side with a small smile. That was part of it, yes. Zelda was naturally curious about everything, but really...]

Those are the reasons you'll believe, at least. It's also because I want to see both of you happy. Whether you would be or not, who is to say?

You want to see us happy?

Aheh. You know. I don't think he'd be very happy with me at all. He's the one who hates me, remember?

[He turns around a bit more entirely to look at Zelda. Well. It's not that hard to talk about it.]

I know that I probably would be. But I don't really bother with thoughts like that. It's a little juvenile of me. And I already went through that in high school.

[She tucks her hair behind her ear. This is a difficult line to tread on - how far can she go before she's betrayed Shizuo's trust? How much is being helpful, and how much is exposing him to someone that he considers an enemy half the time?]

...I do not think he hates you. I don't think he knows what he feels. It seems to be the same as what you feel, though. Confused. Afraid of what that confusion might mean.

[Luckily for Zelda, it doesn't really seem like it's going to be this way. Because Izaya shakes his head at her.]

I know exactly how I feel. And I'm pretty sure that I know exactly how he feels. I've known him for seven years. You've known him for a month at most. I know him better than anyone else. I've observed him constantly. I'm not confused about anything. And if he's confused about something, then I don't know what.

[She wants to tell him how lost Shizuo seemed after that confessions curse, wants to show it to him... but that's definitely going too far.]

Perhaps you're right. I haven't known him for long. But you know, Izaya, I've learned something since coming to Vatheon.

[There's a smile on her face, but it's not a pleasant one. It's almost painful.]

You can't completely understand people just by observing them. You have to open yourself to them, too. It seems counter intuitive, doesn't it? As if one should be able to see more if they don't get involved in everything personally. But it's not that way.

[He has to laugh. It's no more pleasant than Zelda's smile.]

You think I don't know that? Trust me. I do. I try to get close to him in the only ways that I know how to. And if that's through his rage, then fine.

And what about you, Zelda? You seem like the preoccupied type. You're a Princess of where you come from but you're still focused on the ways of your world that you seem to forget you're not in that world anymore. What about your happiness? And your love? Isn't that something worth consideration?

Even if it were, the person that I love is not here. My happiness lies back in my world.

[She closes her eyes, tilting her head back.]

That isn't the case for everyone, though. For some people, their happiness lies here. The constraints of their world are removed in this place, and they can pursue it.

That's too bad. It seems like someone loves you here in this world. Oh well. I guess hearts get broken all of the time though, huh? Unrequited love and all of that.

That's right, isn't it? Vatheon is open to possibilities. Very unique place it is. But that doesn't necessarily make it easier.

[He becomes quiet and walks over to Zelda a bit more directly, invading her personal space. He looks down at her and reaches a hand up to put his finger to the center of her forehead.]

You really are a princess.

[He smiles and leans forward and removes his finger to instead press his mouth against her forehead in a simple, platonic kiss.]

I don't like to talk about him like this. It reminds me of things. And it's easier to just hate him back. I'm sure you understand, nn?

[She blinks exaggeratedly a couple times, surprised by the gesture. It's not long before she offers him a soft smile.]

I do. It's a difficult thing.

[Her hand reaches out to touch the plaque. Reluctant love. Who wouldn't be reluctant? It hurts...]

[He watches her. Zelda truly is an interesting woman. He's met plenty of women and none of them were ever quite so unique and effortlessly strong in ways they didn't even know. Even Celty who was the oldest creature he'd ever met didn't have such an air about her.

Maybe that's why he decided to talk to Zelda about it tonight. That and maybe he was just breaking a little more than he cared to admit.

After all, appearances mean everything.]

[It's for everything, really. And never saying his name directly. It made it easier, that's for sure.]

I think I'm going to go to the gardens, nn? Roses are a favorite flower of mine. Especially the red ones.

[The princess felt much the same about Izaya. He had an easy air of intelligence about him, and she didn't need to dumb herself down at all. She had been wary of him at first, but she's come to recognize his own brand of kindness and considers him a person to be respected in many ways. She smiles again when he thanks her, inclining her head.]

Anytime. You should enjoy the garden while it is here, it's lovely.

[She raises her hand in a small wave, wondering if Shizuo ever did leave the gardens or not.]
