[ Good evening, Ladies and Gentlemen of Vatheon— whatever your newfound stature may be, Prince, Princess, Knight, or Peasant, you will all receive a message on your SFC on the eve of Saturday regardless:

You are cordially invited to the castle for this evening's ball. In addition, you are all welcome to try and solve the riddle if it fancies you. It just may break the curse!

The invitation is unsigned, but its intentions are clear. Maybe you hadn't quite noticed the sizeable castle in the distance of the city that had sprung up, but this message would surely garner your attention toward it now.

Should you arrive at the castle, plenty of attractions await you:

Ballroom ❧ A very large and beautiful ballroom is lighted up, complete with a playing violin orchestra. While the curtains will be drawn during this event, there is a windowed view and exit on one side of the ballroom that leads to:

Smee's Rose Garden ❧ A broad and colorful spanse of a garden, complete with many paths and turns. Plenty of roses are arranged in great arches, which provide perfect little places should you need some privacy with your sweetheart. Anyone familiar will even tell you that the garden was purposefully designed for just that sort of thing.

The Riddle ❧ There is an inscription located on a noticeable plaque set in one of the garden's benches. It reads:

Two are necessary to break this curse
Riled up, upset, what kind of love?
Only this kiss will stop it from getting worse.
Look for a winged one is push comes to shove,
Look for a glance slightly dark,
Search for a pair in reluctant love.
One answers a call; that's your mark;
One longs for patria though adverse.

Dining Hall ❧ Connected to the ballroom is an extremely long hall that stretches as far as the eye can see, elegantly arranged as the dining area. Expensive and exquisite cuisine seem to be on the menu— try something new? Chances are you won't be eating from a selection such as this again anytime soon!

Dais ❧ There is a noticeable raised dais that is easily visible via any area within the ballroom. It's locked off from guests, though— what is it for...?

[Karkat was treading through minefields at this rate with Yuno. This was a very sensitive topic with her, and if anything it raised her suspicions on whether her lost time of stalking Eridan had meant he had slipped out her secret. How much did Karkat know?]

He knows enough. You don't have to worry about that. Also, he has a name. It's Yukki.

[Yuno had gotten much more somber compared to her cheeriness she had not even a moment ago. She really didn't like him calling Yukki 'he' the way he had, it made it sound like Yukki didn't matter. He mattered more than anything else, though, Karkat just didn't know.]

[Don't think he misses that change of tone. Right on the mark. He wasn't wrong to remember what she said during that curse; however little he heard, it was enough. This, now, is just further proof of what a mask that cheery exterior is. His wings flick behind him, scattering a light dusting of sparkly fairy dust.]

[So maybe the fairy tale backdrop is not the best for tense atmospheres.]

Yukki, whatever. But it's pretty strange of you to be so cagey about your own earth boyfriend after you've been so nosy about Eridan. You called it common courtesy, didn't you? And here you are snubbing what I'm offering like it were something dead and rotting.

[Asking how much of your murderous ways your boyfriend knows about you isn't the same as asking how your matesprit is doing with the curse. He had now walked into a topic that was much harder to walk out of, and even if he could, Yuno would not forget this. Especially since he seemed to get more suspicious on how much he really knew about her as he talked. Cagey, dead and rotten...he was almost too obvious, actually.]

It's not really the same when you're asking questions that aren't even similar to what I asked, though. I had just asked about how he was, since I could see how the curse was treating you.

[Wow rude! Either way Yukiteru didn't exactly have shitty taste when it came to Yuno, since she was sort of a forced girlfriend. If they even were still dating right now. She wasn't even going to make a comment on that though.]

He's eating like anyone normal does.
But you don't have to try to worry about him, Yukki's perfectly fine now that I can protect him again.

[Karkat should probably learn some protecting skills while he's at it, because a certain naga might be in danger after all. Soon.]

Funny, usually it's people who need saving from the howlerbeast. But who am I to go questioning the safety of some guy with his crazy girlfriend? It's not like seeing feelings turn sour enough to kill people gives me any reason to worry.

[His arms fold over his chest; for all he's playing sarcastic, he is quite wary of her.]

But you know what. You keep your distance. You watch over your dumbshit earth boyfriend and see if he doesn't figure you out.

[Yuno's eyes had darkened over a bit by now. She was about done with this troll, the more he talked about Yukki the more she just wanted him gone. He'd all but confirmed enough with her now, he and Eridan were threats to her safety she had with her relationship with Yukki, and she was not going to let them jeopardize that. But there's no point hiding that anymore, was there? Not that Yuno would do anything right now during a ball when she wanted to have fun with Yukki, no...but Room 6 should be expecting a visitor at this rate.]

Yukki is safe.
He has nothing to worry about, nothing is going to hurt him with me around. Even if...even if he doesn't actually remember being my boyfriend. He is, and that's all that matters.

So what does it matter if there have to be casualties if anyone tries to ruin his happiness or hurt him?
But yes, keeping a distance is a good idea. Stay away from Yukki.

[Meanwhile, Eridan made his way through this stupid ball, this was stupid, he didn't want to be here, and yet, AND fucking YET, here he is. It's all Karkat's fault, he would have stayed home and just ignored the stupid thing, it was a human get together anyways and BOY did he have this weird hate for humans, he didn't generally like them, but something really was tugging on his hate strings about them as of late.]

[So he slithers his way on over, pausing a moment seeing a pink werewolf chatting with Karkat--which was weird, but then again, he had seen a couple werewolves by now, so maybe not that odd--but that pink... It had to be Yuno, he definitely recalls seeing something on the network with her, but why was she talking to Karkat? Either which way, he approaches, shifting a gaze between the two, first to Yuno.]

Hey Yu, did Kar rope you into comin' here?

[For all he doesn't really know Yuno all too well, she hasn't really done anything that really calls for any animosity, plus she's not a human right now, and that's a good enough reason to be friendly as any. But then he shifts his gaze to Karkat.]

An' I'm here, don't think I'm gonna be wearin' a dress either, I look fine the way I am, I don't need your shitty fairy fashion sense for this stupid thing.

[GOOD THING HE ISN'T INTERRUPTING ANYTHING RIGHT?]

[Karkat hardly looks the most relaxed, either. He may be a fairy godmother this week, but his base is still troll, and the instincts and cultural cues drilled into him by living on a planet like Alternia have not gone anywhere. And for all violence is no longer the first solution - he's grown almost peaceful in a way - he knows better than to let himself look weak in front of a threat.]

[Before he can actually make much of a retort, though, he hears the slither of a long snake body. His gaze shifts sideways, and--yes, it's Eridan, like he thought it might be. His posture eases and he edges back, settling, or appearing to.]

Not even close. She's the one who came bothering me. Hopeless case so I'm not even going to try with her. And I'm not putting you in a dress, either. You don't even want to go to the ball, do you? There's no point in it.

[He turns to Yuno again.]

How about you go see to your earth boyfriend. I think we're done here.

[Yuno's expression had changed completely, as if her altercation with Karkat mere seconds ago never even happened, or was simply a joke.]

Yeah, I came here with Yukki actually! He was sort of hesitant coming out here, but I'm sure he's having fun wherever he is!

[Turning back to Karkat, her smile lessened a bit. But only as she addressed him.]

I was actually about to leave, since Yukki is probably wondering where I am.
Well, I'll see you both later!

[She gave them a slight wave, and with that Yuno turned away and headed back towards the direction she'd last seen Yukiteru at. They knew...she'd have to deal with this another time. Not tonight, though, she'd let them at least have one last good moment together.]

[Eridan isn't stupid, he definitely picks up the shift in both of them. For all he was playing innocent on the air between them as he approached, he knew something was up.]

Alright, well sssee ya then. I guesss hawe fun or whatewer.

[He offers a casual, half-hearted wave in Yuno's direction as she leaves, waiting till she's out of ear shot, he looks to Karkat, curious look and all.]

What wasss that about?

[No surprise at all when he sees Yuno's expression change so immediately. He certainly hopes the 'see you later' is just a pleasantry, though. After that? He's definitely not looking forward to any future interactions. There's no wave from him, just a snort, which he can get away with, given his usual manner.]

[He similarly waits until she's gone to say anything.]

She's crazy as Vriska and I called her on it, that's what.

Oh. She's alwaysss ssseemed kinda normal to me--barrin' a few thingsss she'sss sssaid, but I jussst kinda shrugged it off, but what makesss you think she'sss asss bad asss Wrisss, cosss' that'sss quite the comparissson.

[He glances back to where Yuno had gone, but she's obviously out of sight by now. After a moment he just resumes looking to Karkat.]

[He turns to Eridan more fully now. He's not relaxed, not entirely, showing in tension lingering about his shoulders and crossed arms.]

She said a few casualties were worth it to protect her moron of an earth boyfriend, which is one-sided because he doesn't even remember having the relationship with her, and who, in the first place, she was ready to stab someone over for the sake of approval. So maybe not quite as crazy as Vriska, but she's no normal human.

... I'd kill sssomeone if it meant protectin' you, for the record.

[He just is gonna slip that in, yep.]

But, that approwal thing is a tad extreme, but not nearly asss bad asss shit Wrisss' done, I'd know, I dated her. Maybe she'sss just ower protectiwe or sssomethin', who knowsss. Either which way, I doubt she'sss anythin' we need to honessstly consssern ourssselwesss with. Not like either of usss are aimin' to bother her little not-boyfriend.

[Eridan's definitely slithering closer, circling around him a bit, maybe coiling his tail around him, before stopping right in front of him. Putting his hands on his shoulders, rubbing at them lightly with his thumbs.]

Ssso relax, ssstop bein' ssso damn tenssse.

[Karkat grumbles mildly, finally dropping to the ground as Eridan circles. He's got magic and his matesprit has those fangs. Things are fine. They're safe here. He allows the hands on his shoulders, the rubbing of his thumbs easing away soreness.]

I'm not looking for you to kill anyone for me, not unless it is absolutely necessary.

[He probably doesn't need to speak for himself, though. Not after Stein.]

But I still don't trust her. She's human, not troll, and there is something off. I'll put it this way: would you rather I trust the wrong person and let it come bite me in the ass, or stay cautious where I think it's due and stay safe as a result?

I wouldn't kill anyone UNLESSS it wasss nesssesssary, an' you know it, but that doesssn't change the fact I would. I wouldn't blame a human for feelin' that way, but I don't disssagree that sssomethin' itsssn't exactly right with her either.

[He knows well enough that Karkat would kill for him if he needed to, after what happened with Stein and everything before... Yeah.]

You can stay cautious, there's nothin' wrong with that, just don't lose ewen MORE sleep ower this shit. No point in worryin' too fuckin' much, you fusss about shit enough asss isss.

Eridan, I hardly even sleep as it is. There's not "more" to lose when there's barely even any to begin with. And don't fuss over that; you know I make it fine with the coral supporting me. Besides, it makes perfect sense for me to do. I'm the leader and I need to stay vigilant, even in a place like this. Especially here, even, because the threats are less consistent: you don't always know when or where they're going to strike.

[He just sighs.]

Yeah, I know how you handle thisss shit NORMALLY, but ssstill, I don't want the few timesss I actually sssucsssesssfully get you to sssleep with me ruined ower thisss human who isssn't quite right in the sssponge. We can ssstay on guard, but I doubt she'll do anythin' tonight if she'sss ewen gonna do ANYTHIN' at all. She'sss probably full a shit anywaysss. Tryin' to talk big, who knowsss.

Don't expect me to sleep at all soon, Eridan. Not after that, not with this curse, not until things feel fine again. Which they probably won't, because you can't tell me you haven't noticed she took up the place next to us if you're calling her Yu of all things. She didn't act like she was talking shit, either. I'm not stupid. Even if she was, everything I've learned tells me to take shit seriously. March fucking fourteenth happened when I didn't, and I know you weren't here for that, but it is a hard lesson and hard backup and I am not going to forget just because it means I could get lazy and relax.
