◣ Summer Fair ◢

If anyone actually wanders up there, they will find the whole village decorated with strings of light, fish shaped lanterns, streamers, and kelp. Just past the North edge of the Village was a fair.

There was a large stage in the center of the fair, rides, a fortune teller, contests, games, a petting zoo, a fish exhibit, stalls, booths and everything else you can find at a fair.

[ It might not have been a proper matsuri, but it was probably the closest that Bon was going to get to having one. When the announcement was made, he had gone out to find himself a nice, simple yukata to wear for the occasion, particularly for the last night of it.

He held the lantern in his hand, the same shade of blue that belonged to the flames that had risen on the Blue Night, the same shade of blue that belonged to an extension of friendship. He stared down into it for a moment before he turned and headed down toward the beach, following the line of lights to find his way in the dark. ]

Hey! Heeeey, Ryuuji, wait up!

[Being ambiguously radioactive makes you able to produce your own light to see your way anyway, being part dog makes you follow after your friends with the urgency of them going away forever even though they're not.

(That's silly you silly dog.)

Not that anybody would be able to quite tell from the light within, but the lantern Jade picked out was white. She remembered something about releasing lanterns in memory of those that passed on and, well, "white" was a color she associated with her grandpa in addition to Bec.]

Anybody ever tell you that you walk too fast?

Maybe you walk too slow.

[ But he slows his steps anyway, from a "purposeful stride" to a more "leisurely amble". He shifts his lantern to the side so he can look down at hers with a faint smile illuminated by the glow of the lanterns before he looks away again. Better to look down and make sure he doesn't trip anything; the last thing he needs is to break a geta. ]

How'd you find me in the crowd, anyway?

Uh, duh? Part dog? I know I wear glasses, but I have better eyesight than you think!

[That doesn't make sense except for the part of dogs seeing in dimmer light better than humans.

ANYWAAAAY--]

You told me about this, right? The releasing lanterns thing? Wanna do it together?

[Yes Jade because Bon clearly has room in his schedule for a yappy dog.]

Right.

[ Okay Jade sure.

He nods even as he finally steps out onto the sand, heading toward the water. ]

Sure. It's usually better with others. Best not to dwell on the sort of things your lantern can represent to you by yourself.

[ He pauses a moment, eyeing the boats along the shore, before motioning with his head. ]

Wanna take a boat out?

[Look Bon it's easier to say that than "YOU'RE A FUCKING GIANT"]

Sure. [She can fly, but whatever floats his boat.

She can also teleport, which she does into the boat closest to them. She sits there just staring at him expectantly.]

You coming, dude?

I'm fast, but I can't compete with teleporting.

[ Show off.

He takes his geta off and puts them into the boat and tucks his sleeves back before he leans down to start pushing the boat into the water. Once it's free of the sand he climbs in, grabs a hold of the oars, and starts paddling them out further from the shore. ]

So why white? If you don't mind my asking.

[Don't be mad, bro.]

Er, well...

[Jade tugs one of her ears up, down and side to side, apparently these methods would make him see it better.]

Bec was white, and my grandpa wore white pretty much every day of his life. If I am going to use a lantern in remembrance of anyone, it should be them. [She looks down at the lantern, then out to the water.] Grandpa took me out on his boat sometimes as well. He was an excellent sailor.

[...That thing is happening again, the part where if she doesn't stop she's going to ramble off pointless details about her life. Better stop.]

Is it okay if I ask you about yours? Blue is one of my favorite colors, so...I can't help but be curious.

[ Once it feels like they're far enough away--but not so far that the boat will capsize for going too far from the island--Bon stops rowing and pulls the oars out of the water, letting them rest inside the boat again. He picks up his lantern and looks at it, quiet for a moment. ]

Sixteen years ago, on what we now refer to as the Blue Night, Satan... killed many of the holy men of the world. One of the temples that was hit was my own. My grandfather died that night, along with many of the monks. My father survived, though people became afraid. We lost a lot of followers...

[ He lets out a faint breath and shakes his head. ]

The blue is for the color of Satan's flame. I'm remembering those who've passed, but also... honoring the friendship with Rin. Old wounds are being healed.

That's...

[Sweet? No, that would be an inappropriate thing to say. She reaches out and touches his wrist for a moment, but immediately pulls her hand away.]

You are a kind person, Ryuuji. I cannot think of many people that would work past something as painful as that for the sake of a friend. [Even she still hasn't completely forgiven herself or Tavros for her grandpa's death, and they're friends.]

[ Wow sure is a good thing it's dark out here! ]

It's been... rough. None of us have been the best to him. When we first all found out that he was the son of Satan, it was sort of like... a betrayal. We kind of shunned him a bit. Some things went down when we took a trip back to Kyoto and, well, Rin helped save my family, all of our families. Kind of hard to stay mad at the guy after that.

[ He lifts a hand and rubs the back of his head. ]

But that's the past now, yeah? And that's what releasing these lanterns is going to help with: letting go.

...Yeah! We should not hold onto things that hurt us, we should just let them go.

[Well yes, Jade, that is the point of this exercise. But her actual point comes when she actually does reach out and take his hand this time.]

And I feel privileged that I am able to do this with someone close to me.

[ Oh.

Bon hesitates for a moment, but he eventually curls his hand around hers in turn. It's warm against his palm and he takes in a deep breath as he lifts his lantern a little. ]

Together, then?

[She lifts hers up, nodding in response.]

Yep!

[Together as friends, Jade, don't freak out.]

[ Bon might tighten his hold on Jade's hand, just a little bit, before he finally lifts his lantern upward. It takes just a little upward nudge from his own hand to send it sailing up into the air. ]

[Jade's still a cheater, she doesn't need to actually push her lamp to send it flying and instead pushes it up with space magic. Watching it float away, she sighs and leans on him.

Jade. Jade. You're doing that thing again where it's weird and date-like. Stop.]

[ That's okay. Bon... doesn't actually mind.

He watches the lanterns float away for a moment, almost intensely concentrated on them, before he finally starts to see the others joining them in the air. He nudges Jade just a little, pointing with his free hand. ]

Look.

[She looks up to where he's pointing, eyes widening in astonishment and lights of the lanterns reflecting in the lens of her glasses.]

Ohhh, my gosh.

[It's definitely nothing Jade's ever seen before. Entirely different from stars in the sky or the glow of phosphorous flora and fauna. The fact that she's witnessing this with someone else rather than alone might be adding to the wonder of it all, it's best not to dwell on that.]

...Thank you for taking me out here, Ryuuji.

[Definitely better than if she just flew out here solo to release a lantern.]

[ Bon glances down at her for a moment before promptly looking away again. There was an unsettled feeling in his stomach that he wasn't too sure about, but he had a feeling he knew the cause. There was some hesitation stirring within him, and a sudden rigidness to his posture, as he sucked in a breath. ]

I need to share something with you.

Yeah?

[That's never a good thing. Even if she wasn't part dog, she'd still be able to detect the tenseness from her companion. Nervousness? She'll just let go of him so he can have some space.]

Well, you know you can tell me anything.

[ oh god okay alright okay you've got this ryuuji you have got.

He wipes his hands on his pants, trying to get rid of the sweat that's suddenly there with the onslaught of nerves, and he takes a breath as he stares very pointedly into the dark water. ]

So I've been here... what, just a few months shy of a year now. Not many of my own friends have come and gone; in fact, most who have arrived have become more or less permanent residents themselves, or as permanent as this place allows any of us to be.

And actually none of that is important and has little to do with what I actually want to say. Something like this isn't really my strong point. I've never actually been interested before.

I. Um.

[ DEEPEST BREATH EVER ]

I... like you, Jade. A lot. You're fun and interesting and... pretty and the time I spend with you is always a highlight and I just wanted to get that out there.

[ WHY DID YOU HAVE TO DO THIS ON A BOAT YOU CAN'T RUN AWAY FROM THIS ]

[Jade was already questioning what he was getting at before he acknowledged it himself, but then--]

[…Back up, like? Like a lot??

He thinks she's pretty?]

[She should give herself another moment to process this news, accept it, tell him why that's a bad idea in the first place. Instead what comes out is completely impulsive and selfish.]

I like you, too!

[Oh shit.]

Um. Also a lot. Shit--I know I'm part dog and dogs like basically everybody but I know that I like you in a different way?? I want to see you and be around you all the time but at the same time looking at or thinking about you makes me kinda explode inside and I don't know what that is all about, but it's confusing!

[She can just teleport away but her powers are limited by distance thanks to the coral and she would have to teleport back to the island, but maybe she can make a sprint back to the elevator…

NO, THIS IS STUPID!]

[ Oh thank everything that he isn't sitting here looking like a giant dejected ass. Because Bon was pretty sure that's exactly what was going to happen. But it didn't. And that's good.

Wait hold on they're in agreement here over this right. Like. This is a mutual attraction kind of thing? Isn't that what's happening here?

Bon clears his throat and brings a hand up to place it against the back of Jade's head and pull her in toward him, putting her face near his collar bone.

Seemed like the thing to do. ]

Well that's... good. Right?
