Overflow for Masq. Ball

All day the Golden Victory club had been closed, the only people allowed in being the workers and helpers who were setting it up for the night's big event. Finally, at seven, the lights all turn on and the main doors open.

Leading up to the main doors is a red carpet walkway that will lead right into the main room. There, the usual club room is well illuminated with it's large bar at the back wall with plenty of drinks available for everyone. Along the walls, the club's chairs and some new loveseats are placed for anyone who would rather sit and socialize than stand or dance.

At the back, on either side of the large room, there are food tables with a wide selection, certain to please everyone. Along with these food tables are separate dessert tables. On their own table, there are three, large, cakes that anyone is welcome to dig into. (Although, they're just so pretty!)

In a few, strategic, locations there can be found baskets of masks just in case anyone needs one or wants to try and get one on a stubborn friend.

Lighthearted ball music and slow, peaceful songs lend to the atmosphere; loud enough to be heard and danced to, but soft enough that conversation is possible.

The hosts themselves, along with the staff of Temptationis Clementiae, are already there and in costume, as if welcoming their guests in for the festivities.

On Alternia, we use something called a sylladex. It keeps all our things hidden away on our person- an invisible backpack of sorts.

[The bow disappears again, only this time, near Darkleer's head, a small kind of card appears. The bow is visible inside of it, and the words beneath it are written in clean print: Archermedes, Bowkind]

There are two parts to a sylladex. The captchalogue deck keeps most items inside of it, but the strife deck is where weapons are stored.

[He listens to Darkleer's explanation, standing on his toes so he can better read the card. This brings about a whole new round of questions in Fai's head. The boy really does enjoy learning about troll culture and technology.]

That's really neat. Does everyone from Alternia have a sylladex?

Yes. We are all given them when we are very young. After that, it is ours to learn to use and customize, if we like.

[His card for Archermedes is dismissed, and a different card appears, another color than it. There's a picture for a moment before the card turns completely black with a math equation in white going across it.]

We do that with fetch modi. They decide how our sylladex is managed. If I want to retrieve something from my deck, I have to solve a math problem of sorts. that's how my fetch modus works.

[It's rather nice explaining patiently like this. It feels different than the talks he's had before with people in this bubble.]

What's the difference between one that's customized and one that isn't?

[Fai peers at this new card and wonders if he can figure out the answer to the problem displayed on it.]

What happens if you can't solve the math problem?

[He would be quite happy to know that he's not the only one finding this conversation a pleasant one. Then again, he figures that if the troll didn't they'd have moved onto some other topic by now.]

Well, the default modus you have is called a 'stack' modus. You can only pull out the item that was put into your sylladex most recently. You can also use an Array modus, which will allow you to pull out anything at anytime you like, without fuss. I have that as a back-up modus if I feel the situation is too important for shenanigans.

[It's a rather complicated one! Darkleer likes to challenge himself, after all, and his main hobbies do include robotics...]

I get a few tries to get the answer correct. If I don't, after a few tries, my modus locks me out from getting that particular item. All the more reason to get it right, hm?

So you can just change the modus any time you want to?

[It's a struggle to keep up with all these new words and concepts but you won't see him complaining. That math problem however is just downright intimidating- another reminder that Darkleer has to be really smart. Fai smiles a little wider, his tone like a giggle when he responds.]

That is a pretty good reason.

Only if you have other types of modi installed. Some individuals can create them, but most just buy whatever type of modus they would like to have.

[Darn. That tone might pull something at his bloodpusher. It's not often he makes people laugh, even Gamzee and Equius.]

Very much so. Having a bit of difficulty solving it?

[~~Mission accomplished.~~ It's one of the first times he's felt like laughing since he arrived in Vatheon. In some ways it's easier for him to be more frank around Darkleer than his twin. Perhaps Fai was less afraid of bringing up something the troll didn't want to talk about. Or because if he did, the boy wouldn't be able to read his emotions as easily as he could Yuui's.]

It's definitely harder than anything I've seen before. Could you answer most of the questions when you first started using it?

At first, yes. But then it would start to slowly give out harder and harder problems for me to solve. I had to study hard and stay on my toes so that it would not get the best of me, but I wasn't always successful.

So it's a way to make sure you keep studying. That's pretty clever!

It is why I decided to use it. I've quite a few seem to prefer simple puzzles when it comes to their fetch modi. I actually had to make one for someone here which followed a simple format like that.

Wait, did you make a modus or a whole sylladex?

[This is an important question- if he can make a sylladex Fai will most certainly be asking for one later. It seems a very handy thing to have, especially once he starts raiding the library.]

Both.

[It's hard to miss that interest.]

Would you like one, then?

[His future request having been figured out so easily, he looks a bit sheepish. Still, he nods.]

It would hardly be any trouble at all. They're challenges, and I like that. What sort of modus would you like to have?

I don't know. Maybe you should make it a surprise?

[Because he figures Darkleer can come up with way better ideas than he can.]

Very well, then. A surprise. When it's done, and if there are no interruptions, I'll be sure to call you on the SFC. Have you been able to handle it better since we first met?

Yes, I understand how to use it a lot better now.

[He nods again, smiling up at the troll. Slowly Fai is growing more accustomed to all these acts of generosity from others, namely Darkleer and Johnny. If anything his appreciation for each of them is greater for how uncommon they used to be to him. And now he's got a sylladex to look forward to playing with.]

That's good to hear. It's really a rather simple design, but I understand that different worlds have come along differently in regards to technology. It's rather interesting to observe, really.

[A small shrug at the thank you and he runs a hand through his hair.]

I think it's interesting too. My world relied more on magic than technology. Things were very different there than they are here, but that just gives me more to learn about.

[It will never be nothing to the boy. Still, he'll leave it be for your sake.]

I have actually heard a lot about magic, but I am afraid my experience with it is near to nonexistent. Did you deal much with it?

[He shakes his head, suddenly becoming rather downcast. Everybody in his world was far too afraid of what he could do with any information regarding magic to give him even a scrap.]

You'd have to ask Yuui. I wasn't allowed to study it, but he might have after we were split up.

...I see. Perhaps I will bring it up, then.

[The current topic seems to be a bit depressing for him.]

I actually ran into your brother not too long ago one night.

[You have no idea. But it's something he'll have to come to terms with eventually. You should know how that goes.]

You did? Did you like him?

[Well, misery loves company.]

I did. He seemed to be having something of a night, however. I could tell he likes that you were speaking with others, however.
