He was killing himself. He could feel it in the intense pain that exploded across his think pan like someone was jabbing two culling forks through his eye sockets and then wiggling them around inside his brain.

He was sure he had killed himself. He sort of hoped he had killed himself, because living with that kind of damage was going to suck serious hoofbeast testicles.

And then he'd expected to hopefully find himself safe and sound in the bubbles, where he could spend eternity reliving the few good moments he'd had in his short life and leave the universe-saving and misery to someone else. What he hadn't expected was a whole lot of water, and confusion and a lot of voices, none of which were familiar. It sounded like he'd suddenly landed himself in the middle of a city.

Frightened and confused, he pushed himself up, coughing up a lungful of sea water and yellow blood, and felt around helplessly, searching for something, anything familiar. "Hello?" he called out, but not too loud. Karkat, Kanaya, Terezi and Gamzee had been right there. Why wasn't anyone saying anything to him?

"What happened?"

Signless has no problem letting the young troll--Sollux, he knows that's his name, that's who he must be--cling to him, and he tucks the cloak closer around his shoulders.

"You can call me Signless, and I'm a friend. I'm going to help you, Sollux, everything will be okay."

God, what happened to this poor kid? Signless stays kneeling beside him, unsure if he's well enough to be moved.

"Wow, that's reassuring." His tone is sarcastic. "If you say you're my friend, it must be true." But he doesn't pull away. He's confused and blind, and Signless is being friendly, at least.

"Where am I? I...wasn't expecting any strangers."

So prickly and crabby. So much like younger Psii. Sollux can't see it, but Signless smiles at that pissiness.

"You're in a place called Vatheon. It's complicated, but you're not dead, and many of your friends are here. They've missed you a great deal, and I'm sure they'll be delighted you're here."

He falls silent for a bit, frowning in confusion. "I'm still not dead? Fuck."

"No, not dead."

Signless considers.

"Although you might be soon if we don't get you to a doctor. Do you think you can walk?"

"My head hurts," Sollux murmurs. "But I think I can walk, yeah, if I have something to lean on. You aren't going to take a bite out of me, are you?"

"I would never hurt you, Sollux." Signless tries to gently and carefully get the lanky, bleeding troll up on his feet, manuevering one of Sollux's arms so it's over his shoulders.

"Nothing personal," Sollux says, his lips quirking wryly. "One of my friends helped me up like this, then bit me on the neck. It was okay."

He leans heavily on Signless with a groan. "You're an adult troll, right?" There's a tiny thread of nervousness running through his voice.

Signless bears up under Sollux's weight. "Don't exert yourself. It's okay, I'm strong enough to take it."

He smiles, a little sadly, at the question. "Yes, I'm an adult troll. However, rumors of us eating or culling younger trolls have been greatly exaggerated."

Pause.

"You're friends with Karkat, right?"

He chews on that quietly for a few steps, then nods. "Yeah, I am." His tone is a bit challenging.

He's still unsure whether this Signless is on their side or not, or who he is. It's weird and sort of creepy how nice this adult is being, and he's waiting for the other shoe to drop.

"Karkat is a very dear friend of mine, too." Signless keeps moving; he wants to get Sollux to the clinic as quickly as he can. Losing that much blood can't be good.

"Really?" Sollux nearly stops dead, shocked. "You've met kk?"

"I have. He's here, in this place. If you like, I can call him for you, once we're at the clinic."

"And you like him?" Sollux sounds completely incredulous.

"We're very close, yes." Signless finds this reaction pretty amusing.

Sollux snickers faintly, leaning a little more on Signless. "Wow, I'm in a mirror world or something. Adults being nice, and KK has real friends."

It's probably a good thing Sollux can't see Signless right now, or he'd be even more thrown.

"We're at the clinic now. There's three stairs right in front of you. We'll take them slow and easy."

He'll figure it out eventually.

He nods and slowly takes the stairs, feeling his way out and clinging to Signless. "I thought all of the trolls were dead except us."

Perhaps sooner rather than later.

"We're all taken from different points in history. The younger trolls call it timeline shenanigans. I'm from what would be the past to you."

Signless bypasses the nurses in the waiting room and heads right for one of the exam rooms, finding a cot and leading Sollux towards it.

"You're doing so well, just a little further. Okay, there's a cot right in front of you. I'm going to help you lay down on it, all right?"

"Oh," Sollux says, his head turning from side to side nervously as he tries to identify the unfamiliar sounds of this place. "How many of my friends are here?"

Signless tries to gently assist the younger troll in laying down; he knows that he'll feel better, at least, once Sollux is off his feet.

"Quite a few, actually. Karkat, Nepeta, Gamzee, Aradia, Feferi, Eridan, Kanaya... Tavros and Equius. I believe that's all of them." He's left out Vriska, but only because he hasn't met her yet.

Sollux' jaw drops, though he lets Signless manoeuvre him and lies down obediently. "They're all alive? Uh, I guess from different points in time?"

He does feel better lying down on this weird soft rectangle, but he's still nervous. He feels around, feeling the rail beside him, and trying to understand what sort of place this is.

"Yes. Everyone is from a different time point, it seems, although some of them line up fairly closely."

Signless pulls over the doctor's stool and takes a seat, staying near enough that Sollux can reach out and touch him if he cares to. "We're in a medical center right now. The nurses will come and look at you soon, I believe."

He nods and when he touches Signless, he leaves his hand there, curling his fingers around his bicep lightly. He feels stupid, like a grub clinging to his lusus - and doing that was never a safe thing to do with his lusus - but he just needs to know where Signless is.

"I don't know if there's anything anyone can do, anyway. I just strained my thinking sponge."

Signless holds his arm still, having absolutely no problem with Sollux wanting to hold onto him, and gently pats the top of the young troll's hand.

"You lost a lot of blood. You probably need a transfusion."

And what a coincidence, he knows someone with the exact same blood!
