[ Twilight fades into the darkness of evening, and a whole gaggle of trolls are up on the island to camp out for one very big reason.

One big, angry, honking reason.

But general terror of the Grand Highblood aside, they're still fairly functional in-so-much as trolls ever are. And that's where the shenanigans come in. ]

Guard duty. Making sure nothing gets into the camp.

Sounds like fun! Can I walk with you for a while?

If you like. Stay off to the side and slightly behind me, though; that way, if anything jumps out at us, I can defend you.

But what if it comes from behind? It's okay, I can take care of myself! And it's hard to talk to you if I'm standing behind you.

[Dangit, that's kind of the point!]

If you insist, then. Just be careful.

[ That's a rhetorical question. Don't answer it. ]

It's really boring up here, huh?

[He's not touching that with a ten foot pole.]

I suppose. I've been keeping myself busy with guard duty.

Oh. Well, do you think you can spare time for a swim later?

[ Look. Look at her face. ]

But... that's something we did when we were moirails...

So? We can do it as friends still, it's not an exclusively-moirails thing.

I... I guess?

It'll be fun, I promise!

[His doubts, Feferi... HE HAS THEM. But he's going to keep quiet and not express them, just walking the trail he's made in the woods, keeping his eyes open for any threats.]

[ SIGH. You act like she can't tell that you're being strangely quiet. ]

Is it going to be awkward every single time I try to be your friend again? You know this isn't fair to me, or to Nepeta, right?

It's not exactly fair to me either!

[Whoops, that came out snappier than he intended.]

It's easy for you, you just want to be friends, you don't have to remember what it was like before.

[ ~~Excuse her while she goes and makes a passive-aggressive (unsure) face plurk~~ ]

If you don't want to be my friend, that's okay. And if you're more pale for me than her, that's okay too! But lying about it, to us and to yourself isn't going to fix anything.

I'm not more pale for you than I am for her!

[Face-palm.]

You aren't going to let this go, are you?

Fine! You know how you and Eridan are having problems, and how you can't really be friends again after being moirails? That's how I'm feeling right now, Feferi. I know you didn't do it on purpose, but you still left me, and then dumped me again when you came back. We can't just go back to being friends again like some kind of magic!

Eridan? You're comparing this to me and Eridan?? He was a greedy, selfish, self-absorbed little brat who couldn't stand not getting his way! Is that what you are, are you going to try and kill me too?

[ Seems you hit a nerve. She digs her heels into the dirt, and her little fists are balled at her sides, though it's not as if they would be any use against him. ]

You don't even know anything about what's going on between us, so don't even bring him into it! But you know what? At least he was honest with me when I got here, at least he told me where we stood. I had to find out about us from Nepeta almost a month after I got here! But maybe, maybe if you had just told me, there might have been a chance, but no. You told me you couldn't talk to me, and blew me off, but I couldn't dump you if I didn't even know we were together!

I'm not going to try and kill you, but there's definitely one troll here who's being greedy and self-absorbed!

[Equius whirls on her, gritting his teeth and looking every inch the dangerous, volatile highblood. Once, he would have folded and agreed with her on everything, but that was before they had once been moirails.]

What do you want me to do, Feferi? Just pretend it never happened and go back to being all tee hee, life is great, it's a glubbing party, let's all be fronds? I CAN'T DO THAT! I can't just forget, I can't just pretend everything is okay and back to normal, because it isn't! I broke up with Nepeta for you, because I didn't think it was right to be pale for two trolls at the same time! And now she and I have got things worked out, and here you are, saying we should just be pals again! BUT WHAT IF I START BEING PALE FOR YOU AGAIN?! I'm not hurting Nepeta like that again, I'M NOT!

I want you to stop being rude to me and ignoring me because you're scared of may potentially having feelings! Nobody said you can't be pale for two trolls, but if you really that worried about having feelings for me again, you need to seriously think about how you feel about Nepeta right now, because if things were that great between you two, it wouldn't even be a concern!

[ She sighs, and her shoulders sag, her fingers relaxing. ]

Fine, then. I really want to be your friend, but I guess I can't force you. I just wish you'd told me that.
