[ Twilight fades into the darkness of evening, and a whole gaggle of trolls are up on the island to camp out for one very big reason.
One big, angry, honking reason.
But general terror of the Grand Highblood aside, they're still fairly functional in-so-much as trolls ever are. And that's where the shenanigans come in. ]

And then what?

Then he noticed that I was just another kid, his age or a little younger, and he used his psionics to get me out of the bush and to pull most of the thorns out. Lectured me the whole time too, telling me how I shouldn't have wandered so far away from the hivestem, how the highbloods would be mad at me, just all this worrying and fussing. You see, it was a cloudy night, and dim in the clearing, and he'd taken me for a rustblood and was trying to assert some dominance.
Finally, he got all the thorns out, and he took me by the arm and started trying to take me back to the hivestem, complaining the whole time. I pulled away and told him I didn't have, that I was a free troll and lived with another free troll up in the woods, and that we did as we pleased and were slaves to no one. He stopped, and really looked at me for the first time, and I really looked at him... and that's when a cloud slid away from the face of the moon and we saw each other.
He saw that the blood smeared on my arms was bright, mutant red, and I saw his eyes. [quiet laughter] It was probably much scarier for him than for me, because I'd seen those eyes before. I'd dreamed about him, seen him in my visions, and knew that he would be the best and most loyal friend I would ever have. I'd never seen his face, only his eyes, but I knew it was him.
He studied me for a minute, chewing on his lower lips, then he asked "Can I come with you?"
An hour or so later, we tumbled back into the camp, and Lulu took one look at us, filthy and ragged and excited as nut creatures with a fresh cache of nuts, and started fussing immediately, feeding us and then making us both take a bath in a stream nearby. By the time we were done with all that, she'd made a new tunic for Psii, one with his sign on it, all yellow and proud, and he was completely sold. We were together ever after.
[Except when they weren't. But let's not talk about that, the story ends with an arrow in the side and a newly commissioned helmsman.]

That were a real fuckin' nice story.

I'm glad you liked it.
[He pulls himself back to reality and returns to tending the eggs and bacon.]
Eat your breakfast before it gets cold.

[Hey, he has zoned out often enough to eat his breakfast, dinners and snacks cold. But he'll start chomping down again. He's a growing teenage boy after all.]

What about you and Karkat? How did the two of you meet?

He trolled me.

That sounds about right. How did it happen?

[Okay, he was like four sweeps and it was a religious discussion board handling deep questions such as which flavour of faygo is better.]
And like... shit, outta nowhere there was this shouty lil bro, all in this really bitchin' grey just getting his wicked vent on at us about. And all them other clowns all got right salty, but I thought he was kinda fuckin' cool, so we got to speaking on... shit, I can't even get my fuckin' remember on for what we used back then. Weren't trollian. Talked to him again the night after and he always kept talking back to me, so then we became friends.
[Of course, those first two, three
hundred conversations had been just Karkat insulting Gamzee, but Gamzee has known he really had wanted to be friends. Deep down inside. Really deep. Else he wouldn't have kept talking to him, after all!]
He were the first friend I ever made.

[Signless scoots around the fire to sit next to him, putting an arm around his shoulders.]
Psii was the first friend I ever made, too.

[He leans into the hugs happily, before looking a little more serious.]
Hey, like, about what went down when Karkat did all... well, you know. Thank you.

You're welcome, little one.
