See, the funny thing about that is that's the reason God gives for all the stuff he does.

[Clearly he is distrustful of anyone who says they want to 'maintain order'.]

Nothing could be more important, and he has never betrayed our trust in him.

[ Shiro's distrust is actually a little uncomfortable for her, but it's not his fault he doesn't understand. And that's exactly why another pickle is going to fall to Marie's steady, absent-minded revenge. ]

It was his intervention that allows humanity to be able to fight to keep fear and madness at bay.

You guys have to keep madness at bay?

[Hello, things he did not know!]

Is that different there, too? Is it bound in that demon world of yours?

Unless 'madness' is the name of a monster or something, it's not something we have in our world.

[He pauses, and he frowns as he tries to think of a better way to explain it.]

I shouldn't say it doesn't exist, there certainly are people who are insane. But it's not a force that can be fought, nor is it a real threat to mankind. There's nothing that causes madness on a wide scale.

I'm starting to think we should play a game. You'd get points by what you could guess we have in common.

Insanity is... it's a wavelength that is almost a disease. Everyone has some, but there are beings that spread it like a plague just by existing. It's immensely destructive.

[ She makes herself smile just because it seems like too heavy of a subject not to insert a little bit of levity to, but it comes off as awkward. ]

There are more technical explanations, but I think that one is probably the easiest to understand. It's not like you'd be getting tested on it.

How is it not a test if I can get points?

[He says that in a teasing way, but his next response is more serious.]

But really, we don't have anything like that. Demons can be destructive, and some give off something called miasma, but that just causes sickness and death, not insanity.

Demons are experts at chipping away at a human's mental defenses and slowly driving them insane, but that's done through words and actions and preying on a person's insecurities, not by some kind of plague. Also the insanity itself isn't their end goal: if they break down a person's mental capabilities far enough, they'll be able to possess that person. They want human bodies, not human minds. The destruction of the mind is just a means to an end.

Your world is so strange.

[ That was a serious case of pot and kettle, wasn't it? ]

It's unfortunate, but even if the mechanisms are different, it seems like the suffering your enemies can cause are similar. Those are hardly points anyone wants to earn.
