[ So.

This pretty much sucks.

Liz has spent the last few days picking up every last crumb, sweeping up every last dust bunny, and reordering everything like she's possessed. Or maybe like she's a certain child of a certain death god. Who knows. The whole thing is just eerie.

At the moment, she's on her hands and knees in front of the couch in the living room with a pair of scissors. She might be snipping string hanging off the bottom of the couch.

Kid your life is hard. ]

[ Well, cue all sorts of sudden understanding. She's going to start carrying things with her that are perfectly shaped for when he starts having a break down. Something that he can look at and maybe feel better... ]

[ Sincere, if not tinted with a little pity. ]

Don't be silly. I'm well aware that my passion for aesthetics is-- is a problem for everyone.

[And he's spent the last six months here trying to get over it, even if every step forward is often accompanied by a step back.]

[His hand alights on her shoulder anyway, because for all that the reaper is often hands-off as a general rule, there are certain things best conveyed with these little gestures.

[ She appreciates the little gesture, all the same. ]

[ And here's where he just might notice something else a little off about her. Some sort of hesitancy winding its way through her body. ]

...I haven't been completely honest with you since I got here. About status updates from home, I mean.

[He's been distracted, of that there's no doubt; the week has been the start of a few firsts in his life, and the least incredible is his new job (and that's kind of saying something). So it is only now that he notices some kind of distance in his Weapon partner, and it's a challenge to not chalk it up to being separated from her sister.]

I haven't been exactly forthcoming about updates here, either.

[Which sort of makes them even, if in a less than ideal circumstance.]

Yeah.

[ There's a tiny smile, and Liz turns to head back into the living room again to have a seat on the couch. She folds her legs underneath her and sits sideways so that she can face him if he chooses to sit at the other end. ]

So do you have good news or bad news, 'cause mine ain't exactly great. So if yours is good, we might wanna start there. Soften the blow a little bit. Maybe.

[Of course Kid chooses to sit at the opposite end, so that their positions match, if one were to split the couch down the middle, there would be someone occupying the same place on either half.

However, he slings an arm over the back, the way he does when he's relaxed, at ease in his own skin. It couldn't have been that bad news. Liz would have been likely inconsolable if something terrible had happened to Patti, so he doesn't press her immediately for the details. It's likely about some kind of setback. Perhaps the Kishin got away.

Kid is eager to explain himself, in any case.]

I'm not sure how to begin, I suppose I could say that I've started dating.

[HAHAHA YEAH RI--oh god he is totally serious.]

[ Do you hear that sound, Kid? That's the sound of Liz's spirit leaving her body. Woooooooooosh.

If it were anyone else she would automatically assume it was a joke but... but Kid doesn't do that. ]

[Don't do that, Liz; Kid can just go march off and collect your soul anyway, there is no escaping this nightmare.]

Dating.

[And, as if aware this is different and probably weird, he stiffly coughs into the fist he raises to his mouth, averting his eyes.]

To be precise, we haven't gone on any dates yet, but we are seeing each other. Maka didn't mention anything to you?

[BUT ISN'T MAKA DATING SOMEONE ALREADY?]

[ She's gonna try and you can't stop her from trying. ]

[ wait. ]

But. Isn't she seeing that Rin guy? Did they break up?

What? No! No, they're still together.

[And to make everything even more unbelievable. And confusing:]

I'm dating him, too.

[Liz is now free to vacate her body in shock.]

[ We're sorry. The Thompson you are trying to contact right now is unavailable. Please leave a message after the beep. Thank you. ]

[Wow, maybe he should have... tried to break the news a little more gently than that.]

[Liz. Liz, r u ok?]

[Snap out of it! They're having a discussion!]

Huh?! Oh. Uh.

[ Sorry she just. There are so many things about this that aren't right. But... ]

I'm sorry I'm just... y'know. More than a little stunned. But happy for the three of you! As long as you're all happy, I mean.

[ She... guesses? ]

Naturally. We wouldn't have unless such an arrangement made us happy. That's rather the point, isn't it?

[Go on, Liz, tell him like it is.]

I meant to tell you sooner, but the last few days have been busier than expected.

It's just weird, is all. It'll take some getting use to.

[ There's a slight pause as she thinks about how to say this but... well, hell, there's no soft way to say this. ]

I just didn't think... you had it in you? I mean, let's be honest, Kid... you're not really the dating type.

[ Basically you could hit the Lust chapter of that stupid book and never transform at all. ]

[Neither did Kid, really.

There's a lot to that story, and some of it would only inspire more questions, but the kinds that Kid can't answer with confidence because he had only learned of them second-hand. Even third-hand.

So it's after some silence before he attempts to explain.]

Of course not. I am, after all, a grim reaper.

[That he will undoubtedly live to see them play out the last of their days is a fact of which he is keenly aware.]

The fondness I have for them both defies quantitative explanation. I should be worrying about it, not entirely understanding something that effects me greatly, but the knowledge that they feel the same about me results only in a profound sense of calm.

[ ...yeah no she doesn't get it. Because she's still pretty sure he's saying there's no physical attraction on his part. Maybe he just looks at them and smiles a lot.

All of the love, none of the making out.

She can get behind that.

Once that seems to settle in her mind, she actually relaxes a bit and nods. ]

I really am happy for you, Kid. Even if I think Maka needs to spill her secrets.

[ Two boyfriends it's not fair. ]

[Fortunately for Liz, Kid is not the type to kiss and tell.

Try not to break too badly when they're inevitably caught napping in a pile together or kissing. You can have physical intimacy and affection without it being sexual--and it's still romantic.

Mindblowing, huh.

Still, Kid's relieved when Liz seems to ease into the matter.]

Secrets? What secrets?

Well from where I'm sitting I'm counting two boyfriends for Maka, and zero for Liz. This is a ridiculously skewed scoreboard and I need to rectify the situation immediately.

[ she wants to kiss and nap with someone too gosh. ]

Is this a general source of woe, or has someone in particular caught your eye?

[Kid, don't tease her about this, it's not nice and... okay, admittedly, kind of exactly what a guy friend would be doing, ugh.]

[He relents without pestering her any further on the subject; Liz, with this week's curse, has had quite enough stress to weigh on her mind without being teased about a matter that might actually prove to be a sore one.]

Okay. So... we're all on the moon, right? And we're fighting Chrona, who's decided that it's time to swallow the Kishin. Or merge with it. Or whatever.
