One of Vatheon's perks was that it wasn't necessary to work; almost everything was free. As far as Shizuo was concerned, however, that was also one of the drawbacks. He missed working. Of course, his track history for holding down jobs was poor, up until he finally relented and became a body guard, a position where his strength came in handy. But that was exactly what left him feeling off. Too much strength and energy, with no where to vent it. It made him feel restless - even more so after Izaya had denied him a good chase. Shizuo wouldn't have wished an attack on Vatheon under any circumstances, but he could not deny that having a reason to channel that jittery energy would probably help him relax.

Without that prospect, Shizuo tried to focus on other things, like keeping track of the happenings around Vatheon and keeping an eye out just in case anything strange happened. Which is exactly what he was doing, walking in the park - trying to take his mind off of everything. After a while, he paused his walk in favor of leaning against a tree and having a smoke.

[Shizuo nods.]

Makes sense. You've never done it before. I've been doing it so long that it's just normal to me.

Even though you know that it's not healthy for you?

I'm different.

[A pause, which he uses to take another drag, before exhaling and speaking again.]

Things don't...bother me like they do most people. It's hard to hurt me.

[Okay, so he's not certain that it's that way when it comes to cigarettes, but based on the way he tolerates pain and is unaffected by sedatives, it would make sense.]

[The way he puts it, along with the situation, has her letting out a short laugh at what she perceives to be humorous. Strong guy, are you?]

Well, aren't you tough.

[Shizuo shrugs at that, unaffected by her laughter. He'd take that over fear, easily, and he's not keen on displaying his strength for no reason.]

Yeah. It's not all it's cracked up to be.

[He really isn't trying to brag. It's just fact.]

[Not all it's cracked up to be. What, did he bleed out too many times to even care anymore? That's how she humors herself, though little does she know, the kinds of violence . . . ]

No? You sound used to it. Too used to it.

What's that supposed to mean?

[He genuinely doesn't get what she's hinting at...but there is a little irritation in his tone.]

[Shelly, on the other hand, is as light-hearted as can be, one hand playing with the cigarette by flicking it back and forth.]

Do you get into fights often?

Sometimes.

[We're getting into territory that Shizuo doesn't like. He finishes off his own cigarette before dropping it on the ground and stamping it out with his shoe.]

[Well, that's an interesting way to put it out, she thinks. But with the (apparently not high) frequency of fights, she curiously states,]

You don't strike me as a soldier or a mercenary.

I'm not.

[He looks away.]

I'm a bodyguard.

[Of course, that's only the half of it. He's a bodyguard because he fights, not a fighter because he's a bodyguard. It's the only job he's been able to hold down.]

A bodyguard. [She takes on a sort of impressive tone, taking another look at Shizuo -- his appearance, and how . . . normal he appears, all things considered.] I couldn't have guessed. But that sounds perfect.

Stronger than I look.

[He looks back at her, slightly confused.]

Perfect?

Hm? Ah -- it seems like the perfect job for you. You have that . . . air about you.

Oh. Thanks. I guess.

[Not sure if that's a compliment, but he accepts it.]

What do you do?

[It is, Shizuo. It really is.]

Executive work, mostly. I run the senate where I'm from.

[She taps the side of the cigarette with a finger.]

It's not as grand as it may sound.

[More a headache, though less so as of late.]

[It might not be as grand as it sounds, but Shizuo is still impressed.]

Sounds like a big responsibility, though.

And I do what I can to live up to it. I would think being a bodyguard is just as important when someone's life depends upon you.

I guess you could put it that way.

[Hesitant pause.]

I have a temper, though.

. . . Is that a bad thing?

...Yeah. If I can't control it.

[Which, sometimes he couldn't.]

That's a crime practically everyone is guilty of.

Something tells me it's not like most people with you. But so long as it doesn't hinder your performance or hurt others, is it that big of a deal?

[He has hurt others. People who deserved it, sure, but also people who didn't. His family had to suffer because of what he was. But he doesn't say this out loud.]

I guess not.
