[Today, Mat's decided to look through all the selections of longbows, and if what he's muttering is any clue, he isn't finding what he's looking for. Only really seeing all the bows on his right doesn't help any.]

Blood and ashes...Too short. And that one feels about to crack... [He reaches for a couple more, lifting them individually before putting them back with a grumble, leaning on his ashandarei a bit.]

Too light. And that one was too heavy. [He turns left to better see the selection, lifting another possible choice before putting it back with a sigh.]

This one's too tall. And all of these probably wouldn't have enough flaming range. [Bother him?]

[So now he has to describe the type of bow...? Alright then. Maybe it'll help. He turns to look at Link.]

A longbow with a decent range. One made out of one piece of wood, preferably black yew. Hardest part so far has been finding one that's heavy enough and only a hand or two taller than me.

[He's...really kinda picky about this okay, okay. Two Rivers longbows are special.]

Oh... I'm not sure I've heard of black yew. [Either way, he's pretty sure his is made of Deku wood.] Why don't you find all the ones that are the right size, then the ones that are the right weight, and then see if any of those are made of one piece?

[That's not a bad idea, Link. He chuckles, beginning to sort through all of the bows that are taller than him.]

If I find one that's the right size and weight, I don't think I'd care if it was one piece or type of wood anymore. [Especially since he'd meant type and not piece in the first place. My fault oops]

[Link gives him a quick grin, passing over a bow that (to his eyes) looks to be a bit taller than him and gesturing to the bow on his back.] I never had to worry about looking for things like that. This one is right for me - although I guess it's a lot smaller, huh?

[Link has better depth perception than Mat does. Mat gives the bow he's handed a once over before putting it in one of the piles he's sorted them into. That done, he looks at the bow on Link's back.]

How long is it unstrung?

Most of the time, unless I'm using it or - [A brief shrug and a smile as he lifts the quiver -] testing new arrows. I didn't unstring it at all in Hyrule.

[He does sound a little embarrassed - unstringing it was something he only learnt later, in Vatheon - but in fairness, it did survive for a good long while in the Forest Temple.]

[...LINK. WHY. You better sound embarrassed, because even though that isn't really what Mat was asking, he's worried about your bow now--]

You left it strung all the time in your own world? [He...assumes that's what Hyrule is. Light, Link! Even when he was bloody paranoid because of that flaming dagger, he had enough sense to unstring his bloody bow everyday! ...at least he thinks he did. He doesn't actually remember much of that, but Rand would've teased him about it if he hadn't, wouldn't he?

He takes a deep breath.]

I meant how long is your bow when it's unstrung, compared to you.

...Oh. Right. It's... [Link tells him which the mun will handwave because she's never done archery, shifting a little awkwardly.]

...I only had it for about a month in Hyrule before I came here. And no one ever told me you were supposed to unstring it, I had to learn how to use it myself.

[The fairies really should have left an instruction manual somewhere...]

[Going to assume it's a fair bit shorter than him then! It looked like it would be anyway. Mat nods.]

You'd be able to use it on horseback, that's for sure.

[That actually makes him let out a sigh of relief. Thank the Light it wasn't longer. Though... He blinks.]

You had to learn how to use it yourself? How many times did you hit your arm with the string on accident? [...If no one told him how to use it, he didn't keep it out when it was raining without drying it off after, right?]

I have used it on horseback. [Link grins a little.] And on a chocobo, too.

[...Yeah, rubbing his arm in phantom pain.] A few times. But I had gauntlets on, and it wasn't too hard. [No rain! ...But he did go swimming with it in the Water Temple. A thousand archers simultaneously facepalm.]

What's a chocobo? [He...usually avoids the network.

And that makes him grin, like the 22 year old former farmboy he is.]

We usually had armguards, but gauntlets probably work just as well. [....Yeah. That's...a lot worse.]

There's these big bird things that people can ride! There's a whole lot that live here, mine's called Asi. He's green. [Pretty noticable, huh?]

[He probably shouldn't mention the temple inside the active volcano, the ice caverns, or the desert either then, huh.]

...A ride-able bird? [He...what. Just. What? And his is green? This is a strange place. Birds don't get big enough to ride back in the westlands!

And that'd probably be a good idea. Link, take care of your bow! Though those are better than the Water Temple for it.]

Yeah! I think some of them moved to the forest after Lea left - he had a whole lot. I bet you can see some there.

[He went from the Water Temple to a burning village. That counts as drying it, right?]

[Good enough, since you would put it by a fire to dry it. Just never mention it to him anyway. He chuckles.]

I guess I should go the forest sometime. If I can't find a bow I'll need to go there anyway, but that's another reason to.

[Maybe he can catch a badger there...]

There's lots of good things in the forest, not just chocobos! I live there, actually. [Once a forest boy, always a forest boy?]

What kinds of good things? [Yep yep! Does it have sheep? Mat can't tell if Link is like Rand was (a farmer away from the village) or just someone who likes camping out in the forest, but it doesn't matter that much. He just lives in the forest, it's cool.]

[Raised in one, actually.] All sorts of stuff! Birds and animals, and it's shady under the trees, and there's streams with fish in them. The forest I'm from had fairies, too.

[Was it like being raised in such a backwater village they didn't know it was part of a kingdom?

...what.] Fairies.

[Looking at the boy's ears, he might be telling the truth...The only ears he's seen like those are Zelda's, the woman who used...what had Matthew called it? Magic. That's it. It wasn't the One Power after all. But...Fairies. Really. He shakes his head.]

So it's like a regular forest that has streams.

[That's actually a fairly close approximation, yes.]

[Link huffs a little.] What's wrong with fairies? And I guess, but isn't that nice enough?

[Link, you're from the Hyrule universe's version of the Two Rivers then. Though you didn't grow up being a farmer.

Mat nods. He just. Won't reply to that fairy thing. THEY DON'T EXIST, that's what's right wrong with them.]

[Scratching the back of his head awkwardly, Link looks a little embarrassed.] Well... they're there if you want to see them, right?

[I can imagine. But who is he to say what's real and what's not? Everything they thought was just a story in the Two Rivers has turned out to be real. And most have chased them.

He nods again. The forest... He smiles.]

Burn me, I could look for black yew while looking for those Chocobos. [Though he probably would need Perrin's help to make the bow. But maybe then they'd all have bows they could use.

...Mat just will avoid Rand when he practices his archery. Magic is not something he wants to be around.]

[Link tilts his head, frowning in utter perplexity.] Why do you want someone to burn you?
