[Today, Mat's decided to look through all the selections of longbows, and if what he's muttering is any clue, he isn't finding what he's looking for. Only really seeing all the bows on his right doesn't help any.]

Blood and ashes...Too short. And that one feels about to crack... [He reaches for a couple more, lifting them individually before putting them back with a grumble, leaning on his ashandarei a bit.]

Too light. And that one was too heavy. [He turns left to better see the selection, lifting another possible choice before putting it back with a sigh.]

This one's too tall. And all of these probably wouldn't have enough flaming range. [Bother him?]

Wow! Really? [He just can't picture Zelda saying things like that... on the other hand.] I guess if you were a queen, no one could tell you not to say them.

Really! [It sure shocked them the first couple of times, but they got used to it. Another chuckle.]

Seems like it. Doesn't stop them from giving her disapproving looks when we're in private though. [We're meaning him, her secretary/treasurer/spymaster, Thom, Birgitte, Elayne, and her advisor. Them meaning the two who weren't named.]

[He laughs a little at that.] Do you know her really well? If you see her in private, and all.

[Not insinuating anything at all. ...No, really, he isn't actually insinuating anything.]

[He doesn't take it like that - this boy doesn't know his world's swears, he probably didn't mean it like that.]

Not as well as Rand, but you could say that. I've saved her hide a couple of times. [And he grew up with Rand, her would-be husband and the father of her unborn twins.]

I've saved people, too. [He says it more as idle observation, not as bragging.] Are you a hero?

[No. He's not. He's really not. He lets out a mildly strained chuckle.]

No. Light, I'm not a flaming hero. [Light was also a swear, but best not to mention that.]

[Flaming, burn me... Link really isn't quite sure what to make of his language.] Oh... okay. I thought you were, 'cause you saved someone.

[If that was what made someone a hero, he'd be one. So...he tugs on his scarf a bit, loosing it.]

I've saved people. I've saved quite a few people. But I'm not a bloody hero.

Oh... how come? [While the Sages may disagree - a Hero, capital H, is someone with ~destiny~ and a ~title~ and a ~magical sword~ - Link's own beliefs is that if you save people, that makes you a hero.]

[How come...?]

I'm just...not. [Saving them wasn't exactly heroic by any means in his mind, though he did save them repeatedly without someone telling him to, bar the time with Moiraine.]

I think you are if you save people. Anyway, I bet they thought you were a hero. [Link shrugs a little, although he's happy to let the subject go.]

[Sorry, did you just imply that flaming Aes Sedai thought he was a hero?

Sorry, Link, but that makes him cackle more than the implication being a princess means you don't swear. Sure Moiraine had thanked him, but Nynaeve, Egwene, and Elayne had flaming scolded him for rescuing them because they already had plans to escape, nevermind the fact that those plans probably wouldn't have worked.

After a couple of moments, he calms down.]

Kid, I don't think heroes get scolded by the people they save. Light, some of them acted like I had done worse than if I had ignored the fact that they were captured.

[...Was it something he said?]

[Looking rather bemused at it all, Link waits for the cackling to die down.] Why would they tell you off? That's really mean!

[He leans on the spear and makes a sort of one armed shrug, lifting the free hand in the air.]

Dunno. Nynaeve's used to telling me off, since she was our Wisdom. She was the one who always told me to mind my language. Not sure why Elayne and Egwene also told me off.

[Link pulls a face. He's still not sure why someone would tell someone off for saving them... isn't being captured a bad thing?] Oh... what do you mean, she was your Wisdom?

[Anything like the Triforce of Wisdom?]

[Right. He smiles a little. Explaining makes him think that Link really is a child, and he likes children, even if he's sure he'd be a horrible father.]

A Wisdom's like a midwife or a healer. When people got sick, it was her job to help them get better if she could. It was also her job to tell us what the weather was going to be, since she could Listen to the Wind. Most villages have a Mayor and a Wisdom, where I'm from, though they might call the Wisdom something else.

Nynaeve was the village Wisdom.

[A thoughtful nod.] That sounds pretty handy... does she make potions? There's an old lady in Kakariko that does that. I don't think she can tell what the weather is, though.

If you mean herbal remedies, then yes, she makes potions.

[Light knows she made him drink a lot of them, whenever he lied and whenever he got sick. He makes a face at the thought of the taste of those, what little he remembered of them anyway, and then shrugs.]

Nynaeve was able to tell because she can use saidar. Is the old woman a mage? [That's one of the names Matthew had said magic users go by in his world. Worth a try.]

A mage? ['Mage' kind of sounds like 'magic', right?] You mean, using magic? I don't know - some of the potions do make you able to use magic more, though. What's saidar, is that a kind of magic too?

Yeah. And saidar's the female half of the magic back in my world. Saidin's the male half.

[A blink. Potions that act as angreal and sa'angreal?]

That sounds like those potions are made with magic to me.

They might be. The blue one has a mushroom in it, though... maybe it was a magic mushroom. [He shrugs a little, not sure what else to add. Potions were potions, weren't they?]

[A magic. Mushroom. He blinks at Link.]

You have magic plants? [Mushrooms are totally plants.]

[What is modern study of mycology.]

Well... I guess so! The Great Deku Tree was magic, I think.

[What is a flashlight that isn't made with magic.]

The Great Deku Tree? [Is that anything like the Avendesora? The Tree of Life?]

[One that's made with fire?]

Uh huh. He was the protector of the forest. [Sounding a little forlorn there, before he shakes his head.] But the Deku Sprout will do a good job, too!
