[Today, Mat's decided to look through all the selections of longbows, and if what he's muttering is any clue, he isn't finding what he's looking for. Only really seeing all the bows on his right doesn't help any.]

Blood and ashes...Too short. And that one feels about to crack... [He reaches for a couple more, lifting them individually before putting them back with a grumble, leaning on his ashandarei a bit.]

Too light. And that one was too heavy. [He turns left to better see the selection, lifting another possible choice before putting it back with a sigh.]

This one's too tall. And all of these probably wouldn't have enough flaming range. [Bother him?]

[Link pulls a face. He's still not sure why someone would tell someone off for saving them... isn't being captured a bad thing?] Oh... what do you mean, she was your Wisdom?

[Anything like the Triforce of Wisdom?]

[Right. He smiles a little. Explaining makes him think that Link really is a child, and he likes children, even if he's sure he'd be a horrible father.]

A Wisdom's like a midwife or a healer. When people got sick, it was her job to help them get better if she could. It was also her job to tell us what the weather was going to be, since she could Listen to the Wind. Most villages have a Mayor and a Wisdom, where I'm from, though they might call the Wisdom something else.

Nynaeve was the village Wisdom.

[A thoughtful nod.] That sounds pretty handy... does she make potions? There's an old lady in Kakariko that does that. I don't think she can tell what the weather is, though.

If you mean herbal remedies, then yes, she makes potions.

[Light knows she made him drink a lot of them, whenever he lied and whenever he got sick. He makes a face at the thought of the taste of those, what little he remembered of them anyway, and then shrugs.]

Nynaeve was able to tell because she can use saidar. Is the old woman a mage? [That's one of the names Matthew had said magic users go by in his world. Worth a try.]

A mage? ['Mage' kind of sounds like 'magic', right?] You mean, using magic? I don't know - some of the potions do make you able to use magic more, though. What's saidar, is that a kind of magic too?

Yeah. And saidar's the female half of the magic back in my world. Saidin's the male half.

[A blink. Potions that act as angreal and sa'angreal?]

That sounds like those potions are made with magic to me.

They might be. The blue one has a mushroom in it, though... maybe it was a magic mushroom. [He shrugs a little, not sure what else to add. Potions were potions, weren't they?]

[A magic. Mushroom. He blinks at Link.]

You have magic plants? [Mushrooms are totally plants.]

[What is modern study of mycology.]

Well... I guess so! The Great Deku Tree was magic, I think.

[What is a flashlight that isn't made with magic.]

The Great Deku Tree? [Is that anything like the Avendesora? The Tree of Life?]

[One that's made with fire?]

Uh huh. He was the protector of the forest. [Sounding a little forlorn there, before he shakes his head.] But the Deku Sprout will do a good job, too!

[Torches are common, same with lanterns. But things like flashlights that aren't magic balls of light? What are those?

Mat tilts his head a little, scratching his chin.]

So the old tree died and now a new tree's the protector of the bloody forest?

Uh huh. I hope he'll do a good job, I came here really soon after the Deku Sprout grew.

[...Really really fast.]

Well, the old tree must've started out just like the new one is right now, so he'll probably do bloody fine.

[Why he's referring to a tree as a he, he doesn't know. But he has this feeling that if Loial ever meets this boy, they'll have something to talk about. From the little he remembers about Loial anyway.]

[Link nods firmly.] He will. I don't know how old the Great Deku Tree is -- was, but he must have been little a long time ago. I hope there were less monsters.

[...He hopes someone will deal with them in general, now that he can't. Expression falling a bit.]

[Oh he's apparently worried or sad about something that he remembered. How to distract...]

Well, if there were the same amount of monsters as there are now, he'd have done fine so the new tree will too. [distract distract...]

Hey, boy, know any songs? [It's something he's noticed the time he's been here. He's not used to there not being soft music at night around campfires.]

[Distraction successful! Link is dragged out of his thoughts by the mention, lighting up a little.] I know a lot! I learnt some when I was in Hyrule, and there's lots of music here I want to learn, too.

[Mat grins, both at the fact the distraction worked and that the boy knew songs.]

Mind teaching me some sometime? I may not be able to play a flute or a harp, but I can sing. [Not the best voice he's heard, but better than others.]

I could teach you some of my world's songs in return if you want. [Then he'd at least hear some familiar tunes sometime that weren't played or hummed by him or his two friends. Maybe he could convince Rand to find some instrument he could play with only one hand. Or deal with Rand playing using saidin.]

Oh... [He deflates a little.] I don't think they have words. Malon used to sing Epona's song, but she just hummed, I think.

[Maybe Mat can be the same? At any rate, he's intrigued now.] Can I learn some of your world's songs even if my ones don't have words?

[Mat smiles.]

I hum songs a lot, I don't mind there being no words.

[Having no words is sometimes better...And he nods.]

Sure. A friend of mine can play instruments and he's here too. I could ask him if he'd like to learn your songs. I know he won't mind playing ours. [Rand would have changed too much if he didn't like playing anymore. The real question would be whether they could find a instrument he could play with just a right hand or if he'd have to use saidin.]

Okay! [Link gives Mat a grin.] Then we can go see your friend, and I'll teach you some songs and he can teach me some!

[Mat's smile falls away. Rand's...]

You'll have to wait to learn them from him. He's...asleep. And has been for too bloody long. We're not sure when he'll flaming wake up.

[Even if it hasn't been that long for a sleep coma - only a bit more than a week - but he doesn't know that it really is common.]

I'll make sure to let him know when he wakes up. [Oh and...] What's your name? [leaving off the 'boy' this time.] I'm Mat.

Oh... that's not fun. I bet he'll wake up eventually, though, right?

[He gives Mat a hopefully-reassuring smile.] I'm Link. It's nice to meet you!

I hope so. [Link really reminds him more of a little boy than a teenager...

He tilts his hat a little, smiling.]

And you.

[They can start a cool hat club.]

Well - I should let you get back to finding a bow, huh? I'll keep looking out for them, too!
