[Shizuo isn't as bothered by this curse as some of the people he's come across thus far. He tends not to be a pretty deep-thinker, and since he's a pretty honest individual, there isn't much for him to hide - with a little exception, but Shizuo has enough of a command on himself to avoid thinking about certain things in public. When he decides to go to the island, it's not with the intent to avoid people - at least, not more than usual - but because spending time here a week prior had shown Shizuo that the beach is nice and calm at night. The stars are especially peaceful.

His thought bubble calmly cycles through words like Izaya, stargazing, telescope, calm as he finishes a cigarette, walking along the water. He pauses and looks up at the night sky, and his bubble seems to pause with him - clearing itself of all text for a brief moment.]

[When did this turn into a discussion about me? Shizuo's bubble asks. He narrows his eyes behind his shades at that smirk, then sighs.]

I'm not lazy.

[Maybe a little weak-willed...]

I know I can control it more, now, but sometimes I still lose it.

[His bubble narrates his more recent fights - getting annoyed by locals, taking it a little too far with Serph during their first fight...]

I've been dealing with it for years. I know that it's because my emotions take control.

[It's always been his anger that has been difficult to keep in check.]

I'm trying.

Why do you lose it, though? Because it feels good. Because it's a release. It's not because you absolutely can't control it.

[Vegeta knows very well how good it feels to just let loose, and his bubble shows as much - the prince with a tall bald man and a man with knee-length hair, tearing through an entire city in a bloody massacre with no regard for who they're fighting. In the image, Vegeta can't be older than ten.]

Bah. If you're just going to say things like "I'm trying", we don't need to talk anymore. Don't try. Do.

[It does feel good. One of Shizuo's best - and most accepting - memories is of tearing through a very large group of people who might as well have been zombies with the way they came after him, claiming to love him. Shizuo had been able to completely give into his strength, then, and had come out feeling not only free, but useful. He had used it for a purpose.

And that reminds him of his conversation with Trunks, and the name surfaces in his bubble.]

It's easier if I have a reason to use it. [But that's just an off-handed comment. He knows Vegeta is right - that he has a very valid point.]

Okay. I will.

[Easier said than done, but Vegeta still counted as his first sort-of-mentor and Shizuo doesn't doubt the truth behind his words. Nor does he bother to hide the fact that yeah, he wants to prove that he can.]

Hnn.

[Vegeta nods. It IS easier if there is an outlet, but it has to be one that's chosen, not an uncontrolled explosion of power.]

You can still try to fight me if you want to. Or...

[He purposefully calls forth an image of Trunks, jerking his head towards his bubble.]

That kid. He would probably just stand there and let you use him as a punching bag. It's not very satisfying, though.

I met him. We talked about meditation.

[Among other things. Trunks had been pretty nice, considering the fact that Shizuo had attacked him more or less unprovoked. And Shizuo wasn't without training partners, now - Serph was helping him, too. But Serph wasn't as strong as Shizuo...and really, Shizuo had never wanted to stop fighting Vegeta. Not even after he had crushed all his bones, even if that had been an unexpectedly scary experience.]

I still want to fight you.

[Because Vegeta was stronger, and because he called Shizuo out bluntly and urged him to be better - his bubble rattles off.]

[Vegeta's thought bubble becomes blank - evidently, he knows how to meditate too. After that he powers down like Trunks taught him to and grins at Shizuo, throwing a sudden punch right towards the other man's face. Still wanting to fight means right now, doesn't it?]

[The punch makes contact and Shizuo takes a couple of steps back with the force, but smiles, because this is exactly what he wants from Vegeta. And since he isn't angry or worked up, he's able to make more practical decisions about the way he uses his strength. Once he's stabilized his footing, Shizuo counters with a punch of his own.]

[Rather than dodge Shizuo's punch, Vegeta meets it with his fist and pushes forward. At first it's easy for him to do so, but he's decided to make this an exercise in learning now to power down. He adjusts his power level until it's roughly even with Shizuo's, then keeps pushing.]

[Shizuo's surprised that Vegeta tones himself down and doesn't overtake him so easily. It motivates him to be a little more mindful of what he is doing. He continues to push his fist forward, trying to focus more of his strength into his fist. He's not interesting in trying to do anything underhanded to try and break their contact - instead, he just tries in earnest to push Vegeta's fist back.]

[It's somehow tiring to fight at this level with his ki suppressed, but Vegeta perseveres. If Shizuo ever seems to lose his head, he powers up briefly to deliver a quick "watch yourself" smack to the side of his face. It's what his father did if he ever stepped out of line, after all.

Until he surpassed him, at least.

He tries his best to throw some defensive moves in there and teach Shizuo to use them too, ducking and keeping his body as small as possible. The bodyguard is tall, he needs to learn to cover himself. If Shizuo doesn't copy the moves, he thwacks the areas that are left open to indicate where he needs to be watching. None of the exchange is verbal. With the thought bubbles, it doesn't have to be - Vegeta's thoughts show what Shizuo should do.]

[Shizuo manages to exchange blows without getting too caught up, though he does drift toward anger a couple of times, and therefore earns that "watch yourself" smack, which he is glad for. It helps him focus on what he's trying to do - train, rather than actually win a fight. It's no surprise when Vegeta finally surpasses him, but Shizuo feels nice and refreshed when the exchange is over - a little better overall.

Shizuo does try to learn as much as possible as he spars with Vegeta, just as he tries when sparring with Serph. If he can learn, then he can find control. He pays close attention to the thought bubble and does his best to keep up. He isn't the fastest learner, but he isn't slow, either.

When they're done, Shizuo takes a seat in the sand, completely unbothered by it. Two sparring session in one day is a lot even for him, so he's a little spent - but in a good way. The kind of way that makes him feel better and more on top of himself.]

[He seems pleased.]

You're not bad. Could turn into a decent enough fighter, even if you're human.

[Vegeta looks down towards where the bubble is thoughtfully.]

Probably worth a try, at least. Never know what this place is going to throw at you.

I'm going to try.

[He already is trying, but he's going to try even harder, now. He feels extra motivated - maybe because of Vegeta's bluntness. Or maybe because they had trained again, and Shizuo could feel his progress. Either way, he is feeling optimistic, and his bubble rambles about his plans to continue on a good path.]

Yeah. I heard that people have been attacked here before.

[Celty had mentioned it a while back. Being a decent fighter would come in handy if it happened again.]
