After just two weeks in this place, Laharl is homesick. Not that he would ever use the word, but he misses his Netherworld--his castle, his coffin, his vassals (well, ordering them around)... He ought to be there right now, enjoying his newly cemented position.

Hitting the books wouldn't normally be on his list of options, but unfortunately there's no obvious leader here to beat up. Creating dimensional portals is something his gatekeeper does every day, surely an Overlord won't have any trouble learning it. The primary obstacle to this plan is the lack of a teacher or, as it turns out, any books he can find on the subject.

The pint-sized demon is in a foul mood as he exits the library. The bookshelves where he had been working barely survived (although he left a real mess), and he'd really like to destroy something or someone more worth his while.

If he seems to be looking for a fight, it's because he is.

"Talk?" What could he possibly want to talk to this kid about?

"If you mean you want to beg for mercy, go right ahead, but don't expect it to change my mind."

Beg for... mercy? Oh, no. Definitely not. Ruca might be a pushover ~~or even a walking doormat~~, but there were some limits even in his case. If he did something really bad he would consider Laharl's... demand, but after something like this?

"...Um, aren't you... exaggerating a little...?" he asked in a quiet voice.

"Exaggerating?"

Laharl raised an eyebrow. What, was the kid still expecting to get out of this scott-free?

"I mean..." he hesitated a little. "...I know it was my fault, but nothing bad happened... right?"

Laharl thought he knew where the kid was going with that now, but his eyebrows only rose a little higher.

"Did you want something bad to happen?"

Ruca shook his head.

"Oh, no! Of course not!" he answered quickly.

"Then it's settled," Laharl said, folding his arms decisively.

"Settled...?" Ruca repeated. "W-wait a moment. You can't just... decided things like that."

Well, people had always told Ruca that he needed to speak up, so he did that just now. He wasn't sure if this will change anything, but it was worth giving a try.

"And why not? You gonna do something about it?"

If the kid actually had any fight in him, he was up for that, but he doubted it.

"W-well..."

Why was talking back to someone always so hard.

"I'm just... not going to listen to you." he turned to leave. "And I should get going anyway, so..."

Trying to run away now, but that was the best thing he could do.

Laharl's frown returned at this affront to his authority and he stalked forward, trying to get in front of Ruca and bar his path.

"I can make you listen."

Ruca sighed.

"...Why...?" Why things like that had to always happen to him? What was he supposed to do now?

This was probably the first time in his life when he thought that going to the library was a bad idea.

"Because I can and I feel like it. What other reason do I need?"

Ruca frowned.

"But... it isn't right."

"I'm a demon. I'm not in the business of doing what's 'right.'"

Hearing the word "demon" made Ruca look thoughtful.

"A demon, huh."

You thought he'd be scared? Well, he was not. In fact it was quite interesting to meet another demon! Especially since Laharl was so much different from any other demon Ruca had ever seen.

...well, a little fear would have been nice. Laharl wasn't expecting thoughtfulness.

"If you know anything about demons, then I shouldn't have to explain myself," he continued grumpily.

Ruca smiled somewhat awkwardly.

"Um, you're a little different from the demons I..." he paused not sure what word should he use. "...have seen before."

"Different how?" Laharl asked suspiciously. This sounded like an insult.

He didn't mean to insult anyone!

"Well you, um... don't have horns." And you're smaller than any demon he had seen before.

"What, that's it? Plenty of demons don't have horns."

"But the demons I've seen before had them. Some also had tails and claws..." they were also much bigger. "B-but I suppose the appearance doesn't matter that much..." he smiled sheepishly, then looked thoughtful again. "... Ah, right. If you're a demon, you must be extremely strong..."

Nice recovery, Ruca. That bit about tails had him glowering again, because girls have tails.

But then his expression turned more smug. "Exactly. Far stronger than anyone here, including you."

Well, he was probably going to destroy it now and get himself in trouble, because--

"...How can you be so sure about that?" he then quickly added: "I-I mean, I don't doubt your strength, but... there are a lot of powerful people here..."

It didn't seem to put a dent in Laharl's expression, but he did go right ahead and insult Ruca in turn.

"Hmph. It must be hard for a spineless little worm like you to comprehend this kind of certainty. I'm Overlord. My strength is unparallelled."
