A return of sorts

[It's not a fun thing, discovering your ex has quite possibly gone off the deep end. It's even worse when he decides to shove you like unwanted trash at a 15 foot man-looking sorceress who's about to Junction you to her. Just as Adel reached for her, Rinoa screamed and tried to scramble back...

And suddenly found herself soaking wet and stumbling backwards into a fountain. She sputters and splashes, trying to regain her focus. When the panic finally subsides and she's calm enough to think, she slowly climbs out of the fountain, spitting out some of the water she swallowed. Yuck.

Once she's on the edge of the fountain, she sits and looks around, taking in the... strangely familiar surroundings. A bubble under the sea. She's seen this before.]

...Oh.

[Vatheon. Her second home.]

I'm back.

[She notices that, and tilts her head curiously.]

*Oh, so Rinny noticed her gaping mouth. Selphie looks a little sheepish, glancing down at her boots as she scuffs them on the ground*

Nothin'.. Just wanted to ask how everyone was... but, I guess I knew that cause, I was there.

*Cause what she wants to know is how everyone is now, and if they miss her*

Everyone's all right. It's so weird, looking back. Couldn't remember a thing about Vatheon, and you and Squall were there... It's so bizarre in hindsight.

Yeah... That's the weirdest thing. I went away for months and you guys were there the whole time. And and, it didn't even seem like I'd been away any place else.

It's like this whole place is a dream. We blink and we're here, we blink and we're gone.

[She shook her head.]

Anyway, how have things been since I was gone? Squall behaving himself?

*Selphie rolls her eyes a little*

He's more of a grump than usual when you're not around.

So nothing new. [She smiles faintly at that.]

*She smiles at Rinoa, giving a knowing look. After all, Selphie knows where that relationship goes, she just doesn't know where Rinoa and Squall are at with it here in Vatheon*

[Eyebrow raised and arms crossed. She knows that look, she's just not sure why Selphie's giving it to her.]

*Selphie grins, a little impish, then hides a smile behind her hand*

But you do know that he's ten times easier to be around when you're here, right?

Not really? I mean, I can't know that because I'm not around when it happens.

[Squall spent 17 years without her around, after all. Then again, he was a pretty big grump when they met.]

He's had a lot on his plate anyway. I'm sure I didn't help with that.

*Selphie thinks about this, suddenly looking quite serious*

Bout as much as any of us...

*Only Squall showed it with his mood, and Selphie just kept things hidden*

[She gives Selphie's hand a squeeze.]

I know. I'm sorry for it, all of it. He just isn't equipped enough to deal with it properly. He's been getting better, but... we got into a fight over it, when he came to visit.

*Selphie smiles at Rinoa, giving her hand a small squeeze back, tilting her head*

Why...what happened?

Basically, he took responsibility for what Riffael did. Blames himself for not being a good leader and protecting everyone in the city. Of course I told him it wasn't his fault, but he wouldn't listen.

I tried to tell him... but he's just so stubborn and just so... selfish.

*Selphie folded her arms over her chest - yeah, she counts it as selfish not to share the glory of protecting, and for not allowing her to share in the blame*

Selfish? Well, I guess that's one way to look at it. But he didn't listen to you either, huh.

[Serph had promised to talk to him, so she's hoping that panned out. If anyone could knock sense into Squall, it was him.]

*Selphie smiled at her friend and put a hand on her shoulder, smiling up at her*

If there's anyone in this whole universe that Squall would listen to, it's you.

[He was not listening to her before, but perhaps with some time passed, he might now.]

We'll see. I'm not mad about it anymore. I can kind of... understand where he's coming from a lot better.

*Selphie smiles at that too*

It's nice...you guys. I mean, you'd never've thought it but I love how you guys just totally understand each other.

*And yeah, maybe she's jumping ahead of Squall and Rinoa's timelines a little*

Well, I think Squall might beg to differ, but that would be his pride talking.

[Although Rinoa isn't caught up to where Selphie is, and she and Squall have a few Vatheon-related kinks to work out, she certainly understands Selphie's words much better than she would have just days ago.]

*Selphie smiles at that and shrugs slightly* Guess that's Squall just being Squall.

*She bows her head, looking down at the toes of her boots, tapping against the ground*

Must be nice though...ya know, to have someone like that...

*Because she can't imagine anyone really understanding her*
