BIRTHDAY BASH OF THE AGES (aka Squall's Birthday Party)
[It's the 23rd of August. And one particular Lion is turning 18 today. You know what that means.
BIRTHDAY PARTY!
It's here at last! If you're up on the island near the bay at around 8 PM, you'll see all these damn tiki lamps all over the place. There's also a huge tent set up with food set up underneath it, mainly appetizers and snacky foods. Also, drinks! No booze, although if any is brought Rinoa will tolerate it so long as it doesn't get out of hand.
The main entry on the food table are the three cakes set up, all in the shape of Griever. One is large while the other two are smaller. So there's plenty of cake to go around, thanks to Johnny!
Right next to the food tent is the battery-powered boombox which is blasting all kinds of music. There's a nice stack of CDs on the stand with it, so pick out any music you like and feel free to blare it!
And last but not least, there's a beach volleyball net set up for anyone to play, whether it's one on one or in teams. Or, really, if you just want to smack the ball around. Try not to lose it in the ocean though :(
Like Rinoa said in her post, everyone is invited. She opened it to the whole bubble for a reason. So come on by, even if you don't have a present for Squall, or even know him. Just remember to pester him and say happy birthday~at your own peril]
((OOC: It's up! Everyone tag in! I'll be putting up threads shortly for the different sections of the party. Seriously though, don't feel intimidated if you don't know the party thrower (Rinoa) or the VIP (Squall). This is a good chance to mingle and build CR, especially for newcomers. Feel free to have them just... wander up to the island and see what all the noise is about.))

Triple Triad is card game played on a 3x3 grid. There's different variations on how to play, but I'll teach you the basics.
[Finding an empty spot on the table, Squall produces a pen and draws out the grid. No worries about damage, it'll wash right off easily. And like any self respecting card player, he carries cards with him. He produces one to show Serph.]
Each player chooses five cards from their collections. Depending on the rules, you may have to lay them out for your opponent to see. Each has four numbers. These represent that card's strength on each of its side. The top number represents its strength at the top of the card, the left one is the strength of the left side and so on. There are ten numbers. 1 is the lowest, and the number ten is represented by the letter A. It's the strongest.
You decide who goes first by flipping a coin. The first player chooses a card to place on the grid. [For the purpose of demonstration, he places the Bite Bug card in the center space.] And the other player does the same.
[Taking out another card, he puts it to the right of the Bite Bug.]
When you place two cards right next to each other, you compare their numbers. Whichever number is higher is the winner, and the card is captured by the player who currently controls that card. If the number wasn't higher, then nothing would happen. This continues until all nine spaces are filled. Whoever controls the most cards at the end is the winner.
Once the game is over, ownership of cards changes. There's several different methods for this, but the most common one is the winner gets to pick one card the loser used and keep it for himself. Those are the basic rules.

Are you willing to play right now?
[Because Serph sure is!!]
no subject
Sure.
[He pulls out the rest of the cards he has with him, all piled up in a neat deck. He shuffles them and cuts the deck in half, giving one half to Serph. Both halves will have a good mix of high and low level cards.]
We'll play with just the basic rules so you get the idea of how it works.

Do I need to show my cards to you?
[Squall had said that the cards can be laid out depending on rules, after all...]
no subject
Sure, we'll do that. It's called the Open rule. Choose five cards you like.
[To make things a little more interesting, he's going to let luck choose his cards even though they're not using the Random rule. Squall gives his half of the deck another shuffle and draws five cards in one go. He then lays them out for Serph to see.
...ha ha Serph, look at that card of the goofy looking guy. He's got a tattoo on the left side of his face like you.]
I DICE ROLLED AND LOOK AT WHAT I GOT
Serph doesn't really want to look through Squall's massive deck, so he, too, decides to randomly pick. First flipping the card in his hand so Squall can see it, Serph goes on to flip the next four cards off the top of his half of Squall's collection.
Laid out, they show...
. . . . . . ]
They made a card of you, too?
TECHNICALLY HE WOULDN'T HAVE THAT ONE AT HIS CANON POINT BUT WHO CARES
[Looks like luck was kind to Serph. That's a pretty good assortment for randomly chosen cards. Why do Triple Triad cards of individual people even exist? Who knows. Canon never explains it. He points to the card of Zell.]
This one is of a friend of mine.
[His first real friend...]
To decide who goes first, you flip a coin. When I flip, say either "heads" or "tails." [He shows which side corresponds to which word.] If you call it right, you can decide whether you want to go first or second. If you get it wrong, I get to pick.
[He takes out a gil, one that he's had ever since arriving in Vatheon. It's monetary value is worthless, but it's a nice reminder of home. And good for games of Triple Triad.
...LE FLIP!]
LOOK HE TOTALLY GOT IT FROM THE NOSTALGIA NOOK, WHICH STOCKS CARDS FROM THE FUTURE!!!
Hm.]
Heads.

Heads.
[Which means Serph will get to choose.]
