BIRTHDAY BASH OF THE AGES (aka Squall's Birthday Party)

[It's the 23rd of August. And one particular Lion is turning 18 today. You know what that means.

BIRTHDAY PARTY!

It's here at last! If you're up on the island near the bay at around 8 PM, you'll see all these damn tiki lamps all over the place. There's also a huge tent set up with food set up underneath it, mainly appetizers and snacky foods. Also, drinks! No booze, although if any is brought Rinoa will tolerate it so long as it doesn't get out of hand.

The main entry on the food table are the three cakes set up, all in the shape of Griever. One is large while the other two are smaller. So there's plenty of cake to go around, thanks to Johnny!

Right next to the food tent is the battery-powered boombox which is blasting all kinds of music. There's a nice stack of CDs on the stand with it, so pick out any music you like and feel free to blare it!

And last but not least, there's a beach volleyball net set up for anyone to play, whether it's one on one or in teams. Or, really, if you just want to smack the ball around. Try not to lose it in the ocean though :(

Like Rinoa said in her post, everyone is invited. She opened it to the whole bubble for a reason. So come on by, even if you don't have a present for Squall, or even know him. Just remember to pester him and say happy birthday~ at your own peril]

((OOC: It's up! Everyone tag in! I'll be putting up threads shortly for the different sections of the party. Seriously though, don't feel intimidated if you don't know the party thrower (Rinoa) or the VIP (Squall). This is a good chance to mingle and build CR, especially for newcomers. Feel free to have them just... wander up to the island and see what all the noise is about.))

[Munch munch munch on caaaaaake. Oh hey, it's Serph! Rinoa waves back with a smile, her mouth too full of cakey goodness to be able to talk at the moment.]

[Serph nods. He's enjoyed it a lot! It's not like he's been to many birthday parties.]

You've put a lot of effort in this.

As much as I could on short notice. If I had more time I might have done more, but... I don't think it's too shabby. Besides, I didn't want to overwhelm the birthday boy too much.

[bufudine]

[Serph nods. He can imagine Squall arriving, then promptly turning around and leaving. He's a little curious, though.]

What else would you have done?

Figure out some way to get a source of power up here. Also, maybe a live band rather than just a stereo? I'm not sure.

[Her thought process throughout the past week was more focused on what she could do with what she had, rather than what she would have liked to have done.]

[Serph thinks for a moment. Okay so, birthdays mean parties to celebrate the beginning of a person's life. But her flyer had made a special mention to the fact Squall turned 18. So the age is important, too?]

How old would you be when it's your birthday?

Eighteen as well.

["Adult" age, although she's not sure how much that means here in Vatheon. Still, it's another birthday and she's young yet, so it's exciting to get older.]

[Eighteen, huh... So an adult, by Gale's definition.]

Is the age important, with birthdays?

Some ages are more important than others. Although when you're a kid, every one is important to you. You just want to grow up and be bigger.

[bufudine]

[Grow... up? From a child to an adult?

Serph tilts his head.]

Why are some more important than others?

[sorcery_fledgling]

Well, back home, the law allows you to do certain things at certain ages. 16 and 18 are pretty important; at 16, you're allowed to learn how to drive, which is a big deal for teenagers who want to get the heck out of their houses and have some freedom. 18 is important because you're seen as an adult.

[bufudine]

[There's an age limit on driving? Teen...agers? Getting out of houses for freedom? Serph's quite frankly, a little bewildered.]

Why is being seen as an adult important?

[As far as Serph's concerned, children are just smaller sized adults...]

Because being an adult means independence. From the time you're born, you rely on your parents for a lot of things. And it's fine when you're a kid, but once you get a little older, you want to be able to do things on your own.

[bufudine]

[Parents, huh...]

Why do you need to rely on your parents?

[He doesn't really understand.]

Um, when you're born as a baby, you don't know anything. Just know how to cry, eat, poop, and sleep. It's up to your parents and family mostly to teach you stuff and to take care of you.

[And she'll just keep going because he seems to have no idea what this concept is.] Even when you get a little older and can do more on your own, you still need their guidance. That and the law says you're supposed to live with them until you're at least 18 years old. [Of course, she broke that law wide open.]

[bufudine]

[Serph can understand laws; his life had mostly been ruled by flawed laws. But hmm... Gale's definition of a child had been a human aged 4 to 15, not 4 to 18. Maybe it's different there?

He tilts his head.]

So... a baby is a human younger than 4?

[Rinoa, can you tell all this is completely foreign to him?]

[Yes, yes she can. And she's trying her best to lay it out for him.]

Mmm. I think humans are considered babies up until about a year and a half old. Then they become toddlers until about four. Then they're just children until they reach thirteen, when they're teenagers. You're technically a teenager until you're twenty, although the law declares you an adult at 18, so it overlaps a bit.

[bufudine]

That seems overly complicated.

[Can't you people just all be adults from your very first memory!?]
