From one underwater city to another

Who: Ganondorf and you. Yes, you.
What: Showin' up and causing trouble without lifting a finger
Where: near the Lamufao
When: When normal people should be sleeping
Style: Brackets, brackets, unto infinity
Status: Open like a book

[If anyone is up at this late hour and happens to wander over to the Lamufao, they may just find an absurdly tall elderly gentleman hunched over on one of the benches nearby. He looks terribly tired, as if he had just recently seen everything he had worked for snatched from his grasp and the world fall down about him. Inwardly, while he's too tired to do much angsting about apparently being dead, he certainly finds it ironic that what appears to be the afterlife is an underwater city not unlike the one he had spent the greater part of his life sealed in, and where he had been turned to stone.

Go bother him?]

[She nods in the small pause available, listening to his words with an expression of increasing pain.]

So we have all been slated to play these roles since before our lives ever began.

[No. It can't be this way. If this is the story that's been written down for them, she's going to change every word that she's yet to read. She still hates Ganondorf for what he's done, but even more than that she hates the idea of being locked in an eternal conflict.

One that Link will have to fight for her every time. The chosen hero.

It has to stop.

Zelda extends her hand towards Ganondorf. Her fingers are curled hesitantly, but she's holding it out nonetheless.]

No more.

[Link exhales, glancing back at Sola and gesturing for him to follow.]

If Zelda agrees, then I agree too. [He holds his hand out as well, hesitating for just a moment before letting it rest lightly on Zelda's.]

[Alliance or not, he's still very much not keen to touch Ganondorf at all. But a truce? If it could protect Hyrule, if it could ensure safety for him and Zelda and Sola so long as they're here, then he's willing to accept it.]

[She starts just a bit when he actually takes her hand, but resists the urge to jerk away and start yelling for Link. They have to start somewhere. She relaxes when Link lays his hand on theirs, continuing to speak.]

I am glad to hear it. If we untangle the secrets of this place, we can return to our homes with our memories intact... and hopefully, together.

[Going to pick Ganondorf up from a flooded Hyrule in the future sounds the opposite of pleasant. It's best if he's just there to start with.]

You were speaking of terms earlier. Mine are simple. I would ask that you do not attempt to take land. There is much space in Hyrule's fields, I am not against the Gerudo making use of it so long as they follow our laws - no stealing, no killing, and no kidnapping our men. They are free to pursue them as long as there is nothing forceful about it. I would ask that you follow these laws as well. In addition to that, the women of the Gerudo, and the life that you have created...

[She looks back to Sola.]

Allow them to have their own lives if they wish it. If they still want to look to you as a leader, then so be it. I do not want to ever see a repeat of what happened to Nabooru, nor do I want Sola to have to fight Link again.

[The shadow remains back as Link walks forward, despite his brother's gesture. He still remains as Zelda opens her mouth again, trying to be unnoticed... at least, until the princess speaks and his eyes widen in shock.

"the life that you have created... Allow them to have their own lives"

It seems as if everything stops, hinging on what Ganondorf's response is. Will he be a simple minion? Or will be be able to be Sola, have a life and a family and a matesprit?

Or would their words even make any difference when he knows in the core of himself that he still is required to follow his master's word as law, even if given a life. Having a life and having freedom... they're two separate things.

Even so, ears back and breath held, the shadow's eyes train on the Gerudo king, waiting for an answer.]

[Link barely hears the last part as he drops his hand and reaches for Sola's, grinning as he turns to face his brother.]

[No more needing to fight. No more battles to the death. The Water Temple need never happen again.]

Of course. I will make it clear to them as well, I simply wanted to make sure we were on the same page if they choose to follow you.

[Link's grin is infectious. The princess takes her hand back and folds both in front of herself, smiling just a little as well. This certainly wasn't what she'd expected upon waking up to the feeling of her worst enemy in Vatheon, but she'll take it. Now all that's left is to actually find a method to leave with her memories intact.

Going home and getting back to sleep sounds very appealing.]

[He'd called him the "boy". Not shadow, not replica, not construct, but boy. Like a real person.

Overcome, Sola runs to Link and throws his arms around his brother. He still has worries. What if Ganon is lying, for instance? But for now they all fall aside in the personal joy of his relative freedom.

He doesn't have to fight. He doesn't have to die.

He can have his own life.]
