[ Quite honestly, Hanako doesn't know what the hell she is doing. She knows almost nothing about Pokemon, or what they do, other than quick explanations about battling and breeding... she's not even sure if she wants to let that poor ghost-like creature fight at all. But apparently, this curse kind of forced her to keep it, so she'll have to make the best of it until it wears out. And surely this poor thing needs to be fed, too.

Being this the first time she steps in the forest, Hanako takes some time admiring the surroundings. Before long, though, she'll find Cheren in the vast area, and quietly like her usual, she addresses him. ]

H... Hello. I'm Hanako, the one you talked with earlier...

[No interruptions works well for him, as well as the whole her actually paying attention part. Usually when he gives out information like this, people--namely Hilda and Bianca and others--don't seem to pay him too much attention. Cheren likes to pretend it's because they're eager to discover it on their own, not because he's telling them about things they already know.]

What is exactly a Contest, and how is it different than battles?

[ Quietly, with a bit of intimidation in her voice- it's like in her school actually, except she never dared asking her teacher questions even if she happens not to know something. That's a small progress. ]

[That sort of behavior isn't something Cheren understands well. He's used to speaking what's on his mind and stating things outright in nearly all situations, no matter who he's talking to. Of course, there were exceptions--people like the parents of friends or important Champions, but in general, that was what he did, hence why how quietly Hanako asked that question made him raise an eyebrow in slight bewilderment. Well, that and battling is clearly more fun than contests. Not that he'll comment on that, though, since information is more important than criticism.]

Contests aren't something we have much of in the region I'm from--I've heard it's mostly Sinnoh and Hoenn that have them. But regardless, contests involve conditioning your Pokemon so that it excels in a certain area: cool, tough, cute, smart, or beauty. The contest itself usually has a round where you can dress-up your Pokemon, and a round where you can have them show off the moves they've learned to the judges.

[ Unlike him, Hanako thinks Contests are a pretty neat idea that don't involve fighting or getting your Pokemon hurt. She would like to give it a try- but as she realizes then, this is Vatheon and not one of the places Cheren mentioned. Besides, if this was a curse... Frillish might be gone by the time it's over. :c Oh no. ]

It looks interesting... but Contests are not held here, right? I would have liked to give it a try.

[ Then again she doesn't even know whichever moves Frillish has. ]

I'm no expert on them, but I guess if we can find enough people, we can have a contest. [even if he would rather be the judge, he'd compete if it's necessary. He'd just... be awkward about everything and no good at contest matters.]

There's also other things similar to contests that people do with their Pokemon, too. In Unova, where I'm from, there's the Pokemon Musical, which involves dressing Pokemon up and letting them perform on stage. I've also heard of the Pokeathlon in the Johto region, which is a sort of sporting event you do with your Pokemon.

[ Hanako gives Frillish a quick glance. It doesn't seem to be that much inclined to perform in a musical, much less than she is. ]

How do I know what my... Pokemon can do?

Well, that depends on what you're referring to. If you mean which moves it has, my Pokedex can tell you that. For contest condition and the Pokeathlon endurance data, my Pokedex isn't calibrated to show that kind of data.

Ah- I meant, the moves it has. Sorry I didn't clarify... [ More fidgetting, oh gosh. ]

Right. Well, here, you can check for yourself. [He hands his Pokedex to Hanako, already on the correct setting. Pokedexes can totally do this, okay, we can just pretend.]

Point it at Frillish, and it will tell you the level, nature, stats, and moveset he has.

[ She's a little tense as she handles the Pokedex carefully... it's like a cellphone, sort of. It shouldn't be hard to use.

Doing as he says, she points it to the Frillish- and she hears the robotic voice coming from it. Obviously it startles her. ]

Ah... ! [ She needs to get used to this, okok ]

[well okay, he can understand that one. Maybe she wasn't expecting it to talk, thinking it would just display text or something. Regardless, he leans over to point out things on the display screen of the Pokedex.]

This is Frillish's current level, and over here are the four moves he currently knows.

Well, she wouldn't be capable to follow the voice anyway, so she looks straight at the screen and reads out loud. ]

Level 10... Bubble, Water Sport, Absorb and Night Shade...?

[Cheren nods in response; that was indeed what the Pokedex said, and it was appropriate for a Frillish of that level.]

Right. Now, the Pokedex will also let you examine the moves further by providing short explanations of what they do, but it's not entirely necessary to look at those.
