Lesson One | Just Practicing

Who: Terra and KH Cast?
Where: Starting in the 'island'/'Somarium', will eventually be... idk, wherever the hell he's led for the party.
When: 4/24, starting a little after noon, lasting until the evening.
What: Terra's trying his hardest to ignore the fact that he's now twenty.
Status: Open-ish?

[It really was just Terra's luck that Ven would announce to everyone in their new 'home' that his birthday was approaching. He had never really been overly fond of celebrating the day, as he'd never felt any different on that day than he did on any other. Usually, birthdays only meant something embarrassing being recorded by Master Eraqus, dinner with his 'family', and a few presents (either handmade or otherwise). The idea that he was going to be thrown a party wasn't what was throwing him off.

It was the possibility of there being at least ten people there for what is usually a four-person event. Four always felt like too much; how much would ten feel like?

Eager to just go about his business and, as usual, treat his birthday as he would any other day of the year, the Keybearer made his way to the elevator that lead to the surface, intending to use the beaches as an improvised training ground.

Someone really should've told him that the whole island had been transformed. It made for a small shock, but not an unwelcome one, as it meant he could spend his time exploring this new space and find a nice, open place to go through a few drills.

Or practice a few of the more wide area affecting spells. Which was at least half of them.

Terra smirks slightly; with no one around to get hurt, he could just cut loose. This? Was going to be fun.]

[ The new town that's sprung up topside is a nice surprise to a girl who's just gone up for a breath of salty sea air. It doesn't smell or look like home anymore; but that's okay. This place is new, and somewhere she can explore for herself.

Which is what she's doing, walking along and minding her own business when she turns a corner and stumbles upon the sight of one of the strangers Riku seems to know practicing magic of all things.

She watches in silence, wondering if observation is a greater teacher than receiving actual instruction. ]

[It's not just magic that Terra is practicing, though that's what he's concentrating on at the moment. There are a few logs around the area that have been stood up to serve as make-shift training dummies/targets. Some look singed, others covered in ice--

And one of them just got hit by what looked like a Dark Firaga. The spell was fired before Kairi hit the sensing range, and the presence of a Light as pure as hers makes him stiffen in surprise and slight panic. Did Aqua or Ven see him use that spell--

He relaxes when he sees the unfamiliar red-head. But that Light... one of the seven?

Well. At least he can relax a little. It's likely she was just a spectator.] Can I help you with something?

[ That strong surge of darkness is unmistakable; just like Riku in the Castle That Never Was when he'd saved her from Saix. Her eyes are wide with deja vu for a full minute before she can drag herself up from the rather ungraceful fallen-on-her-butt position that blast had knocked her back into and has the presence of mind to appear both sheepish and apologetic. ]

Sorry, guess I should've said something first. I was just watching.

[ She casts her gaze about at the singed and frozen logs, and then back at him. ]

You're a friend of Riku or Mickey. Right?

[Just going to nod in confirmation here.] Riku more than Mickey. I'm Terra.

[The question just confirms his own guess.'She knows them?' Definitely from back 'home', then. Which makes this girl one of the seven Princesses of Heart.

Well, now's as good a time as any to look a little sheepish.] If I'd known I was going to have an audience, I wouldn't have used some of those spells.

[Mega Flare or Quake could seriously hurt someone if they got caught in it by accident. Good thing he hadn't worked up to casting those yet.]

[Peace and quiet? In Vatheon? Nice try. Someone whistles after some very good spells hit their targets.]

[You can't blame a guy for trying, right? Though the sound of the whistle and Mickey's voice are enough to draw his attention. A large number of the make-shift targets he had set up around him were covered in a layer of ice, the only sign he had used the Deep Freeze spell.

Only one of those targets has thawed somewhat, the result of a Crawling Fire. The target was still smoking slightly, courtesy of the slow-burning flame spell.

At least the praise from someone he's guessing is a Master is enough to make Terra straighten a little bit from the praise, a small smile forming on his face.] Thanks. I'm not as good as Aqua with magic, but I know enough to get by.

[A pause, as he considers possibly asking for advice or for a few pointers. He has no idea what Yen Sid could've known, and therefore could've taught his pupil. And having a trained eye observing not just his casting, but possibly any more drills he runs could be helpful with pointing out flaws that need to be corrected.]

Ya looked pretty good! I think 'get by' is a lot more than yer givin' credit for.

[His eyes go to the targets, nodding at some of them, most likely able to see some small mistakes but not commenting on them just yet. It's not his place, and he doesn't want to intrude too much.]

This how yer gunna celebrate the big birthday?

[So instead have some friendly conversation, so he doesn't have to talk about just why he won't be as good as Aqua. Stupid traumatic past.]

[He actually laughs a little, unable to keep a grin off his face. He's feeling a little better already.] Well, fighting the Unversed gave me plenty of reason to get better. I wasn't this good when Aqua and I took our Mark of Mastery Exams.

[But compared to her? No, still a long way to go. She's always been the natural with magic.

At the 'birthday' question, his eyes widen in surprise before he looks away, a sheepish expression forming on his face as he scratches the back of his head.] I... kind of figured I should get away for a while. That way, Aqua and Ven could set up down below without me getting in the way.

[And he really didn't want to watch them run around making a huge deal like they did every year. ... Well. Since he's said why he's up here...] Anything need improvement?

[It never hurts to get a second opinion. And since Master Eraqus isn't here to point out his mistakes and help him fix the flaws... why not another Master?]

[Caden approached the group with trepidation. He had been invited, sure, and helped put it together, but it was odd... he kept feeling like he was supposed to belong here and he just didn't. Ven he felt close to and Riku as well, but a party like this wasn't something he'd ever been a part of.

All the same, he started walking - looking for Ven all the while and reminding himself not to force anything on this person who didn't really know him that well.]

[ It's hardly a party when the guest of honor is trying to get out of actually attending it. Thus why Ven's on the scene to drag his buddy back to the apartment for plenty of Aqua's food and presents. Before he accidentally becomes one of Terra's targets, though, he notices another figure not far away watching him train.

Curious, Ven walks over, and smiles when he gets a good look at who it is. ]

Hey! I'm glad you made it.

[ Retrieving Terra can wait a few more minutes. ]

[A smile crossed his face at Ven's approach. So much for that resolution.]

Wouldn't miss it.

[Caden looked around, then back to Ventus.] It turned out pretty well, didn't it? Where is Terra anyway? I know you mentioned him before, but I don't think I met him... ever.

[ Ven is quite determined to get this friendship on track. Good thing it shouldn't take too much effort. His smile morphs into a grin, and he nods at the figure flinging high-level magic at the logs. ]

That's him over there, trying to avoid his own party.

[ And he feels no guilt for teasing the guy about getting old. He really needs to lighten up. Geeze. ]

We'll have to fix that! He's a really good friend to have.

[Caden watched Terra for a moment in awe.]

He's really powerful, isn't he?

[The two were connected in Caden's mind, as twisted as that was.]

[ He nods, leaning against a slightly frozen, damp log. The remnants of a Deep Freeze spell. ]

He's the strongest of the three of us physically. Aqua's the best with magic.

Terra and I always needed work in that department, compared to her.

[ Glancing back over at his friend proudly. ]

Looks like he's gotten a lot stronger.

But how did he...

[ Caden was actually impressed. Really impressed.]

You only just made the training area, didn't you? What else did he do?

Not this one.

[ The scenery up here is completely different. No... this isn't where they'd built the apparatus. All of this Terra had done himself. ]

Looks like he made some targets and started practicing his magic.

That looks like a Deep Freeze over there-- [ He points to the nearest bunch of standing logs, still covered in a thin veil of ice. ]

The rest seem burnt. Guess he's really focusing on his fire magic.

[ Which means nabbing the birthday boy without getting hit might be tricky. ]

Oh. I thought maybe he did something differently. That's too bad.

[There's only so much practicing you can do when you literally don't know anything, and what you did try got you stuck in the body of a guy you killed. Not that encouraging to try again.]

Wait, what's Deep Freeze?

Not aside from some good practice.

[ Yikes. Maybe they can talk about this sometime and see what ven can do to help? ]

It's an ice spell that freezes things in blocks of ice.

[ His lips twitch a little. ] I remember Aqua using it on him once awhile back.

I forget what he did, but it must've been something.

I went into her room without knocking again. [The sound of Terra's voice is amused, and loud enough to catch the attention of the two hiding/watching him practice from a safe distance, and is enough of an indicator that he not only knows that Ven and Caden are there, but he's known for some time.

It took all of his self-control not to surprise Ven with a spell, instead of just a quick comment, but he figured that wouldn't go over so well.

The Keybearer walks over to where the two teens are hiding, and cracks a small smirk.] Let me guess; you and Aqua are finished setting up?

[His attention then shifts to Caden, and his head tilts to the side as his arms cross. The smirk disappears, and friendly curiosity is left on his face.] Who's your friend, Ven?

[ Ven's eyes go wide, and he whirls in surprise to find himself caught. But he's quick to look disbelieving at his buddy's words, and actually facepalms. ]

You've gotta be kidding me! I thought you'd learned after the time before that.

[ Never evereverever intrude on a girl while she's in her room. It's an unspoken, unwritten rule written in the invisible code of guy/girl rules that exists somewhere. He looks up after he's done, and grins a bit. ]

We've been done for awhile. And this is Caden. We were friends when I was here before.

Caden, this is Terra. You said you haven't met him before, right? Now we're fixing that.

[ He stands back, letting the two make their intros. ]

[Caden stares, very confused. Somewhere in his mess of a memories, he recognized this guy - not his name, but the way his brunet hair stuck up like that.]

I... don't think we have, anyway. I've changed a lot in a year, so sometimes it's hard to keep track.

[Still, he stuck out his hand.] It's nice to meet you, though, Terra.

In my defense, she left her door open a little. [Which was generally code for 'it's safe to go in without knocking, just announce your presence first.' Which he had. Not his fault.

It's a tad hard to tell if the red on his face is from all the spell casting or from remembering that particular Deep Freeze incident. But, that's another story.

Attention going back to Caden now, the curiosity coming through again. A second passes, before he takes the offered hand and shakes it.] It's nice to meet you too, Caden.

If you know Riku? Then that might be why. [No context whatsoever, but it's true anyway.]

I was just saying how I need to train some more and didn't know if you had any pointers, since I don't even know what half this stuff is that you're doing.

[Without context, he's going to leave that particular comment alone. He 'hmm's, looking a touch thoughtful.] Not a lot of people do; the higher-level spells can only be discovered by mixing other spells together and figuring out how compatible the magics are.

[The thoughtful look turns slightly scrutinizing as he takes a quick 'glance' at Caden's Heart-- and he has to hide the surprise at how similar it is to Riku's.

'Same kind of potential... there's more Darkness there, but... that isn't a bad thing.'] I have a student already, but I haven't begun teaching him yet. I don't think he'd mind a training partner.

[Not a very subtle offer, but it's on the table.]

[He can feel those glances, trying to sort out what his Heart looks like, and it's a little unnerving]. Let me try what you're saying on my own first. I'd hate to be a burden. Maybe if that doesn't work out...
