When: March 3rd, not long after Zelda spoke with Izaya

Zelda had grown angry again on her way home from the park. Sure, she didn't think that Izaya was a monster, but she also didn't think that he was necessarily a good person. Not anymore, at least. Oh, she would accept him if Shizuo seemed happy and if he never did something like that to Sola again, but she didn't like it. The way everything had fallen into place for him was absolutely maddening and it took a great deal of her willpower to not attempt to throw it all into chaos.

He deserved it, but Shizuo didn't. She sighed heavily as she got close to her house, wondering if Zelos was up yet.

The song sounded ridiculously hideous with both of them singing something different, but Zelda didn't mind. She waited for them to finish before attempting to blow out the candles, looking mildly confused when they lit themselves again. She tried again, getting the same results.

And then she laughed.

"Ahh, you remembered! Well, I can still handle it!"

She flicked her wrist, calling on a light mist to put the candles out, looking pleased with herself.

Shizuo laughed too.

"Hey, that's cheating," he said when she used magic to put it out, still smiling. This was nice. It almost felt as though things were back to normal. He started cutting the cake, giving Zelda the first piece, and then putting pieces on his and Zelos' plates as well.

"Haha, I haven't seen trick candles in forever! Nice touch."

Zelos flicked the light back on before sitting at the table and sliding his little wrapped gift towards Zelda. "You can open it after cake, if you want."

"I am patient when necessary, but I see no reason to wait," she scoffed, taking up the gift.

Of course Zelda was one of those people that carefully unwraps a gift and doesn't tear the paper even once. Did anyone ever expect otherwise? The process took her a couple minutes. She looked up at Zelos curiously when she saw what appeared to be a handmade book inside, opening it up.

And there was her name, written out in Japanese, Aselian and Hylian. She smiled up at Zelos gently.

"Thank you. Both of you."

Zelda took that moment to start in on the cake rather than embarrass herself in front of them by getting weepy.

Shizuo was glad that Zelda seemed happy, and that everything had managed to work out - well, at least more so than it had been - before her birthday. Timing-wise, it could have been a lot worse. He, too, started on eating his cake, quietly.

Zelos dug in, though with small bites due to his throat not being completely recovered yet. It was kind of nice; a quiet little party for Zelda with her friends. He was used to big soirees with hors d'oeuvres and every noble in the city showering him with meaningless gifts and plastic smiles on his birthdays, which he usually would counteract with a more private party in his bedroom later (something which he was sure Zelda did not want to do).

He decided the next birthday he had back on Aselia would be like this. A cake (which he'd coerce Regal into making because damn that man can cook) and his friends and that's it.

"This cake is great, where'd you get it?"

"It is, it's really good!" Zelda didn't have much to say between bites. It had been awhile since she had indulged in sweets (considering the situation, that was not a surprise) and that probably made it taste even better.

The company didn't hurt, either.

"That bakery in the middle district. I had it custom made." Shizuo loved sweets and therefore knew exactly what made a cake delicious. He had gone in with the request.

"I'm glad you both like it."

"We should get one for every day of the week. 'Oh it's Saturday, let's have cake!'" He chuckled at his own joke, aware that it was pretty stupid. Maybe his brain hadn't quite recovered from the fever yet.

"So are you moving back in here or with your guy?" There was no judgement in Zelos's tone, just an honest question. If Shizuo wanted to go off and be gay that's fine anyway; more hunnies for Zelos.

That was awkward. Zelda simply takes a long drink, allowing Shizuo to answer the question.

Cake every day didn't sound like a stupid idea to Shizuo. He really liked sweets, as unhealthy as it was to eat them for every meal. He might have voiced some agreement, but then Zelos asked that question.

"I'm moving back into the apartment I used to live in," he replied quietly. Because it was safer for him to keep his distance from Zelda, for now, and it seemed too soon to move in with Izaya. Not that he had asked. Not to mention the fact that he lived with kids. One of whom he convinced to jump from a building.

Yeah - awkward. And uncomfortable.

Um. Whoops. Zelos totally hadn't intended for it to get quite that awkward that fast.

"Well that's fine. A man's gotta have his space, right?" Having finished his cake, Zelos rose from the table. "Anyone else done? I can take in the dishes."

Hopefully that smoothed things over a little, at least.

"Ah, yes, I have finished this piece," Zelda said, offering her plate to Zelos. It was awkward, but no more so than it had been earlier. She smiled at Shizuo.

"It is probably better this way with you in a serious relationship. As you said earlier, the 'no hunnies' rule can make that difficult!" The princess is nothing if not fair. Izaya counted as a hunny now, even if he was another man.

He especially counted because he was Izaya and she wasn't sure she wanted to see him again anytime soon.

"I'm done too, thanks." Shizuo passed his plate.

He gave Zelda a small, somewhat forced smile. "Yeah, that's true." He preferred not to talk about Izaya with Zelda, and vice versa, but of course that wasn't something he could avoid. Zelda was nothing but nice about the topic, but that didn't mean it was comfortable for Shizuo. They both knew the reasons behind Izaya's actions. After all, Shizuo had warned her.

After collecting all the empty plates, Zelos skedattled into the kitchen to wash them and get out of the line of fire for awkward, despite the fact that he had wrought it in the first place. Soon the sounds of the running faucet and clatter of plates permeated the kitchen, blessedly drowning out the silent flailing in the other room.

Zelda wasn't about to let mention of Izaya bring down the night, so she perked up, looking towards Shizuo. "Well! Cake for every day of the week sounds a little silly, but maybe we could try something once a week? What would you think of that, Shizuo?"

She was fairly certain that he would like the idea. The bodyguard liked sweets even more than she did, after all!

It was true. Shizuo preferred sweets over anything healthy, and cake once a week sounded good. Of course, he planned on keeping his distance from Zelda for a while, which would prevent him from actually participating in something like that, but he didn't need to bring her birthday down by saying that. So he nodded, with a smile. "I think that sounds good. We could try different kinds."

Zelos peeked out of the kitchen at that, a wide smile on his face. "Like a cake club? That is the best idea ever! I'll even make the first one~"

What's with that chipper attitude? Looks like the awkward can even get to Zelos.

"Would you? It's really not fair how good of a cook you are, so I'll look forward to it!"

She meant it, too. Zelos seemed to be good at everything he decided to touch. She didn't dislike him for it, but when it came to cooking... she was a little envious. It was something she wanted to learn to be better at. At least she hadn't failed miserably at it yet.

"What kind?" he asked. Not that he'd be opposed to any kind of cake. He liked nearly every variety. He was curious, though.

"Well, this was a white cake so maybe something chocolate based, like a mousse cake. Maybe with fondant or almond shavings." He rubs his chin, thinking of possibilities for his delicious creation.

"Well! The Great Zelos Wilder certainly doesn't do things half-hearted, does he?" Zelda was amused. Maybe it would be like Valentine's? That had been entertaining. And she actually hadn't minded the entire house smelling like chocolate once she adjusted to it. Chocolate is a good smell.

"That sounds really good." He hadn't expected otherwise.

He was really going to miss living with them. It may have been short-lived, but moments like these almost felt...familial.

"Then I expect you to come by next weekend for a bite! I'll totally cry if you don't~"

That's right, Zelos is onto you Shizuo. The mopey face, the hunched posture... the Chosen knows what someone making an uncomfortable - and in this case, unnecessary - sacrifice looks like. Surely just a visit and some cake once a week isn't going to hurt anything, no matter what it was that Shizuo was hiding.

"Oh goddesses, please don't make him cry," Zelda moaned dramatically. It wasn't as if Zelos had ever cried for real in front of her, but he had certainly whined frequently enough. No, all the crying had been done by her so far. It didn't mean that she wouldn't tease him about it a bit.

"I don't know if I can take it!"
