Karkat Vantas: interior designer
Who: Karkat (
bethehugejerk) and Eridan (
unconchonable)
When: Backdated to August 6, during the body swap curse.
Where: Their hive.
Style: Action
Status: Closed
[Karkat would have liked to gone home earlier. He would have, if he could! The trouble was a little thing called asymmetry and how it deeply offended whatever genes spawned the obsession with order in the body he currently inhabited. In short, going outside had seemed a pretty awful prospect, with how disorganized everything is.]
[But it's also been a rough night. You know how it goes - you run into the douchebag who vivisected your then-current moirail, his soul is a blight on reality, you fight, you tap into mystery powers you don't know your body has and mind control him into, well, something less crazy. No big deal.]
[Well, okay, yes it was, and he'd talked some after to get things settled and known, but all that is kind of past him. Reason being, with thoughts of the fight whirring in his head, he was finally able to slink on back to the hive. The asymmetry of the city layout was still awful, of course, but the mental distraction at least kept him from panicking about it.]
[Once he gets home, though, it's not anything as normal as seeking Eridan out that might alert him to his return. Instead it's the noises, thumps and dragging, things shifting, coming from downstairs.]
[DARE YOU INVESTIGATE??? y/n]

[Cautiously, he descends them, peering down to try and see what all the ruckus is an--]
Hey! What the fuck do you think you're doin'?
no subject
[Karkat doesn't even look up when Eridan calls out to him. It's probably a good thing that he's seen his current body by now, else he think this was a home invasion. But really, stopping is out of the question. It would leave the couch he's moving at an awkward, off-center position, and he's put up with enough asymmetry and disorder for one day that he will not allow even this.]
I'm fixing the hive. Is your hair combed? It better be even!
[This said as he nudges the couch to the precise center position along one wall.]
Using this account for icons sob
[He can't help but stare in disbelief as Kidkat moves the couch to where it SHOULDN'T BE! It takes only a moment of gawking before Eridan rushes over and places his robotic hands on the arm rest, pulling it out of whatever centered position it was just in.]
Fuck that! Our liwin' block is FINE how it IS. So leawe it fuckin' be! Also, yes my hair is combed, idiot, but that doesn't matter right now.
no subject
[Karkat is fine to let Eridan storm in, and he peers, squinting, at his hair as he does. The moment fine changes to 'dear god no' is when he starts to pull on the couch.]
YOU GIBBERING FUCKNUGGET, I HAD IT POSITIONED PERFECTLY!
[He seizes back onto it, pulling the opposite way with surprising strength for a seemingly human teenager.]
It isn't fine and it's not going to be until everything is aligned where it should be. Keep your robotic snatchmittens off! Go back to your block if you're going to be such an ass about it; I'll get there eventually.
[Motherfucking bulgesucking hellfire goddamn. Symmetry is precise, and just like that he has to figure out the right spot. Not too far left or right, and god forbid the back not line up parallel to the wall.]
Did it not occur to you to be glad I'm back home, finally? Obviously gratitude for my furniture arrangement is out the window, where it lies a bloody, ragged corpse on the lawnring. You're welcome, you ungrateful shitheel.
no subject
[That certainly is more of a pull than he was expecting, but he doesn't give up on his quest! His quest to get this couch back where it belongs!]
What makes you think I ain't glad you're back? I just ain't all too grateful towards this load a shit you're doin'! I liked the couch where it was, we put it there, remember? We newer had a issue before, and it ISN'T A FUCKIN' ISSUE NOW!
[And with that little bit of a shout, he yanks as hard as Sufferer's body can against Karkat's own pulling. Eridan will not be stopped, he has the position of their furniture to defend!]
So cut it the fuck out you addlebrained idiot!
thunderbird needs to stop not alerting me when I get emails
Because, shitstain, you aren't letting me fix it! It's not symmetrical and it needs to be!
[He growls, crouching down to gain better advantage of his center of gravity, then tries to pull again.]
I have had a fucking ridiculous night, and I did not bear the horrors of disorganized trees and city planning to be stopped from basic furniture rearrangement in my own hive!
Rude thunderbird ruuuude
[Oh no you don't, he's going to use the same strategy and push with his legs as he pulls.]
How about we stop this whole fuckin' retarded thing and you tell me about this ridiculous night instead! Because I can be at this all night, Kar, amazin' how much you can fuckin' pull when your hands are robotic!
IT KEEPS HAPPENING. also Karkat is so dumb right now fvsdkj
[Eridan gets his way then, if only for his choice of words. Karkat's hold loosens almost as soon as his current hair is mentioned.]
Oh god.
[He clutches at his head, hands curling through the mismatched strands as he sinks fully onto his knees.]
I can't even escape it in this body itself! It's not dye; it's just like this, all stripes on one side and not the other. Oh fuck.
[Argument forgotten, now he just looks up at what would normally be his ancestor, absolute self-disappointment etched across his face.]
What am I supposed to do? I set right the chaos in a soul, I try to make the furniture sit in proper position, but here I'm stuck with this joke of a hairstyle attached to my skull. Who the hell am I to go dictating order when this body doesn't even conform to symmetry?
Karkat pls
[Honestly thats about the most intelligent thing Eridan can think of to say as he watches Kidkat sink to his knees in a display that's as painful to watch as it is pitiful. Perhaps if Karkat were himself it would pull at Eridan's heartstrings a little more, and it's not that it's not, but seeing someone who isn't his not boyfriend act in such a fashion just isn't as striking as the real deal.]
Kar, calm the fuck down. It's just hair.
[For now, he abandons the couch, approaching Karkat cautiously, before trying to lay a gentle, however robotic, hand on his shoulder.]
Chill out, alright?
no subject
[Despite the comforting intent, what Eridan gets is a scowl. He allows the hand, though.]
It's not just hair, and I wouldn't expect you to get it when you won't let me fix the furniture either. I am hardwired for symmetry, Eridan! Something about this neurotic douchebag death god's genetics makes me crave it more than you crave tight, striped pants, and yet I'm stuck with hair that defies that order.
no subject
[Now he almost feels bad.]
Can't you just... I dunno, distract yourself from it all? I mean I GET hawin' urges and needs for things that are otherwise petty or dumb to other people, but there has got to be somethin' you can do to stop yourself from goin' shithiwe ower the lack a order in the uniwerse.
...It sucks seein' you like this, ewen if you don't exactly look like... y'know, you.

It took beating up Stein and it being night time for me to be able to go outside, much less make it home. Kid's had his whole life to get used to this; I'm going to have a week once this is done and over with, which is sure as hell isn't yet.
[But he stands, finally, if only so he can start repositioning the couch again.]
no subject
... Beatin' up... Stein?
[And it is at that point that Eridan just gawks at Karkat as if he said the most unbelievable thing to ever be said in the history of shit being said.]
no subject
[Karkat pauses, then resumes adjusting the couch.]
Guess I should have said that first.
But yeah, he was at the villa and there was something way fucking wrong with his soul, like abomination on reality level unless Kid's general weirdness was blowing it out of proportion, but you can't tell me that asshat didn't deserve it on his own. And he was acting weird besides? But whatever, we fought, I beat him up, a thing happened with Kid's powers, and now he's not such an entity of chaos and disorder.

[Oh. Those are arms. Those are definitely arms, and they are hugging him. Karkat doesn't tense up, but he does freeze; he'll have the couch right with another minuscule nudge that can wait for the moment.]
Uh.
[Of course he remembers. The memories came up when he saw Stein, and in the course of the fight. He knows how angry and outraged he was back when he found out Eridan was captured - at Stein, and at himself for not knowing until Lea found him by chance. He knows, now that he thinks about it, especially now that he feels this gesture, that it must mean a lot to Eridan.]
[He's not exactly sure what to think, but he doesn't push him away. He pats a hand to his arm and lets him stay as long as he needs.]
no subject
Sorry.
[His body reacted faster than his mind, really, so he didn't consider how odd that probably is for Karkat, but he couldn't help it. So here he stands a little awkwardly, still looking at Karkat in absolute fondness. It's torture, really, having all these feelings towards a troll and not the means to properly express it - or rather, not being allowed to.]
no subject
[It's not that the feelings aren't there, just that they're mixed up with the part of him that never looked at Eridan in that way. It's complicated! And kind of weird to feel, like not knowing which way is up. He simply gives the couch the last nudge, then stands. He doesn't quite look at him - different body or not.]
It's fine.
[He steps away and surveys the rest of the room.]
Will you let me reorganize the rest of this or are you going to pitch a fit again?
no subject
After what you did, I'd be a right fuckin' asshole to stop you.
[He can handle a week of their living block looking not like home if it makes Karkat feel better. It sucks, sure, but whatever, if it keeps Karkat around and keeps him from freaking out, he supposes he can deal.]
Do you need any help?
no subject
[Karkat breathes out a little sigh, and his expression eases.]
You know bilateral symmetry? Line stuff up along this central line.
[He motions, indicating an imaginary split down the room. The couch, of course, is centered on it at one end.]
If there's not a match for something, don't just put it on one side. And if it won't fit in the room otherwise, captchalogue it, and we can put it back when the week's over.
