08: Even superheroes get overworked

[Throughout the week, Nanaki is doing her best to fight of the crime in the city. She is actually a competent superhero, and can be seen chasing down villains as they rob banks and such.

Or sometimes she just pops out of mirrors nearby, because that's her power: traveling via reflective surfaces. So don't be too surprised if she comes tumbling out of a mirror near you. She didn't mean to intrude, honestly.]

Saturday

[All of that superhero work is tiring, and Nanaki has decided to take a day off. So on Saturday she can be found up on the island, wearing a swimsuit and just relaxing in a chair on the beach. There's also some other things nearby: a beach ball, some water toys, and stuff to build sandcastles with. If Nanaki is going to spend the day at the beach, she's going to do it right.]

[Davesprite is just walking on the beach in his human form, thinking. His eyes kind of wander around the beach aimlessly, and then he has to do a double-take when he sees someone familiar.

Oh. God. That is Nanaki in a swimsuit.

Shit. He can feel a blush, despite fighting it down. His train of thought has successfully gone off track and careens into a cement wall.]

[Nanaki actually didn't notice Davesprite at first, not until he ran into the cement wall. When she heard the noise from that, she sat up in her chair and looked over.]

--Davesprite? You okay?

[He rubs his face. This is so uncool he almost can't deal with it.]

Fine. Totally fine. I definitely meant to smack my face against a wall. Yep.

I'm sure you did.

[SHE DOESN'T BELEEV YOU]

Are you going to spend your whole day running into walls, or did you want to build a sandcastle with me?

[Not even Davesprite believes.]

Sure, why not? Better than breaking my face in.

[why did he say that he should flee before he makes even more of a fool of himself]

[Fleeing is not an option in this case.

Nanaki gets up out of her chair, and she grabs the bucket and little shovels and stuff.]

C'mon, let's go closer to the water.

[Davesprite will follow her closer to the water.]

So, how big of a castle do we wanna build? Manor, mansion, make little people to live in it until it gets washed away?

I think we could go mansion, but if it gets too big they tend to fall apart. I think we'll know when we reach that point.

[She kneels down near a spot of wet sand along the beach and starts filling the bucket with sand.]

We should do a moat too.

Sure. We can build the mansion, and then we make the moat.

[Davesprite starts filling the other bucket with sand.]

You enjoying your vacation from crime busting?

You have no idea. The crimes just don't stop! And on top of that it's harder for me to do, since my powers aren't attack powers.

[She turns the bucket over and makes the first shape of the sand castle.]

I'm starting to think I should just set up a mirror in the jail and throw the bad guys through that.

Won't they get stuck inside if you don't go with 'em?

[In his opinion, Nanaki's power is pretty awesome.]

At least you don't just transform into a crow. I only get one form and a crow is all I bet. Still, you could always pop outta a mirror and just surprise the hell out of the criminal when you beat him up.

[Rolling his eyes behind his shades, he sets down the second shape a few inches away from Nanaki's.]

Well yeah, I'd have to go too, but it would still be easier than beating them up. And turning into a crow is still pretty cool, flying is one of the best powers.

[She's filling up the bucket again to make a third base shape. Four towers get!]

Say, have you ever used your powers to mess with someone? Like, trick them into thinking you're a talking bird, or something.

Well, I'll admit the flying's pretty awesome, but mirror travel's awesome, too. When you're not going through one and arriving in one in the bathroom while I'm trying to brush my teeth.

[Davesprite erects the fourth tower with dramatic flourish.]

Did with you when I first met you. Haven't done it in a while, though, so I think I should change that.

Okay, that one time was totally an accident. I was half-asleep and trying to get to my own bathroom mirror, and I ended up at your by mistake.

[Thankfully he had just been brushing his teeth. He could have been showering or changing or something, which would have been way worse.]

I bet you could scare some villains. "I saw what you did last night," or something like that.

Was it really, Nanaki? Or were you trying to get a sneak peek at me while I'm at my most vulnerable?

[Totally teasing her as he makes the walls for the mansion on his side.]

Nevermore, nevermore, quote the raven.

[Whoops that sure is a handful of wet sand being 'accidentally' thrown at Davesprite.]

ANYWAY, it turned out alright. At least it happened more recently, rather than back when I was first learning how to use my powers.

[He makes sure it doesn't hit his face. Some gets in his hair, though, fuck.]

Yeah, then you might've fallen on me in my bedroom while I was sleeping. Way more scandalous.

Unless you sleep naked, that's not really scandalous.

[She's setting the bucket aside now, and she's grabbing handfuls of sand to pile up and shape into the top of the towers.]

What if I do? Or are you saying you know my sleeping habits already?

[Davesprite starts digging the moat. He's not so good at sand castle building, aside from putting sand in shaped buckets.]

What- no! Don't say it like that it makes it sound perverted!

[She's not a mirror stalker gdit

She turns a bit pink at the suggestion, though.]

[She isn't the only one on the beach. Gamzee is sitting crouched a little bit away from her, engaging in one of the oddest things you might see on a beach. The clown is just sitting there, arms loosely draped over his knees, staring out over the ocean as if he is quite enjoying the sight. Each time a wave rolls onto the beach however, he quickly shuffled back a few steps. Which would be reasonable --nobody likes getting wet after all!-- if he wasn't several meters away from the highest water line. And yet, he keeps repeating the odd behaviour: shuffling forward when the water recedes, chill and watch the water, then quickly shuffle backwards when a new wave rolls in.

It... it sure is something, that's for sure.]

[Nanaki watches this for about five minutes before she finally decides to find out what's going on.

She gets out of her chair and walks over to where Gamzee is, crouching down near him.]

What's wrong?

[Gamzee startles a little. He had been so caught up just staring at the ocean, he hadn't gotten the notion on to anyone approaching until she was right next to him. He glances up at her, giving her a dopey grin then.]

Ain't nothing all the matter with me, sis.

[Sure is an incoming wave.]

Fuck, gimme a sec.

[He shuffled backwards again as if he is physically repelled by the water.]

How come you're running away from the water?

[She stays where she is, and the water doesn't get anywhere near her.]

[He looks up at her.]

Sea's a dangerous motherfucker, sister, ain't nobody what got to ever imparting that knowing on you?

[Gamzee learned the hard way, seriously.]

[Lab is just enjoying a nice cup of tea in the comfort of his cottage when she pops out of a mirror in his sitting room!]

Oh, hello! You're just in time for tea!

Oh!

[She glances around the room a few times before letting her sight fall back on Labrador.]

...I'm guessing this isn't the library.

[Still, tea does sound nice, and at least Labrador isn't throwing things at her.]

[He laughs] I'm afraid you must have taken a round turn somewhere, Miss.

Would you like some cake with your tea? I just baked a chocolate cake.

[Saix, despite occasionally sort of faking it, is still new at this 'being an actual normal person' deal. So when a strange girl suddenly leaps out from the mirror in his bedroom, he goes with the first instinct he knows.]

[It involves throwing a dresser at her.]

[...Listen, it's how he was taught to deal with intruders. Attack first, question the corpse later.]

[Fortunately Nanaki has had a lot of practice with mirrors, so she's able to duck back into the mirror and out of harm's way.

A moment later she sticks her head back out the mirror to yell at Saix.]

Just what was that for?!

[Oh. It's a human. Or at least human shaped.]

You intruded.

Well excuuuuuse me, I didn't know mirror-jumping in a public place was a crime!

[Sorry Saix, your mirror just happened to be close to the location she was aiming for.]

I actually think it might be.

[Maybe. Humans have a lot of weird rules, so it's not unthinkable. He's pretty sure there's something about owning an elephant...]
