[OPEN] Soldier On--
Who: Serph and YOU
Where: The Park
When: November 14th, afternoon
Style: [brackets] preferred, but I can adjust
Status: WIDE OPEN
[It's been quite some time since Sera's departure, and since then, there have been others -- both Tribe and friends -- who have left Vatheon and not returned. Serph doesn't know if they'll return. Maybe they will. Maybe they won't. In the end, the decision isn't in his hands.
Before, there hadn't been time for these departures to affect him.
Which is why he's in the park, kicking a hacky sack. Signless had taught him the game when he'd noticed Serph watching him, so many months ago. In some ways, this is an imitation of that time; while Serph's content to play on his own, he's more than happy to play with people passing by.
Will you join in?]

I'm interested in seeing your weapon in action.
[Is he right in assuming Hubert and Malik are closer than acquaintances, at least?]
Would you be up for a spar?
no subject
Serph's intuition is correct. Hubert and Malik fought alongside each other for quite a while. However, they were brought up in two very different countries and their fighting techniques are significantly different.]
Sure.
[Malik smiles as he takes his bladerang from his back and readies it in his hand.]
no subject
Feel free to use magic. My demon is resilient.
[By most standards, anyway. But with that said, he completes the transformation -- his demon is just over a foot taller than his human form -- and goes straight for a punch aimed at Malik's chest. Serph won't use any of his hidden blades in this spar; those blades are designed for killing.]
no subject
He positions his blade across his chest, using it to deflect the punch. He uses the inertia from the contact to help propel him backward as he leaps away to gain some distance between them.
Counting on Serph's agility to be spared any real injury, he throws his bladerang towards the demon. It spins almost of its own accord on a direct course towards him.]
no subject
Serph can sense Malik's backward leap with sharp clarity. But he cannot sense the movement of the bladerang as well. Serph makes a quick estimate of its arc. Now would be an ideal time to close the gap between Malik and himself while the weapon is out of his hands, but Serph's aware his increased size makes it difficult to get in unscathed.
Serph opts to step back -- he slightly underestimates the outside edge of the weapon's arc, leading it to cut shallowly into the unscaled part of his upper right arm -- and lets out a hiss. The only other warning Malik has is the rapid drop in temperature around him before an icicle bursts from the ground beneath him.]
And the fight continues a few days later! Sorry!
The sudden change in temperature gives him some warning, just enough to prevent being impaled. His focus for the spell he had been readying falls apart as dodges to the side. The icy protrusion comes close enough to pierce his pant leg and inflict a lengthy scratch along his calf. The cloth tears as he finishes his leap away, leaving a patch of green cloth on Serph's icicle.
The bleeding looks worse than the actual wound as he catches his returning blade. Wasting no time, he begins another spell. Red lengths of energy appear around Serph, coalescing into chains to bind him.]
No worries! I know you were busy the last few days
Serph ignores it with practised ease.
He's able to sense the energy of Malik's spell in much greater clarity than he could sense Malik's bladerang -- he's having some trouble pinpointing that weapon's current location -- so he strides forward in an attempt to both avoid the energy and to close the distance between Malik and himself; Malik has thus far demonstrated that he is more comfortable keeping a distance from his opponent. But Serph is caught in the spell, and finds his movements restricted.
Serph doesn't know how long the spell will last -- it seems foolhardy to wait it out -- but after observing the magic of others in Vatheon, whose magic are far less quickly released compared to his world's, perhaps breaking Malik's concentration will weaken the spell's hold on him. Serph's fingers are still able to move, and that's what's important. Opening the Divine Scroll in his mind, it takes a split second for his right hand's index finger to draw a circle with a line through it before closing the mental scroll. Though Malik wouldn't be able to see the drawing itself, he'd be able to see the results -- a fireworks-like bomb appearing out of thin air in front of him.
If Malik is familiar with Amaterasu or Chibiterasu's Celestial Brush Techniques, then he will recognise it as Cherry Bomb. Regardless, Serph's fingertip drips with black ink, not unlike the ink the two sun dogs use.]
no subject
Though completed, his Spectral Chain spell doesn't last forever. It fades, releasing Serph at just about the same time as the bomb explodes - sending sparks, fire, and smoke in all directions.
After the initial blast, a slightly soot covered bladerang slices through the pyrotechnic haze on a course for where Serph had just been bound.]
no subject
Serph closes the gap between Malik and himself quickly -- he can cover ground much faster with the extra height and power in this form -- and reaches to grab Malik. The smoky haze from the Cherry Bomb has little effect on Serph's ability to locate Malik; Serph can still sense his opponent's location clearly.
no subject
The bladerang reaches its intended location, now empty of Serph, and begins its return arc.]
no subject
The force of the impact itself is enough to stun Serph for a split second, but it won't occupy his attention for long; he'll try and prevent Malik from putting distance between them.]
no subject
Serph is fast and has been very effective in preventing Malik from getting the distance he needs in order to be most effective with his magic. He also noticed how quickly he seemed to react to magic and how Serph seemed to be less able to dodge his bladerang. His only chance is to recover his weapon. Without it - the only thing he has left are his fists.]
no subject
Serph can feel the weapon stuck between the plating on this back, and though he can't sense its shape properly, he has a good idea of where it is due to it restricting some of his movement. Reaching to yank the bladerang out with his left hand, Serph pulls it out and holds on to it tightly as he takes a step away from Malik. The cutting edge near the grip slices into his index finger, but Serph ignores it.]
Do you yield?
no subject
He decides to concede. It's only a friendly spar after all, though he is a little concerned over Serph's pincushion wounds.
He smiles a little and holds up a hand.]
I yield.
no subject
He holds out Malik's bladerang for him to take back.]
Are you alright?
[His gaze flickers to the wound on Malik's leg.]
no subject
I'll be fine. It looks worse than it is. It's just a scratch.
[He dusts himself off.]
But you though... [He looks over Serph.] not a visible mark. You're not kidding about being tough.
no subject
I was fortunate.
[If the bladerang had struck lower in his back, then there would definitely be a visible wound.]
Your weapon is difficult for me to detect.
no subject
It was impressive. Almost a little disturbing. [Malik isn't altogether comfortable with Serph's quirks, but their time spent together today has done much to change his mind. He smiles to show his good nature behind the comment.]
no subject
Magic in my world is quicker to release. It was a matter of life or death for us.
[So... it's not surprising he's learnt to trace magic quickly.]
Large projectile weapons don't exist in my world. Are they common?
[In Malik's world, that is.]
no subject
There aren't many who can wield a weapon like the bladerang. There are many more who simply fight with standard melee weapons, or more traditional projectile weapons like guns and tanks.
Quite a lot of people are able to use magic-assisted attacks. Those kinds of techniques are relatively quick to release as they are meant to enhance the weapon that's currently being used. For example, I can direct my weapon to change direction or do several different small magical effects almost instantly.
For those of us who can manipulate magic into more powerful effects, it takes more time - [He eyes Serph.] unfortunately.
no subject
Do you have spells outside the binding one? I'd like a demonstration of those and a magic-assisted attack.
[There may be a way to cut casting time, if Malik's magic functions on similar principles to his own.]
1/2
First, let me show you a magic assisted attack.
[He takes his bladerang in hand and throws it about twenty-five meters in front of them. It hangs there in the air spinning.
Malik moves his hand and the bladerang dives towards the ground. A large magical crack of energy appears at the site of contact and the bladerang appears to embeds itself in the ground. The crack opens slightly more and a rush of magical energy flies up and out from it, forming a temporary wall of energy. A second later the entire spell is gone and the bladerang is spinning back towards Malik's hand.]
2/2
Now for something a little more powerful.
[He closes his eyes and positions his hands in front of him. He beings his incantation.]
Wind, thou quickened dagger. No shield can repel thine unforeseen stab! Culling Flare!
[A large beam of light radiates down from the sky destroying anything in its path. It remains there for several seconds before dissipating.]
no subject
Instead he focuses on the second, obviously more powerful, spell. Last time Malik had cast a spell, there had been no words needed. At least, none that he could hear.]
Is speaking those words necessary?
no subject
When learning the spells, they're often taught with an incantation. It's more of a way to concentrate than anything else. As you get more comfortable and make the spell your own, most people change the wording to what suits them.
[It's a good way to show off.]
