After just two weeks in this place, Laharl is homesick. Not that he would ever use the word, but he misses his Netherworld--his castle, his coffin, his vassals (well, ordering them around)... He ought to be there right now, enjoying his newly cemented position.

Hitting the books wouldn't normally be on his list of options, but unfortunately there's no obvious leader here to beat up. Creating dimensional portals is something his gatekeeper does every day, surely an Overlord won't have any trouble learning it. The primary obstacle to this plan is the lack of a teacher or, as it turns out, any books he can find on the subject.

The pint-sized demon is in a foul mood as he exits the library. The bookshelves where he had been working barely survived (although he left a real mess), and he'd really like to destroy something or someone more worth his while.

If he seems to be looking for a fight, it's because he is.

[It doesn't matter how calm his tone. Laharl would be annoyed by anyone speaking to him right now.

He shoots the tattooed stranger a glare and keeps walking.]

Something which obviously wasn't there. What's it to you?

[Serph has no problems walking alongside this stranger, still as calm as ever.]

I work there as a librarian.

[Though that isn't all he does.]

I want to help.

[Good luck with that. The helping, that is. Laharl's strides are not hard to match.]

So it's your fault everything's ordered like that.

[Well, yes, in a way, so Serph nods.]

It's the order I've been given.

[It's not his library, so Serph isn't about to go rearrange the order of things. Not that he has any better way to categorise the books.]

Even if what you were searching for was not in the library, I may know someone who does.

[Libraries aren't supposed to be that orderly! You just shove the books onto the shelves and if there's something really important, it'll come when you call it.]

If you knew someone who had what I wanted, they'd be long gone.

[Laharl that doesn't answer his question at all! Serph tilts his head, not understanding.]

What do you mean?

I mean, what I want is to get the hell out of this place.

Is everyone here an idiot?

[Even in the face of an insult, Serph maintains the same calm demeanour. Tilting his head, he asks--]

Do you have something important to return to in your own world?

Of course I do! That world belongs to me. You think I'm going to settle for some little bubble?

[An entire world belonging to someone? There have been various people who have wished to lead the peoples of the world in the direction they desired -- himself, included -- but none could claim that the world was theirs.

Serph shakes his head. No, he doesn't expect this stranger to settle for the bubble.]

There are many here who also wish to return to their worlds. There are many who are searching for a way back.

[Maybe this guy should help them!!]

It sure doesn't seem like it. As far as I can tell, you all are just sitting on your asses.

[Serph isn't terribly bothered; it is partially true, after all. He can't fully dedicate himself to trying to figure out a way to his home world, and... well if he's honest, he's not particularly eager to return.]

Will you lend us your skills, then? It would be more productive than destroying the library.

[Laharl is taken aback by the question. As if he's some kind of bonus character to be recruited...!]

Don't be absurd. You're free to lend me your skills, but let's not forget who's in charge here.

[Hah. Serph tilts his head.]

And that would be...?

[It's not like he knows who you are, little man.]

[Laharl lifts his chin~~, as if that's going to bring him anywhere near Serph's height~~.]

Laharl the Terrible, Overlord of the Netherworld.

[If Laharl was hoping to impress Serph, the only reaction to his words are a nod of acknowledgement. And since it's only polite to return the favour...]

Serph.

[And, well, he supposes he should do what the head librarian wanted him to do in the first place...]

It would be appreciated if there wasn't a repeat of the bookshelf destruction.

[Serph, that is not the appropriate reaction. Laharl gives him a flat look and responds grumpily:]

And what if there was?

[Serph can deal with grump; when there's a perpetual frowny face living with him, it's hard not to get used to it. Property destruction isn't really a big deal to Serph, though, so he's unwilling to bring violence into the equation. Though the destruction has created more work for him, Serph doesn't think there'll actually be a repeat, given the circumstances.

Serph shrugs.]

I'll take up more of your time.

...that's it? I mess up your library and you'll follow me around like a dog.

[What kind of threat is that?]

I have little desire for fighting.

[Though he will fight, if necessary. He tilts his head, though. Perhaps he read Laharl's words incorrectly...?]

Is my company desirable?

[Laharl snorts.]

Like hell. Especially not if you're some kind of pacifist.

[Ha ha ha pacifist. That's actually pretty funny, and the corners of Serph's mouth curl up slightly in amusement.]

Then if there's no further bookshelf destruction, there will be less of my undesirable company.

[Except there totally will be more, but shhh.]

[What is so funny about that, Serph. If you don't want to fight, you are totally a pacifist and there is clearly something wrong with you.]

Well, you can go ahead and get lost now if that's all you've got to say.

[What a charming fellow. Serph nods. But before he leaves...]
