Hey, listen...

Characters: Dark Link and open to Ion, Izaya, and Laharl
Location: Izaya's Apartment
Time: Very early morning when the fairies start popping
Style: Prose preferred but any is fine - Would also prefer that this continue as a single scene, so responses should be in the same thread.
Status: Closed

Dark Link often dreamed of Hyrule. Specifically Kokiri Forest. It wasn't an odd thing to dream about one's own world, other than he had never really seen much of it. He'd been created in a shadowy realm and tossed into the Water Temple to do his master's bidding, but he'd been programmed with some knowledge of the world at large, what few memories Ganondorf could glean from his greatest foe. Dark Link didn't pretend to know how that worked, magic was beyond him, but he did know that he felt at home in the forest (despite never having seen it), that the Kokiri were like family (despite never having met them), and that he was supposed to have a fairy.

And that last part was true, at least here in Vatheon. He'd been granted a small, blue fairy, just like he was supposed to have. Just like Navi. He even called her that, talking to his silent companion regardless of the likelihood of receiving an answer. It was right to have the little blue glowball following him around, only proper. Nevermind that everyone else had a companion too, it was simply important for him to have one. It was part of what made him Link.

Only now, after having been awoken with a loud "pop!" and a shower of dust and dissolving wings, Dark Link was suddenly and inexplicably without his little companion.

A thin, desperate wail escaped him into the pre-dawn air of the shared apartment as he clutched the small pile of fairy dust, as if willing it whole again.

Ion started, Link's distress waking him far faster than the popping sound had. He looked up at his roommate a little blearily.

"Link? Link, what is it?"

Ion stared at the pile, then looked over his own shoulder. Sure enough, his fairy was gone as well. "Hold on just a moment. Let me see what's going on, alright? Don't panic."

The Fon Master took out his SFC and started browsing around. Sure enough, there were multiple posts about the suddenly dead fairies with no explanation or solution. When he's done he just looks back at Link hopelessly, wishing he could say something to make it better.

"I-I'm sorry, they're all gone. I don't know what to do..."

Izaya had been working out in the main foyer when he heard the commotion. All of his computer monitors were buzzing and at first, he seemed to ignore the noise entirely but then came along Link's low wail. Just as it ended, he heard his own explosive little pop and jerked around. His dark red little fairy had exploded over the side of his desk. For a moment, Izaya just stared at the remaining pile of its used-to-be body and then instantly left his desk.

He was opening the door to Ion and Link's room not a second later, strolling in.

"Are you guys all right?" he asked, removing his glasses to fold shut and tuck into his shirt. He glanced from Ion to Link and then back to Ion as though asking him what was wrong. Instead, he turned to Link, who seemed more traumatized and approached him.

"Link?" he asked, leaning over to look at the creature's face. He looked down and into his opened hand.

"Ah."

The pop had woken him up, suffice to say. Despite the prince was used to sleeping in through explosions and gunfire, somehow, there was something about the sudden pop of sparkle and possibly fairy guts that sent him jolt awake and crashing to the ground. The wail that came from Link had come right after. That crash and scramble off the ground would probably be the next thing his roomies heard followed by the eventual stomping to the door.

"Hey! What they hell's--" he began, about to break into one of his sudden near common outbursts when he caught sight of the gathered group. His features shifted from irate to curious as he approached the rest of them.

His attention shifted from Izaya to Link and the thing in his hands. "Huh. You too, huh?" the finally muttered, arms folding across his chest as one foot tapped in irritation.

Dark Link's panic was contagious. Ion bit his lip and hugged his fellow replica from behind to ground himself, careful to not disturb the faerie's remains.

"According to the network, this has happened to everyone. It's not an incident isolated to this apartment," he offered, looking up at Izaya and Laharl.

Same here

Izaya tried not to massage his temples. He forgot that he was truly living with practical children, really. Simply ones that could function on their owns if they had to. Yet he wasn't totally oblivious to how to play up the father roll. He'd done it with his sisters after all.

"Now, now," he said, raising his hands, "Let's calm down." He glanced at Laharl, giving him a bit of a stern look as if to warn Laharl to keep from saying anything too harsh. He wandered over to Link and scooped his hand under Link's hand cradling those delicate remains.

"Yeah, I figured," he replied to Ion, considering all of their fairies had spontaneously combusted at the same time. Granted it was kind of funny but Izaya knew better than to laugh in this situation. He leaned down in front of Link and looked into his hands.

"I don't know who did this- if it was anyone at all. A lot of mysterious things happen in Vatheon that can't be explained," he said quietly to Link, looking at his face carefully, seriously, "And I don't know why," he admitted with a shrug, "I don't know the biological structure of these fairies. Their life span could very well have been very limited. Maybe something in the atmosphere shifted that impacted their timely death. Maybe it's an omen to something about to happen. I don't know why. We might never find out. Or we might find out next week. There are times in life where certain things happen and we have no control over it," Izaya said and reached his other hand up to place it gently on Link's head.

"Are you okay, Link...? I know this isn't what you want to hear. Unfortunately, I don't have all of the answers. I try though. I'll even try to look into it for you. In the mean time, if you like, perhaps we can bury our fairies, hm? Have a proper funeral and all. Would that make you feel better?" he asked. He knew that when his sisters' fish died, that they felt so much better after they sent him off. Maybe Link wouldn't be so different.

The look was enough to silence him, though so he just chose to step closer to the little group with his arms folded across his chest as always. The fairies weren't exactly the most useful things in the world. Truth be told, the first time he'd come to the city, his own little dark purple mass had been a bit of a nuiscance due to the fact that he'd tried to swat it away time and again. The second time around, he paid it no mind and barely remembered it was there. Then this happened.

"Pretty obvious it's happening around the city." he finally muttered, glancing aside somewhat. Seeing people upset wasn't really his thing. There was a moment of awkwardness around him because a part of him said that delicacy was more in the agenda today. "These things don't really do much but I guess there's a reason they were hovering around all the time."

There was another pause as he approached Link, placing his hand on the other boy's shoulder in passing. "Look. The city's screwy enough that it pulls stuff like this all the time. Who knows. Maybe they'll be back someday. They kinda disappeared before but they came back." he sighed, patting Link's shoulder as he drew away and set past him to stare out the window. "So... don't beat yourself up too much about it."

Everything? That seemed like a bit of a stretch. Ion looked a little incredulous, but he tried to smile since Link was perking back up.

"I-I'm not sure she could bring them back from the dead... could she?"

If she could really bring things back to life, Ion wanted to have a talk with her too. It's not like he wanted to be dead in his own world, after all.

"Link," Izaya said, straightening up. "She doesn't know everything," he said, perhaps a bit too bluntly but it was true. She was a little more ignorant than Link might realize. Although in all fairness, he knew it was just the world she came from. That it wasn't even her fault for having something of a lack of knowledge.

"No, I don't think she could. I'm sorry Link but when most things are gone, they usually can't be replaced," Izaya said and looked at Laharl. He didn't know that the fairies had disappeared before. He had to talk to Laharl about that later, he was curious. "And Laharl's right. They might come back. Maybe not the same as before but.."

He didn't want Zelda to be plagued with people asking her to bring things back to life. That was just...

"Don't ask Zelda though, okay? Besides, hoping for the dead to come back to life is a pretty big question and it's only more devastating when you're told that they can't. Say, Link, have you ever experienced death before?"

Despite the fact that the prince was around for about three reentries, the first time was still the first time and it was quite a while back. At any rate, he didn't seem too concerned about it. Though he was quiet through the whole "asking about bringing the dead back to life" deal. Those were far more forbidden arts. The Netherworld had strict rules about the dead, considering what they dealt with. It just wasn't done. Spirits had to go through the usual cycle of birth-death-atonement-rebirth, after all. But did fairies turn into prinnies?

With a sigh, he glanced back over his shoulder at the rest of them. For once, he seemed deathly serious compared to his usual tone. "The dead don't come back, Link." he muttered before glancing off again. "They just don't, okay? And they're better off like that."

Ion nodded, his face growing serious as well. "I died before coming here. I'm quite certain of it. Someone from my world has confirmed my death, so I was not simply in a coma or anything like that. I'm not sure if it's advisable or not, but people can come back to life."

Of course, there was a small part of Ion that wasn't sure that he and Link were people at all. Maybe it was easy to bring them back to life. They were both only replicas.
