Becoming Popular (The Shizuo Every Vatheonite Should Know)

Today, Cielo got an early morning shift, meaning that he had the rest of the day to himself. And he was going to spend his free time just going around the bubble. Already, he had explored the park and visited some random shops he had never been in before. There were stores dedicated just to selling fabric! And who knew that there were so many kinds of fabric too?

But for the moment, he was taking a break, sitting on the edge of a fountain in the plaza and watching people go by. That was also what was interesting about Vatheon: the people who lived in it. One particular person stood out to him, though. It was someone he recognized from a couple weeks back, during the Fairy Tale curse. Standing up, he called out, "Hey, Shizuo!"

Shizuo might not recognize him by looks, but he would probably be able to place him by voice.

The subject of friend loss was getting too depressing, and the last thing Cielo wanted is to make Shizuo's week even worse than it already was. Luckily, there was something else he could seize on to change the subject.

"What's sushi?"

And maybe he's really curious about this new food.

Shizuo definitely didn't have qualms with the subject change. Getting too deeply into his personal life wasn't something he did very often, anyway. "Sushi is really good," Shizuo replied. "It's rice made with different things, like vegetables and raw fish. You should try it. There's a restaurant here that has it."

"Sounds really good! I'll go get some sometime. Maybe bring Serph too." The combination of rice, vegetables, and raw fish sounds interesting. He trusts Shizuo's taste in food - it worked out really well during the curse, after all! "Where's the restaurant?"

"Serph's a good guy," Shizuo volunteered. Shizuo liked him, and Serph had helped him out a lot the other day. He made him feel more hopeful about the prospect of getting a better grip on control.

"It's not far. We can walk over there now if you want, and I'll show you."

Serph being a good guy, Cielo could agree with. But then again, he was probably biased. Probably. Just a little bit. "I'd like that," he said.

Shizuo seems to be cheering up a bit. Sometimes the best way to feel better is to just take your mind off something for a while.

Shizuo was cheering up. He liked having something to do, even if it was something simple. He motioned for Cielo to follow and started walking in the direction of the restaurant. "I've been to this place a couple of times. It's pretty good."

Then, he added, "There's a good bakery around here, too. Have you been there yet?"

Cielo shook his head as he walked by Shizuo. He learned about bakeries from Italy, but he had yet to visit one. "No, but I heard about them from a friend. That's a place where they make-" Give him a second here, Shizuo. "-bread, pastries, and cake, ja?"

Food was wonderful and Cielo was a ~~glutton~~ fan of eating, but he was curious about other things as well.

"What do you do for fun, Shizuo?"

"Yeah," Shizuo replied, though his tone was happy. He really liked the bakery. Sweet things were his favorite. "You should try that place out sometime too."

Shizuo was a simple man of simple tastes and interests. "I like to walk. Living here is nice in some ways, because it's easy to enjoy everything. I used to live in a city where it was hard to slow down and enjoy things. I like movies, too. Things like that. What about you?"

"I like to walk too," he answered. "And trying new things, not just food, ja?"

There was just so many things he could do in Vatheon that wasn't possible in the Junkyard. Hopefully, Shizuo didn't mind a list of things. He sounds positively excited and smiles as he rattles everything off.

"I like to explore the city. Oh, and going to the beach! We didn't have beaches where I come from. I also like gardening and flying. Definitely flying." Cielo paused for a moment. "...what's a movie?"

"Can you fly?" Shizuo asked. They were all good hobbies, but Shizuo had only met two people so far who could. He was interested in that.

"A movie is a story told through people pretending to be different people," Shizuo tried to explain. He wasn't the greatest at putting his thoughts into words, unfortunately. "My brother acts in movies - he pretends to be the characters to help tell the story."

He shrugged, realizing that might not be the best way to put it. "They have them around here, I think. It might be easier to watch one than to hear me talk about them."

Shizuo's explanation is good enough to give Cielo an idea of what a movie is. But like he said, it would probably be easier to understand if he saw one for himself.

"Ja, I can fly," Cielo nodded. He didn't see any reason to hide his demon form. There were people in Vatheon that have already seen it, and he sometimes used it while working at the clinic. "I can show you if you like."

"I'd like that," Shizuo replied. "I've met a couple of people here who can, but everyone is different. You might not do it the same way." That, and Shizuo just liked the idea of flying. It seemed fun.

He offered, and that offer was accepted, so Cielo stops walking and holds both arms out to his sides, the tattoo on his right leg glowing a bright blue color. When it fades, a demon stood before Shizuo.

Cielo hopped upward, hovering just a couple feet above the ground, completely upright. It almost seemed like he didn't need those wings at all.

The transformation didn't surprise Shizuo. He had witnessed a similar one with Serph earlier that week. Cielo was colorful in that form, and Shizuo could not help but think about his peacock appearance back during the fairytale.

He watched Cielo push himself off of the ground. "That's awesome," he said. Maybe it was a little childish, but Shizuo thought flying was a good ability to have. Definitely better than the ability to lose control and tear up a neighborhood. "Do you feel different, like that?"

It was, probably, Dyaus that prompted the bubble to choose to put him in a peacock's form during that week.

Feeling different...well, there was that one thing that he wasn't going to talk to anyone outside the Tribe about. But aside from that...

"I can do things like this I can't do as a human," he answered. His voice was noticeably different: it was lower and more beastly sounding, but it was still undeniably Cielo. Even in that form, he still had that accent of his. "Like use magic. Others like me might not feel the same, but I don't feel very different." He viewed his demon form as a part of himself. A part of who he, Cielo was. He did a little backwards loop in the air. "I can't see like this," Shizuo would probably note that there's a distinct lack of eyes. "but I have other senses to make up for it. So maybe it's a little animal-like, ja?"

He wasn't going to lie - sometimes he liked letting out a little roar.

Shizuo was really enjoying this little lesson. It made him think of Izaya - he bet that Izaya would love learning about something like this. "What kind of magic?" Then, catching himself, he amended, "If you want to talk about it. You don't have to."

Cielo didn't mind talking about his abilities at all. "Where I come from, you can learn all kinds," he explained. "But I know mostly electricity spells and supportive ones. One healing spell and one spell that puts things to sleep."

Dormina was incredibly useful here in Vatheon, he found. For various reasons. Oh, and there was one more thing.

"...I can also fire a laser from my mouth, but it's difficult and I don't like doing it." He's only done it once, and that was a very dire situation. His only regret was that he didn't strike a fatal blow with it. "So if you or someone you know are ever hurt, let me know, ja?"

Shizuo nodded. He wouldn't ask Cielo to do something that he did not want to do, and shooting lasers would be dangerous. However, spells like that did sound as though they would come in handy. "Okay, I will." Then he thought of Ion, who had healed him once, but at a cost to himself. "Does it hurt you to heal people? Or make you tired?"

Hurt him? Well, Cielo did have a technique that required him to sacrifice some of his strength to perform, but it wasn't the healing spell. "It's fine, just can't cast forever." There were quite a few extended battles he's been in where he's pushed his magical talents to the limit. Overuse of magic without rest or restoration of some kind would run his magic dry. "But it's worth it if it means I can help someone, ja?"

Shizuo nodded. "Yeah, but I know a guy who can heal, but he gets kind of sick afterward." Ion had healed him when Shizuo was in a rough spot - and passed out immediately. "So I just thought I'd ask." It would make him feel better about asking for help, if he ever needed it. Which, he hoped, would not be any time soon - that fight with Vegeta was the exception.

Getting sick after healing someone sounded terrible to Cielo. But even if he was like Shizuo's friend, he wouldn't mind doing it.

Even if sickness is something that very often completely incapacitates him.

"I don't mind it at all," he said. Cielo would expend all of his strength to help a friend if he had to. "It...makes me feel useful."

Shizuo smiled at that. "You're a good person, too, you know." He could understand wanting to feel useful. The few times he appreciated his strength was when it came in use to help someone.

It was good to hear that. He heard it a lot, from others, and from Serph, but sometimes, it's just very hard for Cielo to believe it. Not when he feels like everyone around him is just so much better than he is.

"Heh, thanks."

He was pretty glad to be in demon form. He wasn't sure if he would be able to hide his insecurity if he was a human.

Shizuo wouldn't have said it if he hadn't meant it. He resumed walking. It wouldn't bother him if Cielo chose to stay in that form. "It's just this way," he said, until they were finally by the restaurant.

"This is it. It's pretty good here."

To move, Cielo leaned forward and flapped his wings once to get going, rising up a little bit more as to not get into anyone's way. He circled overhead as Shizuo walked, something he often did this back in his world as a means of looking out for danger while the rest of the Tribe traveled on foot. Flying, even slow flying like this, always lifted his spirits. There really was nothing like moving through the air and sometimes, Cielo went up to the island just so he could soar around at top speed through that beautiful blue sky.

When Shizuo stops, he does too and lands and returns to his human form. He wants to be able to see the restaurant, after all. He catches a glimpse of the food through the windows. It's not like anything he's seen before that's for sure!

Shizuo would ask him if he wanted to try it right then, but he knew that Cielo had already mentioned bringing Serph in the future. Instead, he points out a few dishes from the window and explains them to Cielo. When he has finished that, he said, "Now you know a little bit about it, so when you decide to eat here, you'll be able to figure out what you want to eat."

Cielo listened to Shizuo's explanations of various sushi and yes, it does sound delicious. .He was a little proud of himself because he actually understood what most of those ingredients are.

Sushi is now officially on the "foods to try" list.

"You want to come with us when we try it?" he asked.

Shizuo was a little surprised by the invitation. He wasn't really used to getting invitations to go out and do things from people that weren't Zelda and Izaya. But if being in Vatheon had taught him that he could make friends with people without them being afraid of him. It was nice. He gave Cielo a smile. "Sure," he said. "If you want me along."

"Of course I want you to come along," he said, looking genuinely confused. "Why wouldn't I?"

As far as Cielo knew, there was no reason to not invite Shizuo to come along. It only seemed fair, after all. He wouldn't have known about sushi without him.

"I don't know," Shizuo answered with a sheepish shrug. "I'm just not used to getting asked to do things. I'd like to, though."

Really? That was genuinely surprising for Cielo to hear. "Why not?"

Ah, that was a little bit of an uncomfortable question. "I don't have a lot of friends back where I come from," Shizuo said. "People are...kind of afraid of me."

Afraid, huh? That is something that Cielo is afraid of here in Vatheon: that people would be afraid of him after finding out about his demon. And what he has to do because of that demon. "Well, I'm not scared of you."

Shizuo smiled genuinely at that. Even though he had learned that the people and creatures of Vatheon were more open-minded than the average person in Ikebukuro, it still wasn't something he heard very often. "I'm glad." Then, feeling as though he should explain, he added, "I'm pretty strong, and when people find that out, they sometimes worry that I might accidentally hurt them." Granted, Shizuo wasn't known for keeping his temper under control, so that concern wasn't entirely without basis.

Strong, huh? Cielo wondered exactly how strong, but Shizuo must be quite strong if it could make people afraid of him. "That's sad, because if they got to know you, they'd see you're a good person." And he meant that too. "It's not much, but I'm your friend, ja? Serph too. Us three should get sushi soon."

"Thank you," Shizuo replied earnestly. "That does mean a lot." And it really did. It might not seem like much to Cielo, but it wasn't something Shizuo heard very often - especially not back in Ikebukuro. "Yeah, we should."

"Watch a movie, too." Sure, food was at the front of his mind, but Cielo didn't forget about those movie things. "I have to go back now, but we'll let you know when we're free, ja?" And he might as well go too. The more Cielo looked at the restaurant, the harder it was becoming to not just go in there right at that moment.

He paused for a moment, wondering whether he should walk or fly back to the base, but eventually settled on the former.

"That sounds great," Shizuo replied, tone genuine. He was feeling a lot better than he had been earlier, thanks to this walk with Cielo. "Just let me know." He gave Cielo a wave before turning to head off in his own direction. "See ya."
