Identity Crisis

Who: Dark Link and anyone who comes across him

It hurts...

Not the park bench to the face, though that had dislocated his nose and given him two black eyes, causing him to look like a raccoon until he discovered Vatheon's version of a fairy's fountain, the coral.

No, he was fine now, physically, and he was safe here, camped out under the trees, even if his sword and shield had gone missing. What hurt was something else.

She knows everything. She knows about Hyrule, and magic, and everything I don't.

He fought to put the breaks on that train of thought, terrified of what lay around the next cognitive bend. But, as trains do, his thoughts rolled irrepressibly onward.

What if she's right? What if I'm not Link?

A long pause as his whole being fought tooth and nail to keep away from the looming question.

...if she's right, then what's the point of me?

What, really?! Can I put it in my hat so I can carry everything?!

[Dark Link's excitement is almost palpable. A way to make his hat work! He's one step closer! Signless must be a Sage, sent to help him on his quest.]

[Not a Sage, just a really nice guy.]

[Signless laughs at Link's enthusiasm.]

I'll see what I can do. I don't even know if sylladexes can be made, but if they can, my friend will know how to do it.

[Moving slowly, so as not to startle the child, Signless pulls out his own sylladex. When it opens, it asks him a riddle similar to a Zen koan, and he answers it smoothly, pulling out a few small items and showing them to Link before putting them away. The last one he retrieves is a flower, which he offers to the boy before putting the sylladex away.]

Is that something you would like?

So you answer it and it gives you your stuff? I dunno if I'd be any good at riddles.

[Probably not, truth be told. He has a very simple mind. He does look absolutely delighted at being freely given the flower. A sage is giving him an item. It must be incredibly important!]

I'll take really good care of it!

[Signless smiles; the child is actually quite handsome and engaging when he smiles. No one so young should carry the weight of the world on their shoulders.]

Well, mine asks riddles, but you can set them to whatever you like. One friend of mine has one that works with colors and lights, for example. It would be up to you to decide how you wanted to retrieve your items.

[He reaches out and gently pats the back of Link's hand.]

I'm sure you will.

[Clearly an item as important as this was something that needed to be kept close. In his hat as it is, it would be crushed, so he thinks of another tact. He looks himself up and down for a moment before very, very carefully slipping the stem of the flower into one of the holes for lacing at the collar of his shirt. There, safe until he gets one of these sylladex things.]

Do you think there's one where you just think of the item and it comes out? That's how Link does it. Or maybe something with a grid!

[Where that idea came from, he wasn't sure, but it seemed just as right.]

[Awww, he's wearing the flower as a decoration! Signless isn't quite sure why Zelda has such issues with this young man, but he's finding him quite pleasant, once he comes out of his shell a bit.]

[He does notice how he refers to Link as separate from himself, but doesn't mention that.]

A grid, hmmmmm... I've seen ones like that before. Perhaps with a simple puzzle of moving things around to access the item?

[Dark Link's delight is palpable at the prospect.]

I love puzzles! Sliding puzzles are good, but my favorites are ones where you have to jump on a switch and then run as fast as you can to get around the room to get the item or the door before the switch deactivates. Lighting the torches is good too! Especially when you get a key or a heart piece for it.

[Signless has no idea what a heart piece is, but he certainly understands and appreciates Dark Link's enthusiasm!]

[Sadly "please" and "thank you" are not really in his vocabulary, basic manners not being something that Ganondorf found necessary knowledge for a construct created to slow down his enemy and not much else, but Dark Link wants very much to show his gratitude towards Signless. He stalls a bit, a slight blush creeping into his face.] You're.. really nice, you know.

I try to be.

[Signless looks at Dark Link closely for a moment, then smiles.]

A nice way to show your gratitude is to say 'thank you.' And then I'll say 'you're welcome,' and everything will be friendly and polite.

[It would look snarky, written down, but he says it with such warmth in his voice that it would be very difficult to mistake it for anything but a teacher gently guiding a student.]

Then thank you, Signless! [He smiles broadly, all hesitance he displayed at their initial meeting long since vanished. He's happy, honestly happy, and he latches onto that feeling strongly not wanting to ever let it go.]

When can you talk to your friend?

You're welcome, Link.

[Look at that! A manners lesson and a gift of a flower! Signless smiles back, enjoying the other's happiness.]

I'll talk to him as soon as I can, all right? In the meantime, you keep your collection nice and safe so it will be ready.

Oh I will. I'm going to start looking for a house soon. I think it might be more comfortable than sleeping on the ground, even if I do like it outside.

[He rolls his collection up in the doormat and tucks it safely back away into the bush]

That sounds like a good plan.

[Signless stands up, ready to take his leave.]
