Where Did You Get All This Romance From, Selphie?

Characters: Selphie and Kenshin
Location: Their house!

Time: Valentine's Day morning! (technically in a couple of hours my time)

Valentine's morning eventually came around, and Selphie was just so happy that she was back to normal size again - she wouldn't have managed any of this otherwise. So some people had suggested breakfast, and that's just what Selphie did. She knew that Kenshin woke early, so she'd woken up really super early, especially for a Selphie. The early hours were spent in the kitchen making waffles and pancakes, and eggs cooked in heart-shaped frying pans. Some of the pancakes were a little black, but they tasted sweet, and that was the main thing. Selphie made a huge breakfast spread on the living room table - there was orange juice, tea, the waffles, pancakes, eggs, bacon, fruit, and in the centre was a heart-shaped box full of the best chocolate Vatheon had. Selphie had been to the chocolate shop and tried a lot to figure out which was best for Kenshin.

Table laid and ready, Selphie quickly got herself dressed. She'd been shopping, and found herself a beautiful, traditional Japanese dress in red. She'd put her hair up too, complete with sticks. This wasn't quite what people had meant by 'wear something special' and Selphie knew that. Just that this was more appropriate, and it was pretty too!

Eventually, she took a deep breath and ran up to Kenshin's room. She knocked on the door and called, "Breakfast's ready!" Then she rushed back to stand by the table, waiting to see what he might think!

Ah Kenshin, you do look so graceful sitting on a chair like that - so princely! Selphie smiled back before going about pouring the tea. She'd made it just before she called him down, so it should still be hot. Her hands were shaking ever-so slightly with nervousness, but she managed to place the cup in front of him without spilling anything.

"And...what would you like to eat?" She took the plate from in front of him, and started to hover over the various foods she's laid out.

Kenshin looked over everything. It was all rather unfamiliar to him. "What would you suggest?"

"Let's see..." Selphie piled his plate full of pancakes and waffles, and she set it in front of him with a knife and fork. Then she leaned over to grab some chocolate sauce and some maple syrup, and she plonked them both beside him. "These sauces taste real good on them too!"

It would be a little weird maybe if she just stood by his chair, watching him eat, so she finally dropped herself into the chair directly opposite, still watching carefully for a reaction.

Oh western silverware. How confusing you are! Knives were weapons, not tableware. He stared at it for a moment.

"It looks very delicious, yet I am unsure how to eat this," he confessed. Oh cultural clash! Until now, he'd done well to avoid using any sort of foreign silverware. Chopsticks worked just fine for pretty much anything he ate. Spoons worked well with everything else. But this knife and fork business? Confusing. He just didn't understand western ways of doing things quite yet.

Oh gosh, Selphie hasn't really thought about this. So she leapt from her chair and crossed over to Kenshins's chair. Standing close, she leaned forward and held her hands over his, trying to guide his hands into holding the cutlery properly. "Like this!" She was just busy trying to help, and it was only after she held his hands to cut up some pancake that she realised her closeness and blushed a little. Still, she just stayed there, instead of pulling away like she might have done.

He hadn't expected such a response, yet he made no move to push her away. He did like the closeness of someone he held dear to him.

The movements were odd but somewhat similar to combat. He found it rather odd he had to fight his food to eat it, but he found western things to be rather odd anyway. He'd just have to try it some more so it felt less foreign. Maybe.

"You are quite the teacher," Kenshin complimented.

Selphie laughed a little at the compliment, and she couldn't resist the opportunity to turn to him and plant the smallest, quickest little kiss on his jaw. But then he had a decent mouthful of pancake on his fork, and she lifted his wrist as though in direction for him to try it now.

That kissing stuff always caught him by surprise, but he was quickly distracted by the pancakes. They looked like okonomiyake, but smelled nothing like them. Oh well, down the hatch! They were surprisingly good. "These are quite delicious," he complimented after chewing a mouthful of pancake.

Selphie almost jumped in delight at the compliment, and she clapped her hands together, beaming and blushing that he seemed to be enjoying them. "Ooh, really? I'm so glad!" She hovered by his arm, watching to see if he could manage any more cutting up by himself with the fork and knife.

Kenshin's movements were very precise as he cut the pancakes, much like if he were cutting them with a katana. What an odd yet strangely effective way to eat, but he did so anyway. He didn't know of a better way to break apart the pancakes.

Of course Kenshin was a quick learner, and Selphie smiled to see him use the forks and knife so easily. So she moved away to sit in her own seat again, and she helped herself to some pancakes, pouring a liberal amount of hot chocolate sauce over them. She watched Kenshin a moment longer before tucking in herself, "These aren't so bad after all!"

Kenshin smiled. "I think you are quite a great cook," he added, eating another mouthful.

Selphie almost choked on her own pancake at the comment, and she reached to pour herself some orange juice to clear her throat. "Kenshin, you're too sweet to me!"

"I speak the truth," he said. Compliments weren't something he'd simply give out. They were earned, and for him, Selphie had deserved them all.

Selphie flushed at that and finished off her pancake before helping herself to a waffle. She lowered her eyes and just began eating it thoughtfully. This was nice - the two of them seated having breakfast together. She was pleased that it was going well, but now she wasn't very sure of what to say.

It was quite pleasant. He did so enjoy spending time with her. He wasn't much of a conversationalist, however, and he quietly ate the pancakes until Moses came over and started mewing at him to get on his lap. Setting his fork down, he picked up the critter and let him settle down in his lap.

Selphie looked up when she heard Moses mew, and she smiled, as she always did, to see how affectionate the two were with each other. There was so much on the table that hadn't been touched, but she knew that would be the case. Some of it would keep for later, but in the meantime she just stood from her chair, and quietly began to clear up the plates as Moses entertained Kenshin.

Kenshin offered a smile at her as she cleared the table. He wasn't the clearing type, being a lord, but he did appreciate it. He scritched the kitties ears as he sat on his lap, purring up a storm.

But that was okay, because Selphie liked doing this. And it was quite fun when she was all dressed up too. She wanted so much to show that she could do all those things that women were supposed to do. So she kept clearing up, and she began to wash the dishes quietly in the kitchen. Eventually, she came back through to the room drying her hands on a towel, "You know... I am sorry..."

Kenshin had busied himself with tea and petting the cat. He could set for hours petting the cat simply because it was peaceful. It was in a way like meditation: peaceful and with his mind at ease.

Kenshin looked up at her as she returned, her statement was surprising. "For what? You have no reason to apologize for anything."

Selphie folded up the towel and draped it over the back of a chair. She looked down at it while she smoothed it out, "For.. The.." She shrugged a little, "Kissing... I mean, I know, it's not what you do or what you know and I don't want you to think I was dishonoured and I'd like it if you liked it but that's okay and even if you don't I still love you..." All in one breath.

Ah, yes. That. The reoccurring subject. It seemed like such a touchy subject. She wanted to be kissed and he was completely oblivious to it. At least she confirmed his worry that he'd dishonored her somehow by reacting inappropriately with a tradition of hers.

"I know it means a great deal to you, but it is something I had not encountered before here." It was a bit difficult to explain something which he'd only known as true. These other traditions he just didn't know and probably would have never known if he hadn't been taken here. "Perhaps in time, it will feel less foreign. And even if it doesn't, it hardly means I will love you any less."

"I know..." Selphie just nodded and kept looking down at the towel, her hands clutching the back of the chair. She glanced at Kenshin and Moses, and smiled again. But then, she couldn't help but feel a little pang of jealousy. Yes, of a cat. But Selphie was very much the jealous type.

She cleared her throat, trying to ignore what people had said about his reaction to her kisses. Folks said it was weird, that he probably didn't feel the same way, that most guys would love it. But then, Kenshin wasn't most guys. And she turned to her face to him, her eyes closed but her lips smiling, "But we love each other, and that's the most important bit, right?"

He nodded softly, unaware of the thoughts running through her head. "The most important bit in the world." For him, it was an unbreakable bond, a feeling he couldn't quite ignore.

Selphie smiled up at him, blushing a little at his comment, and she moved to stand beside his chair, leaning over to pet Moses with him. "Is there anything else you wanna do today?"

Kenshin smiled in return. He didn't have any plans, but he wasn't against doing something. "Is there something you wish to do?"

Really, Selphie hadn't thought this far ahead. Breakfast was only a morning thing, and she hadn't considered what they might do with the rest of their day. "Hmm... I dunno. I'm kinda sleepy just now from all that cooking!"

"You should rest," Kenshin offered. "You have worked so hard. We shall do something another day." Valentine's Day was a just that: a day. He didn't see why love and affection could only be expressed on one day alone.

"Right!" Selphie had never even thought about Valentine's Day. It was just a custom, so she did it the same way anyone else would. And besides, what if not doing something had meant that Kenshin would be upset?

She clasped her hands together as she edged away from the table, "Okay.. Well, I hope you enjoyed your breakfast.."

Well he certainly didn't look upset as he offered her a warm smile. "I did indeed. It was most wonderful."

Encouraged by that smile, Selphie leaned forward and gave Kenshin a little peck on the cheek before turning quickly for the door. She was hoping that he'd get a little more used to it, but that was more like a hit and run.

"Alright. I bet I'll be up sometime later for lunch!"

Kenshin smiled a bit brighter. "Rest well. May Bishamonten watch over you."
