3rd Combo

Characters: Lloyd and Colette

[After he and Zelos had parted ways, Lloyd had turned and headed back to where the Yutopil Apartments should be. Everything's different, though, and he hasn't even been here a month. It doesn't help that his own memories are subtly shifting, becoming more a knight's past than a boy from Sylvarant. If he'd been consciously aware of that change going on, it would have scared him.

But right now he's concentrating on finding his friend. Finally, his footsteps retrace the way to the apartment building both he and Colette live in. Like everything else, it doesn't look the same, but this is it. He knows it. And if he's right, this should be Colette's room right here. He knocks on the door, a hint of worry in his voice when he speaks. So many things have changed, so many curses. He doesn't know what to expect.]

You might've just been cursed a little and haven't realized it yet! The last curse made people confess things, and some people confessed more than others.

[And I was one of the ones who confessed. She blinks and smiles.] A unicorn? Does this mean only maidens can get near him?

[She frowns, remembering something. Yep she's going to worry.] Lloyd, what if he loses his horn? Will he die like the unicorn at Lake Umacy?

Huh. Well, if I'm only a little bit cursed, I don't think I need to worry too much. I feel fine. [He looks at her.] What about you, Colette?

[Yeah, he remembers what the Professor said when they found the unicorn at Lake Umacy. Lloyd shakes his head.]

Nah. Maybe the Professor was wrong, or maybe not all unicorns are like that, but Zelos let me get close to him without any problems.

[A pause. Whoa, he hadn't even thought about that. Worry twinges inside him now, too.]

You think someone might try to take his horn? But... but it's just a curse! People wouldn't want something that isn't real, right?

[She smiles.] I'm fine too. I don't think I'm cursed at all.

[She frowns a little and moves out of the doorway to let Lloyd go inside if he wants to.]

Maybe he's a different type of unicorn. If he's a different type of unicorn, maybe taking his horn won't hurt him.

[She sighs and brushes her hair back, going inside her apartment.] This curse changed how people look and act, and how Vatheon looks, so maybe they wouldn't know it isn't real. I don't think anyone is sick enough to need to be healed using a unicorns horn.

[He does come inside when she steps out of the way, needing no words to recognize the invitation. For some reason, though, he follows a strange urge to bow before doing so. Whoa. Talk about weird.]

Let's hope he is different, then, just in case. We should try to keep an eye on him, too. If anyone goes after him, we'll protect him.

[Simple, matter-of-fact determination. He'll always stand up for his friends.

Still, he can't help but share another mischievous grin.]

By the way, he's a girl unicorn right now.

Yeah. Just in case. [She smiles at him again and closes the door to her apartment. Seeing the still toppled chair, she walks over and rights it, pushing it in to the table.

Wait. What? She turns around and blinks.]

The curse made Zelos a girl?

[She giggles and grins.]

You're not going to let him forget this, are you?

[Completely and utterly shameless.]

You think he'd let me forget if I was a girl unicorn?

[Letting the grin slide back into a normal smile, he heads over to Colette's couch and sits down, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees.]

It was really kind of cool, though. I never got to get that close to the unicorn back in our world. [And he still didn't understand why.] Maybe later on I should thank him. Hey, maybe you can go see him, too!

[She laughs and sits on the other couch ~~since according to the picture of their apartment there are at least two~~, resting her head on one hand.] Nope!

[She smiles softly.] Meeting the unicorn in our world was really cool, even though we had to take his horn. Make sure when you thank him that he remembers being a unicorn. Sometimes people don't remember what happens during curses. And I don't think Zelos wants me to see him like this, so I'll pass on seeing him right now.

[She sits up and rubs the back of her head.] Maybe everyone can go near Zelos or maybe its just those who are...[;afjdofjas how to explain without saying it really bluntly] pure, like the unicorn in our world but not just pure girls or pure women.

So if someone has a pure heart?

[Come on, Colette, did you really think he'd clue in as easily as that? But hey, close enough, right? Thinking about his conclusion for a moment, Lloyd smiles, looking pleased.]

I didn't think I was that pure hearted. I mean, I'm nowhere near as good as you. But I guess I was good enough!

[~~Or maybe he was just more pure than Zelos. Oh wait, that's really not saying much!~~]

Hey, the unicorn in our world told you it'd be reborn after it lost its horn, right? You think that'd happen to Zelos, too?

[Yep, close enough! She nods, smiling.]

I don't think that's exactly it, but something like that. I don't think the Professor would be able to get near Zelos as he is right now though, since she couldn't get near the unicorn back home even though she's a girl so she could've been a maiden.

[~~Y e p that isn't saying much~~ She blinks and frowns.]

Maybe, but if he gets reborn...he wouldn't be Zelos anymore, would he? He'd be reborn as a unicorn who's always been a unicorn...unless at the end of the curse he got turned back into Zelos and remembered everything that happened... Let's just try to make sure he doesn't lose his horn.

[Just enough to leave him feeling as confused as the first time he'd been told why the Professor couldn't get near the unicorn in their world. He just blinks at Colette, an expression of utter cluelessness on his face, then shakes his head and smiles, shrugging it off.]

I'm not really sure I get it, but... I think I've got it. I guess it's a good thing the Professor isn't here. Poor Zelos. I bet she'd try to study him.

[He sobers when Colette goes on, his amusement falling away.]

He'd lose his memories... [Determination creeps into his voice.] You're right. We can let that happen. By my honor as a knight, I'll do everything I can to defend him!

[She doesn't want to be the one to explain why the Professor couldn't get near the unicorn, especially since she is only guessing the reason. She just smiles and laughs a little.]

If she wasn't affected by the curse, yeah. I think she would try to study Zelos. She couldn't study the unicorn back home so I bet she'd be fascinated.

[She blinks and reaches out to touch Lloyd's knee, looking at him worriedly.]

Lloyd...you're not a knight. I don't think Sylvarant even has knights. Tethe'Alla does but we grew up on Sylvarant...Are you sure you're not cursed?

You think she'd let a curse stop her from something she wanted to study? Forget protecting Zelos from other people here. We'd have to protect him from her.

[He's grinning as he says that, like he's half joking there, but... part of him is actually serious, too. The Professor can really be scary.]

Huh? But I...

[He stops, mentally retracing the words he just said. Wait, he did just call himself a knight. A frown creases his forehead.]

I don't know why I said that. It just... came out.

[She laughs and retracts her hand from his knee.]

No, but this one might've made her forget she was the Professor. I bet she would've loved to see all the people who changed during this curse...

[She frowns a little too, thinking it over.]

Maybe it's the curse? It could have made you a knight like it made Zelos a unicorn. [A bright smile] I don't think you as a knight would be much different from you when you're not cursed.

Yeah... I bet she would. Still, I'm kind of glad she's not here to see any of it.

[She'd definitely go into one of her obsessive modes. He really, really doesn't want to be subjected to that.

Before Colette's hand can get too far, though, Lloyd reaches to take hold of it. He doesn't want to admit it, not to her, but the idea of being cursed, even benignly, makes him more than a little anxious. On the other hand...]

You think I could be a knight?

[Shyly flattered.]

[She laughs a little. She doesn't want Vatheon to be subjected to Ruin Mode, but sometimes what the Professor says during her Ruin Modes is really interesting!] Yeah.

[She blinks, gives him a smile, and doesn't try to take her hand away from his.]

Yep! Not a knight like the Papal Knights, though; one of the nice knights in fairy tales.

[Interesting. He and Colette have always had different definitions for that word. Not that he minds. That's just the way people are. Still, "interesting" when it comes to Raine usually comes with homework attached.]

The kind who fights dragons and rescues people from towers?

[He shares a grin with her, because he's actually done those things.]

Does this mean I get to be Sir Lloyd?

[Homework can be fun! She remembers Lloyd getting Genis to do his most of the time so she figures he probably really doesn't want any homework when Genis isn't here.

She grins and laughs a little.] Yep!

[She's part of the reason he had to do those things. She blinks.] I guess you do get to be Sir Lloyd! You're still Lloyd to me though. [Another smile.] Lloyd is Lloyd, no matter what happens to you here or back home.

[Yeah, without Genis, he'd actually have to do that homework. Oh man...

He squeezes her hand, then lets it go.]

And you, my lady, will always be Colette.

[He's just playing along with the role, but somehow it almost feels natural to add 'my lady' like that.]

But if I'm supposed to be a knight, maybe I should go out and see if anyone needs my help. With all these curses, someone might be in trouble.

[She'd help him! She just wouldn't do it all of his homework herself.

She rests her hand on her knee and smiles at him again.]

You've said so before, too.

[She just smiles a bit wider at that. "My fair lady". She blinks and grins.]

That's a good idea! We already know that I'm fine, so go out and help someone if they need it.

[She's not going to get up yet though. When Lloyd gets up, she will.]

[Yeah, standing up now. Knight or not, he can't sit still knowing there might be people who need him.]

If anything happens, you'll call me, right?

[Just because she's not cursed now doesn't mean something might not still happen. Maybe curses spread like diseases, or maybe someone who was cursed would run into her and cause trouble.

He won't worry too much about "what if's," though. That's just not in his nature. Make some plans, then focus on the things that are at hand.]

[She stands up too. The only reason she won't be going with him is like she said before; Zelos wouldn't want her to see him right now. Still...]

Yep! If you need help defeating something to help someone, don't hesitate to call me, okay? I haven't actually used any of my artes or angel skills since I've arrived, but if anything I'll just be more tired after I use them if I even need to use them.

[Curses don't spread like diseases, but no one knows why some people are affected and others aren't. She smiles and walks over to the door, opening it for him so he can just leave when he's ready to go.]

[That comment about her getting tired makes him pause and look at her with concern.]

If you haven't had to use your artes in a while, you should be careful. It'd be bad if something happened and you got too tired in the middle of something important. What if it was a fight or while we're trying to help someone?

[He can almost hear Kratos's lecture right now, but with annoyance he shoves that voice aside. He doesn't need any advice from that guy.]

[She blinks.]

I'll be careful. I wasn't going to use Judgement or Grand Cross; just Ray Thrust and maybe Angel Feathers if I had too. Yeah, it really would be bad. After this curse is over, I'll start practicing using my artes to if we need to fight I'll know my limit.

[That guy is your father Lloyd...even though you don't know that yet.]

[Lloyd blinks.]

Grand Cross?

[That one is new to him.]

If you want any help practicing, I'd be glad to accompany you.

[There's that curse's influence on his speech again.

Also, fff, good luck convincing him that jerk is his dad.]

It's a light spell. [One of the only ones she can use! She grins.]

And I'd like that! I'm not sure if anyone else here can use artes and I wouldn't want to use them against someone who couldn't use them against me.

[She and Zelos have already decided to never tell Lloyd that Kratos is his dad! They both know he wouldn't believe them and Zelos doesn't want to even speak about Kratos so it works.]

Really? You'll have to show me sometime!

[He grins back, then laughs and rubs the back of his neck.]

How about we set up some practice dummies somewhere first?

[He'd, uh, kind of like to know what he's getting into before he invites Colette to cast spells and throw chakrams at him.

See, this is why you guys are his friends. You don't even have to ask him to know what he doesn't want to know. He can live on in blissful ignorance!]

Okay!

[She leans against the wall and keeps grinning.]

That sounds like a really good idea. I forgot we're not from the same time so we don't know how strong each other is. [Yep she doesn't remember how strong Lloyd was compared to how strong they were at the end of the journey.

And yeah uh knowing how powerful the other is would be really really good.

Yep!]

Yeah, who knows? Maybe you're stronger than me!

[That's... actually kind of a weird thought for him. He's never thought of Colette as weak. After all, she has angelic strength and magic on her side. But when it comes to weapons like swords and chakrams, he's used to being better. Fighting with weapons was his strong suit.

If she's stronger, then I'll just have to work even harder to get better! He nods to himself, smiling. He doesn't mind Colette being strong - but he wants to be strong enough to protect her.]

You know this place better than I do. How about you think up a good place to practice and work on making those dummies while I check around to see if anyone needs me help?

Maybe!

[She smiles. Although he was self-taught and she wasn't, he got an awful lot more practice actually fighting monsters. Since all he can really do in a fight is attack with his swords, and use some artes, it makes sense that he would be very good at it.

She might not want to be protected (as if she isn't able to take care of herself), but if she can't protect herself it'd be nice to know that her friends can protect her if they need to.]

Alright! I wonder what we should use to make the dummies...

I'm sure you'll think of something.

[He has every confidence in you, Colette!]

If you can't think of anything, I'll help you when we're not still dealing with this curse. Good luck, all right?

[He lifts his hand, then starts to head for the door.]

[She smiles, already thinking about materials that might work. Straw might but straw can break easily...]

Okay! Good luck! I hope you find people you can help.

Thank you, my lady! See ya!

[And with that strange mix of normal speech and not, he takes off, ready to do his part to make help wherever he can.]

[And she looks after him for a little while with a smile before shutting the door again. What to use to make the dummies? The forest would probably work well to fight at...]
