Up for a game?

Who: Radical Edward and her dog Ein, plus anyone who wants to join.

[A curious sight will greet the visitors of the bubble. A scrawny young girl sitting at a small table in the plaza. The table has two seats, which she is currently occupying one of. On the table is a peculiar fish-themed chess set.]

[The board is set up, but with no moves currently made on it. The black pieces are facing towards the girl. The chair across from her, in front of the white pieces, is currently empty. She is staring at the board, waiting.]

[Next to her, on the ground, is a brown welsh corgi. He seems to be occupying himself by exploring the immediate area around the plaza, but for the most part, sticks within sight distance of the girl at the table.]

[She talks in 3rd person huh?]

Shirley is um...happy to play with you too? I never played chess before so I'm glad it was with Edward?

[And she'll move another small fish piece from the side forward. No idea what she's doing but oh well]

[Edward is quite the ~~handful~~unique child.]

Oh! You have not played before? Edward can help you if you wish!

[Edward swings one of her seahorse knights out, moving in a strange pattern.]

This one is the Horsey person... or Knight. He moves in an 'L'. Three spaces in a direction and then one over.

[Once Shirley heard Edward's instructions, that's what she did. Got the knight and moved it in a L format. She moved straight up and then one space to the left]

Oh? Like this? It seems rather...complicated.

The horsey-people are weird like that. They can be your super-secret weapon.

They are the only pieces that can jump other pieces, and they have such a different method of movement that they can surprise those that are unprepared for what they can do. Edward likes them.

[Edward moves another of her little guys forward, this time two spaces.]

You already moved with the pawny-people too. They are the little guys, the front-liners; food for the meat-grinder. They move one space forward, except on their first move where they can move two spaces forward. They can only capture diagonally in front of them, not directly forward.

The super-y fun part about pawns though, if you can keep them alive to get all the way across the board...

[She throws her arms out wide.]

They get promotions!!

The can become any other piece you want them to, except for another king.

[Oh my, Ed could certainly go on, couldn't she?]

[...wat]

I-I see, now I'm starting to understand a why chess is famous for the way it is played!

[So many rules and strategies to play this game. But now the problem was what else she can do now. Now that Edward told all the rules, Shirley had to play this seriously. Hm...what else can do now?

With no other options, she made another step forward with the pawn. Yup, she had a feeling she wasn't going to very good at this.]

I'm afraid that you might have to be patient, I never played a game like this before so...I'm still learning as we go.

Edward will be the most patient chess-teaching-person, ever!

[She will go over the rest of the pieces, the Rook, the Bishop, the Queen and the King. She opts to leave out the fancier rules like en passant and castling, it would complicate things far too much for someone new to the game.]

[Ed will continue to aid Shirley as they play, and she moves her next piece forward. Ed had already decided to go really easy on her new friend. Going so far as to leave openings and making other 'mistakes' that she would not normally make were she playing someone like Chessmaster Hex back home. She loved chess and wanted to share it with friends of all skill levels.]

[Shirley raised an eyebrow. Okay, she'll trust the girl.

As she finally sits down and listens to what Edward says, the blond simply just stared at the board. Yup, she can tell that this is one complicated game.

For a couple of seconds, the girl wasn't sure what to do. Her hand was up above the board to look at what she could do. She could feel herself getting a bit nervous and ,once again, moved one of the rookie pieces just to see what Edward will do]

[Edward shifts another on of her pawns, leaving one of her earlier pawns open to capture diagonally by one of the pieces Shirley had moved. Ed was testing her to see if she would notice the opening.]

So where is the Shirley-Person from? Edward is from Earth and the Bebop.

[And so Shirley did but she was hesitating. Her hand hovers over the piece that is suppose to be captured. As she places her hand over it...]

I'm...from a place called the Legacy, it's kind of like a moving continent if that makes sense!

[Off she goes to capture it!]

[Ed smiles even brighter when the piece is captured, pleased her 'student' passed her first test.]

Not really, but Ed notices a lot of things here do not make sense. But just because it does not make sense, does not mean Ed does not believe you. Ed believes other things that do not make sense. Yep yep! So how does a continent move?

[Edward moves another one of her pieces, this time no test attached.]

[By some crazy mechanics that not even the game knows. They did not explain it so it's up to the viewers to find out! However...]

I'm not sure but I do know that it was created by something from outer space! And over the years, it managed to gather up the leftovers from the world! That's how it started to become as big as a continent! At least, that's how I heard it.

[There was a lot more she was leaving out but she's going with that. She was never a good liar but she can at least try to make it as vague as possible. Using one of the knights, she moved forward as well]

Ed thinks that sounds crazy and fun. Anything from outer space is fun, though, like MPU!

[Edward was content with her answer, even if it seemed like she was hiding something, Ed did not want her talking about things that would make her new friend uncomfortable.]

[Okay test time number two: Ed moves her knight again into what could become a trap. To make this test more difficult Edward wants to see if she can think two turns ahead. If Shirley moves one of her pawns to threaten the Knight, Ed will be forced to move it into the threatened square of the Knight Shirley just moved. She watches to see if she can figure it out.]

MPU? What's that?

[And Shirley thank Edward for that!

As the blond watched what her friend did, she was starting to get a little confused. She had a feeling this was a trap but she wasn't sure just what kind it was. It felt like any movement that she makes would lead into something bad.

Hm...what can she do?

With no other choice, Shirley did move on with her pawns. Bad move!]

MPU? Oh!

He is the central processing core of the D-135 weather satellite. Edward obtained a copy of him. He was lonely so Ed copied him to Tomato so he could have someone to be with. Otherwise he would keep drawing the doodles that got him in trouble.

[Ed notes the move she made without changing her expression. Ed captures the pawn with her Knights. But, another test, this time the knight was exposed diagonally, across the board, to one of Shirley's bishops. Ed wanted to see if she was thinking with all the pieces or just focused mainly on her pawns.]

You...copied him to a tomato? Uh...that's rather...I don't think I ever heard of anything like that before. [And a little strange but..

Once Ed captures the pawn, Shirley let out a sad sigh. She should have seen that coming, didn't she? Oh well, she'll make it up during the next round! If she can handle fighting monsters, chess should be no problem! ...Right?

After that move, using one of the pawns again wouldn't be a good idea. She'll need to use another piece. It was then that she noticed that the Knight was in that diagonal path with nothing block it. With took the chance and use her bishop right there]

Not copied him to a tomato. Copied him to Tomato. Tomato is Ed's computer. So now he goes with Ed where she goes. He is no longer lonely.

[Edward smiles as her Knight was captured, She was certainly learning, if nothing else. Ed was proud of her student, but not enough to threaten her bishop with her remaining knight. She would have to retreat with it, if she noticed.]

Oohhh, I see, that explains a couple of things! [And she let out a small smile] That's really nice of you to do that. I think...he really appreciates your company if you did that!

[And she noticed! Now came the problem of what to do with it. Hm...Edward might want to do something with the bishop now that she took her knight. Should she take a step back? Might as well]

MPU got in trouble for drawing pictures on the Earth, back when he was lonely. Edward is glad to have him.

[Edward was growing increasingly pleased with her student. Shirley was a quicker read then she gave herself credit for. A quick search of the board, and Edward moves one of her pawns, no test this time.]

By the way, mind if I ask what kind of world do you live in? If you're able to do something like that, it sounds like your world must be quite the place to live!

[Shirley stared at the board once more. Uh...this wasn't a trick or anything right? Hm...she had a feeling she might regret this later but she's curious as to what Ed might do. Hi, have a Queen moving forward]

Edward lives on the Earth. That is, when she is not on Bebop. Earth's continents do not move, like the Legacy. Though they do get rained on by asteroids... A lot, actually. So much so, in fact, most people had to flee to Mars. Yep-yep!

[Oh a queen on the field! Things were getting spicy. Well, Edward would not want to keep the lady waiting. Ladies liked company. The black queen moves as well, not threatening anything directly, but there she was.]

[Whhaatttt]

But that means you...it seems like you can live in space in your world! That's quite impressive! I...I don't think we'll be able to live anything like that in my world. At least, not any time soon...

[Hm...Shirley makes one more move for the queen. Let's see what happens now!]

Oh yes! Humans have spread to most of the solar system since the Gate-y disaster. Some still love on the Earth, but not many. It is fun! That is why Ed likes the Bebop. It goes whoooooosh into space!

[She accompanies the woosh with a dramatic spiking of one of her hands straight up, as if breaking atmosphere.]

[And then her eyes fall back to the board. Shirley was getting aggressive with her queen, Interesting. Queens were powerful, in fact the most powerful piece on the board. But as strong as they were, you had to protect them. Ed intended to show her why, Another lesson time!]

[It was her toughest test yet. Ed slides her bishop forward as bait for her queen. If Ed's new friend takes the bishop, that will leave her queen exposed to Edward's own. Though this time she was prepared to backtrack the game if needed, this was a learning experience after all.]

Gate-y....disaster? Would you mind telling me what happened? It sounds pretty...scary. [Don't tell her that it's anything involving a tidal wave here

As she leaned back against the chair, as she sees Edward whooshing around, she eyes eventually went back to the board.

Shirley knew that the queen was powerful but she was trying to read Edward's movements. In addition, she wanted to see how well she can do in chess. Hm...maybe she was starting to get a little too overconfident here.

Shirley was starting to get worried. So far, it seemed like Ed hadn't done anything yet and that she would do it eventually. What now?

Feeling scared, she moved another one of her pawns forward. She didn't see the bishop just yet but this felt like a more safer route]

[Ed, still in teacher-mode, begins...]

It was scary, before Ed's time though. The basics of it are that when Humans went into space, it was all done by conventional forms of propulsion. Which for travel around the earth was not bad, but Space is so impossibly huge that it it would take months and months to get even to the next-closest planet.

Some scientist-y people decided to make gates. Now, gates are very specifically calibrated machines that open a path that spaceships can travel through what is called 'phase-space'. The theory goes that every 1/48th of a second our universe blinks off and on like a strobe-y light. The importance of this being that while the universe is 'off' in its place is a version of our universe that is much, much smaller. This one is about 240 times smaller then the regular one.

The gate opens a path for spaceships to enter into the phase-difference-space, allowing them to essentially travel 240 times faster then in the 'real world'. so those month-long travels become one of about half a day.

The gate disaster was the very first gate they tried to build in the orbit of the Earth's moon. Something went wrong during testing, nobody really knows what, and it blew up, taking a large chunk of the moon with it!

[Edward mimes a dramatic explosion with her hands.]

Because of it, pieces of the moon began to rain down all over the earth. Lotsa people lost their lives, and most of the rest that lived went to mars, or other planets and moons of our solar system. Some people stayed on the earth, in protected cities, underground for the most part. Ed herself is from the Earth!

[Seems like Edward has forgotten to make her next move.]

[What the...

Shirley didn't understand most of what she was trying to say but she did understand the idea behind gates and space travel]

Goodness! If it's like that, it seems like a lot of fun! I wonder if our world will never get a chance to do something like that! ...Maybe if I do go back home with my memories, I could tell other people about it.

[It wasn't very likely but hey, worth a shot right? But the moment what she heard next...

Oh.

It isn't as bad as tidal waves...but still!]

I see...that's rather sad. But it seems like they learned an important lesson from it and it hasn't happened again right? At least the people living in the planets are safe?

[And she forgotten hers too]
