010 - Mice on Venus

[Today Dhaos is up on the island for a change. The new puppies were in need of a walk, and so he had decided that it would be nice to allow them someplace new to explore. It was a bit of a surprise to find it snowing, although a fairly pleasant one.

At the moment he's sitting on a larger stone, watching the pups play. The light dusting of snow that's covered him by now doesn't seem to bother him in the least.]

[Rin had been spending a lot of time on the island since the snow came down. When he wasn't working or hanging with people at the Villa he would pop up for an hour or two just to wander around in it. It was nostalgic for him. Even if the island looked nothing like any place in True Cross, it still reminded him of all those winters he spent back home with his family, and that one time Father Fujimoto finally said something truthful about how he and Yukio came in to the world.

'The first time I met you two, it was snowing like this...'

He was lost in these thoughts, staring out at the water with his hands stuffed in his pockets, breath billowing out in little plumes, until a bark broke through.]

Eh? Hey, what're you doin' up here? Did you get lost?

[He knelt down, managing to get a hold of the puppy's collar even as she bounced about and attempted to lick his face.]

H-hey c'mon now... Iona, is it? Is your owner around here?

[She let out a high bark at that, but from where Rin was standing he couldn't see anything or anyone else. Somewhere in the distance his ears did pick up another set of barking, but damned if he could tell what direction it was coming from.]

Well you shouldn't wander out here all alone. Let's go see if we can find your owner, okay?

[Dhaos had noticed when Iona wandered off; the snow might soften sounds, but his hearing is sharp and neither pup is terribly quiet. Still, he doesn't feel terribly comfortable letting either one out of his sight for more than a few minutes. Thus by the time Rin finds Iona, Dhaos has gathered up Ico and is following the other pup's footprints.]

[Iona had tried a couple of times to get away from Rin, but the half-demon was surprisingly fast even on snow, and eventually just resorted to carrying the puppy in his arms. She squirmed like crazy, but he felt more comfortable than just letting her run ahead where he couldn't see.

He still liked the island, but there had been enough incidents there that he was weary of letting a helpless puppy go off alone before finding her owner.

Eventually though, Dhaos' distinctly tall figure was spotted in the distance, prompting Rin to wave an arm in the air. Even if it wasn't the owner, maybe that had seen someone looking for a lost dog.]

OIIII!

[It is good to see that Iona has been found so quickly, and that she is in the hands of someone he knows. Dhaos smiles slightly...

...and suddenly reappears in front of Rin.]

Ah, you found her. Thank you.

Whoa. ... forgot you could do that.

[Rin handed the barking, excited puppy over, smiling at the two of them. They were pretty damn cute, for being so noisy.]

Sooo you quit working and, what, started a pet adoption?

[He was teasing, of course, but the smirk only lasts a second before he draws a little more serious.]

How're you doin'?

[Ico yips happily at his sister, wriggling to get closer. Dhaos carefully adjusts his hold on them so they can be closer together without the risk of being dropped.]

I am well enough. My... mental health forced me to terminate my employment at Golden Victory, although a change of residence seems to have improved my condition.

Oh. Yeah. You're livin' with the blonde kid, right?

[So descriptive, Rin. He thinks for a second, knowing that he knows the emperor's name. It's just escaped his mind.]

Er-- ... Ioder?

[A small smile unconsciously creeps onto Dhaos' face at the mention of his friend.]

Yes. He was kind enough to take me in when I could no longer stay in the Ordo house. These two are his.

Right, yeah! I heard him talkin' to one of the other employees the other day. Didn't mean to eavesdrop on him but I was glad to hear you were somewhere safe.

[Rin had absolutely no idea what had happened, but he still manages to put together 'mental health' with the fact that things had happened so soon after the nightmare curse.

Even he had struggled with that one...]

[It does noone good to be confronted by the worst of their fears and self-doubt night after night, and for a mind already plagued on such a regular basis...

Well, Dhaos supposes that Rin is at least partially right: if others can keep an eye on him, knowing what happened last time, people can be alerted before the situation becomes dire.]

I agree that it is nice not to be forced to sleep in the woods again.

[Sometimes being young and less troubled does have it's perks, even if it comes with the problems of being a half-breed demon and the son of Satan on top of everything else.]

Duke seems to manage... but I'd rather have an actual house to live in myself, so I can see why you'd think that.

I have lived my fair share of time in the wilderness. It can be a comfortable existence if one does not mind the work.

[He pauses, turning to gaze out at sea.]

...But I could never bring myself to call it "home"...

... where you're at right now... it's better than that at least, right?

[Rin hoped so. Even if he didn't know Dhaos that well he didn't want him to be stuck in some unbearable situation.]

[When Ilya heard that the only place in Vatheon that got weather was the island, she got a bit disappointed. What is the holidays without snow? But then she heard about the elevator that she could use, so she hopped onto it without any hesitation. After all, it's not like she has a job right now or has to go kill off enemy Masters. Why not spend time in the presence of things she likes?

So she finds herself on the island for the first time, looking around at the unfamiliar place. The presence of snow immediately puts her at ease - it kind of reminds her of the castle she called home, and the forest around it. She could get used to this, she thinks to herself.

And then, reaching her ears are some barking sounds. Curiosity getting the better of her, the small albino girl tries to follow the sounds until she sees a large rock and two puppies, and someone sitting up on the top. She's not exactly an animal person, but it's nice to see something else appreciating playing in the snow. Walking up to the dogs, she smiles and watches them rolling around in the white for a little while before turning her attention to the person sitting on the rock.]

Are these dogs yours?

[Dhaos hadn't been expecting a child up here. Certainly there were children among the native population, but he couldn't recall ever having seen even an adult up here that was not among the "travelers." Even among those drawn into this world, he had only known of one other as young as this...

He smiles as the dogs continue rolling about without a care in the world.]

In a way. I am caring for them while my housemate is at work.

[She nods understandingly at the man's response. The puppies continue to scurry around energetically in the snow, drawing her attention to them once more. Even she has to admit that the rolling puppies are somewhat cute.]

Oh, okay. Do you know where they came from?

[Ilya hasn't seen animals like puppies around the bubble before, so she wonders whether they're rare but local or brought from abroad. Then again, she's only ever known feral animals - the ones who used to attack her when she was cast into the forest for 'training'...]

[He returns his gaze to the puppies, still smiling. Dhaos has a soft spot for children, no matter the species. They're... easier to trust than adults.]

Ioder said they came from a pet store in the city. I do not know if they were born here or elsewhere however.

Would they be born somewhere else?

[She thinks about it for a moment. Well, the puppies could have been brought to Vatheon like she was.]

And Ioder... is your housemate?

[There definitely are a lot more foreigners than she initially thought. That's alright, though - at least it means she won't be lonely.]

[He takes a moment to consider the first question.]

Perhaps, or perhaps they are descendants of those brought in from elsewhere.

And Ioder is indeed my housemate.

That makes sense, I guess.

[She nods, looking back at the puppies for a moment. Thank goodness they're puppies and not kitties - Ilya is decidedly not a cat person...]

Do you live with other people too? Or just Ioder?

[Oh, pardon her manners. Realizing her comparative lack, she gives a quick curtsy to the man on the rock.]

I'm Ilyasivel von Einzbern - but Ilya is okay.

[Tatsumi and Tsuzuki had also decided to bring their golden retriever puppy, Cinnamon, for a walk on the island today. It would soon be much to cold for them to do this often and would have to keep to the bubble.

Cinnamon spots the pups playing nearby, and he rushes over to join them, Tatsumi running after him.]

Hey! Cinnamon come back!

[Asato laughs at the scene and goes after Tatsumi, only to stop him.]

Let him do, Seiichirou. He needs to socialize more.

[Hm. The presence of a third puppy was somewhat unexpected, but not unwelcome. Puppies need to learn how to behave around other dogs early on, and this was a perfect opportunity for Iona and Ico.

That settled, Dhaos redirects his attention to the retriever's owners.]

...Hello.

Hello sir. Is our Cinnamon bothering your puppies?

[He looks over at the dogs, but so far there seems to be no problem. The puppies are just at the stage of sniffing at each other.]

Hi ! Your puppies are so cute ! How are they called ?

[Yep, he totally doesn't think about apologizing.]

["Cinnamon." ...Somewhat of a strange name for a dog, but he supposes that other worlds have different naming practices.

None of the dogs sound as if anything is amiss, and he trusts his ears as much as his eyes in this sort of matter.]

Iona and Ico do not seem to object to Cinnamon's presence.

[Tatsumi watches the puppies playing with each other. It seems Cinnamon needs some canine companions from time to time.]

If you don't mind, could we let them play together for a while? It would do Cinnamon well to spend some time with your Iona and Ico.

[No, not different naming practices, only a master who loves food too much.]

It's a good idea ! Cinnamon must feel lonely sometimes, at home.
