I always knew you'd awaken

Who: Fai and OPEN TO ALL

Fai had been running. Fear had pushed him forward and he ran until his lungs hurt in his chest. But no matter how fast he went, or how far he ran..that shadow of a man continued to follow him. When the fairy had reacted in such a way, Fai had been concerned but now..nothing but fear.

"You're dead..I saw you die.." Fai knew he was dead. Even if Kurogane hadn't done it, the world had collapsed. This man should not be here. The fear was making him forget what this world was capable of. The fact that even the dead could show up in this place. Why did Fai fear him? Wasn't this resolved? He couldn't kill him himself..this man that had watched over him and become such a monster. Perhaps he was here to make Fai finish the job..that was the absolute worst thought the vampire could have. Was this man going to kill everyone in this world that he cared about until he finally managed to end the wizard's life with his own hands?

Turning a final corner, Fai flattened his back against a wall and panted for air. He closed that golden eye and prayed for safety. When he opened that eye back up, the man that stood before him seemed so real that Fai's heart felt like it stopped in his chest, gripped by that icy hand of terror. It was being squeezed until he thought it might burst.

As Ashura approached him he let out a scream, sliding down to curl up into ball on the ground. He covered his head and just cowered..waiting for the ghost of the man he had once cared for, served under, watched murder innocent people and then encased in a tomb of ice..wanting to hide from this man that seemed to haunt him no matter what world he was on.

Johnny hadn't been home since his fight with Sola, but staying at Jacob's wasn't an option anymore....not with who had started following him; whispering cruel words with a loving tone and torturing him with thoughts he'd been trying to chase off.

He'd intended to stay away from everyone, no one else was to suffer from his own demon, but the scream drew his attention and caused him to change direction mid-flight. The bats reformed a few feet from the huddled mass against the wall and he ran to Fai's side, more focused on his friend's pain than his own fears.

"Fai!" Johnny knelt down in front of him, hands going to the blond's shoulders in an attempt to draw his attention.

Fai's entire body jerked as he was touched, his first thought being that it was Ashura. His head snapped up and he started to resist until he saw it wasn't the ghost. That gold eye stared at Johnny, terror evident. He reached out and latched onto the other vampire, his body starting to tremble.

What if Ashura tried to hurt Johnny? What would he do? He had the powers he had received from the god on his world but it would never be enough to defeat him. These thoughts raced through his mind as his he looked around frantically for the ghost.

"Johnny..it's dangerous.."

"What? What's-" He hadn't noticed at first, his only concern being Fai,but there was another man in the alley, one he'd never seen before. He could have sworn there was no one else in the alley as he'd approached..

He was about to ask who the guy was when movement beside him caught his attention and he turned to see Barry standing beside them. Between the demon and this man that seemed to be scaring Fai, Johnny pulled the other man into his arms as if that would, somehow, make him safer.

"I'll protect you Fai."

'Addie~' A shudder ran through Johnny at the sound of the bell-like voice, but his grip tightened and he turned his attention on the man he didn't know; that was easier than looking at the angelic face beside him.

"Did he do anything to you?"

"It's Ashura-ou..he..he.." He was dangerous. He had killed almost everyone on their world. He had gone crazy with power. So many things, but deep down Fai couldn't hate him and perhaps that was the worst part of it all. Fai buried his face against Johnny's chest, unable to even pretend that he wasn't scared. He could hide a lot of things with a smile or waving it off, but this time it was far too hard.

"He'll hurt everyone." It was the simplest answer. His king would kill until Fai killed him and that was something Fai absolutely could not do. Fai turned his head and noticed the other in the alley. The other was unfamiliar but somehow Fai knew that this one had followed Johnny.

"Who is he?"

'He'll hurt everyone.' That sounded far too familiar. But....Barry hadn't even touched him yet. That wasn't like him and with Fai in his arms like this and Barry not flying into a jealous, violent, rage, he has to wonder if there's something preventing him. It was the only explanation for Barry's lack of action that made sense.

"This Ashura? He can't hurt you, Fai." He brought a hand up to Fai's cheek encouraging him to look at Johnny and not the....whatever they were that were with them. "I don't know why they're here,but they won't hurt you. It's okay."

"Is this one of this world's tricks?" Fai didn't understand how this world that had been pretty kind to him up to this point..could do something this cruel. Fai looked up at Johnny, unsure what to think and unable to even look at Ashura. It made his heart ache to see that face again and brought back memories that were both good and terrible.

"How do we make them go away?" There was desperation in Fai's voice. Even if this was only a trick, Fai didn't want to spend a week being trailed by his memories.

I don't know...

He glanced at the nightmares, though his eyes barely glanced at Barry; he didn't want to admit the incubus was there. He didn't even want to tell Fai about him or even what his name was. It was as if, if he said anything out loud, it would be real.

That made him pause, however, the last time he'd been confronted with Barry was when he'd come back and realized those who were dead could arrive here. He'd had those nightmares for a month....until it had broadcasted and he'd talked to someone about it.

If these were nightmares, perhaps they ran on the same principle. Not that it brought him any comfort or wanted to talk about it, but maybe it could help Fai.

"Tell me about him. Tell me what happened between you two. Just...pretend he's not here."

Fai didn't want to talk about it. Where would he even start? All the secrets he had always held in from everyone were all wrapped around Ashura. His fingers tightened on Johnny's shirt as he tried to calm himself to think.

"He taught me everything I knew about magic after my brother died. He came to the world we were in and took me away. He was my teacher..my father figure..my king. But then one day when I returned to the castle, everyone was dead..he had killed them.."

Fai's voice broke and he shook his head. He couldn't do it. He had never explained these things before. Ashura had just shown the memories to the others.

"Shhh."

Johnny pulled Fai in close, holding him tight and petting his hair. Gently, he kissed the top of Fai's head.

"Just tell me what you can. Maybe you've never heard it before, but they say that if you talk about a nightmare, it'll go away. But you don't have to tell me all of it if you don't want to. I'm here either way."

"He should be dead..my companion..the one that is my prey..he killed him because I couldn't. What if..what if this is a sign of things to come? If my brother showed up here.." What if Ashura came and the process was repeated? There were too many fears for him to just expect for talking to help make them go away. The only thing that made him feel sure that this wasn't actually Ashura was the fact that he wouldn't have stood by and done nothing while Johnny held him.

Johnny winced internally at Fai's words, they came too close to home with what he'd been dealing with only a few months ago.

"You just can't worry about it. We can't control who comes or who goes, as much as we may want to, but I promise I'll protect you if he ever shows up. I know your friends aren't here, but I am, and I'll protect you. Don't let him control you."

He was the biggest hypocrite, he knew he was, but it was the truth and he hoped it would help Fai more than it helped him.

"No one would be able to protect us if he comes..He's too strong. The whole time I was with him, everything was a lie..He brought me there, trained me..so that I could kill him. And I couldn't do it. I didn't want him dead even despite everything he had done."

Fai never knew Ashura's true intention until that fateful day. If he had been able to kill him then their world wouldn't have been destroyed. But Fai was weak..he couldn't prevent the destruction of Celes..which was also brought on by his own misfortune of being born a twin.

"I don't care how powerful he is, I meant what I said. And you shouldn't feel bad that you couldn't kill him. Killing someone isn't easy, and it never should be. The day it's easy is the day you've stepped over a line you can't come back from."

Fai was no killer. Johnny himself would be more of a killer than Fai, and he had never found killing easy. Whatever this man had done to Fai's psyche, Johnny wanted to push it all away and protect him from it coming back.

"But it's my fault..because I couldn't do it the entire world was destroyed. Everything is always my fault.." Even though he had found out his brother's death wasn't really his fault, he had spent far too many years blaming himself for it. The curses on his body all came true before anyone could stop them. He had caused pain to everyone he had ever come in contact with and Ashura was simply a reminder of another of his failures.

Fai choked on a sob. How could he possibly expect to go along for a week with Ashura as a shadow? "I locked him away and traveled across worlds to escape him...and yet here he is before me again."

"I don't think you're to blame for anything bad that's happened here. And...you can have a different life here, things don't have to be the way they were before." Whatever had happened, whatever Fai hated himself so much for, Johnny didn't know it and it didn't matter. What mattered was the Fai in his arms, the one he cared about. He didn't care for a jynx, he cared for a vampire.

"Come this Sunday, he won't be here anymore...and It'll take some time, but then he can just go back into your memories. It's just a nightmare."

"I wonder if I can last that long.." Fai wasn't so sure. He felt emotionally exhausted but at least he had finally shared some of his past himself..instead of it being shown to people by Ashura.

"Life here might be different but I wonder how long I can enjoy it.." Fai didn't believe he deserved a different life. He had accepted the mistakes and the pain and knew that he was destined to hurt and be hurt.

Johnny finally shifted, moving to sit on the ground and pull Fai into his lap, arms wrapped just as securely as before.

"You enjoy it as long as you can and as much as you can. Don't hold back in making yourself happy here, you never know when it will end." Of course, for humans, that was normal advice, but for them, it was nothing if not true here. "And I know you can last that long because I know you're a lot stronger than you think you are. Besides, you're not alone here, there are people who will gladly keep you company and share the burden."

Fai settled against Johnny and closed his eye. At least this way he still couldn't see the nightmare. It was odd to think that the nightmare was only visible when one had their eyes open..such a reverse of the normal. But then again, this world had already broken to be anything but normal.

"You give me more credit then I deserve. No one should have to deal with my nightmares." There were just too many of them. Ashura was just the biggest.

"But thank you Johnny..I feel safer at least."

"I don't mind." And he really didn't. He would always prefer helping the people he cared about and helping them fight off their nightmares rather than face his own.

"I'm glad. I want you safe."

There was still so much Fai couldn't say. Good memories along with bad. The dreadful events of that final day of Celes..and the truth behind the name he chose to hide behind. Little pieces have been exposed over time, first with the arrival of his brother..and now this. All the lies and secrets that Fai had built up over the decades of life had started to be dissolved as the truth became necessary.

"Will he go away now? Have I said enough?"

Johnny looked over to the king, disappointed he could still see him. He just continued petting Fai's hair, perfectly content to hold him until Johnny could say yes.

"He hasn't yet...but I'll stay with you till he does. Maybe when the sun rises...the sun always drives away the nightmares."

"But that means it might come back..as soon as the sun sets again." Fai opened his eye and tilted his head up to look at Johnny. "We'll have to head back to the apartment before then, won't we? You can't just stay out here."

He shrugged. "It might. But if you're with someone when it does, it might be easier to deal with. And I don't have anything else to do, of course I can stay out here. You're my friend, I'll help you no matter what, even if that means sitting in an alley."

"I don't want to inconvenience you with my own fears.." Fai glanced at Barry and then looked back up at Johnny. "But if it means I can help you with your nightmares as well..then I'll ask you to stay with me."

"You're never an inconvenience." Johnny tensed at the mention of his nightmare and didn't say anything at first. When he did, his voice was even, almost light as though talking about something meaningless.

"It's nothing. Don't worry about it."

"You can't hide things from me, just as I can't hide from you. I know it isn't nothing even if you try to say that it is." It's a curse and a blessing that they understand each other so well.

He flinched and looked away. He knew it wasn't fair, he knew he was being childish, but a part of him didn't care. "I don't want to talk about it. It doesn't matter."

"But if it will make this easier then wouldn't it be worth it?" Fai knew that pushing want going to help but he couldn't help but want Johnny to have some relief from the nightmare.

"Don't ask. It's fine."

He was feeling antsy. Like he was being backed into a corner and it was just making him more tense.

Fai frowned. He wanted Johnny to be okay..he didn't want him to suffer. Was his secrets really worth the nightmares? But he also knew it would be hard to convince the vampire otherwise. He knew it all too well..

"Johnny please..don't be stubborn. Not about this.."

That was it. He wanted to talk to Fai, he did. But he couldn't. This...it was complicated, he didn't want to burden Fai with it. It was ridiculous!

And it hurt.

"...I'm sorry. Just go home." And in a flash, he dissolved into bats and flew out of the alley, the image of Barry vanishing with him.

It hurt to run from Fai too....but wasn't going to turn back.

And Fai wasn't going to just let Johnny go..He trailed that flock of bats. He was going to help Johnny..somehow.

Burgh could see the terrified young man ahead of him. What was going on? He'd just arrived in Vatheon a day ago and knew no one. But this boy looked like he'd seen a ghost. Or had he? He walked up to him then he heard the scream.

"Excuse me? Are you alright?"

Fai seemed to cower lower, at first believing that voice was Ashura's. It took a moment for it to sink in that it wasn't. And that meant that someone was near him..and Ashura could harm him. His head snapped up and he looked around frantically for the phantom.

"Get away! He's dangerous!"

Burgh snapped around and frowned. "What are you talking about? I can't see anything." He was worried for the boy as he couldn't see anything. "Please....what is going on?"

"Ashura-ou..Please! Don't let him hurt you!" Fai's eyes became glued to the man in the long capes standing so close by. The man he spent a good amount of time jumping from world to world and hoping to avoid in each one.

"What do you mean? Ashura-ou? Who is that?" Burgh was so confused. He span around and gasped.

Fai couldn't let someone get dragged into his mess. But Ashura wasn't going to show mercy on anyone if he started on one of his rampages. "Please..please just leave!"

Fai slowly stood up and stared at the man of his nightmares. So far the other didn't seem to want to do anything, but Fai wasn't sure he could trust it.

"Leave? Is that what you want?" Burgh wasn't sure. The man was in a lot of distress though. Perhaps it would be the better option. "If you wish me to leave then I will. If that will help...."

"I just don't want you hurt.." Fai stumbled forward so that he could put himself between Ashura and this man. "He's strong..I don't know why he is here..but he could kill everyone."

Fai's mind was starting to clear away some of the initial terror and think more clearly. As he did so he started to realize some differences between this man and the Ashura he had known..but he just can't be sure of anything.
