Who: Eridan and Karkat

[So, it certainly had been a while since Eridan mentioned the idea of Karkat and himself spending a day together, since Valentine's Day was ruined by a certain pink haired psychopath. With not much mention happening of it since then, and Karkat's day with Gamzee long since past, Eridan feels it's about time to bring it up and maybe even use this day for it. It'd be perfect, not much is going on and they've just been lazying around the hive anyways. With this very thing in mind, Eridan had actually gone out earlier, getting a small gift to give Karkat for the this very occasion! He wants this to be perfect after all, with how much of a let down he was with that whole fiasco.]

[Making his way to the living room, where Karkat is currently seated watching something or other on the TEE.WEE. Eridan quickly strides in front of it, looking down at Karkat with an almost sly smile on his face, but at the same time there's something soft and warm about it. It's almost as if Eridan's face can hardly make an expression without it still being infected by his general smugness, but oh well. He remains silent though, a hand behind his back, hiding the box of chocolates he got specifically for his sweets-loving matesprit.]

[A Monday evening brings little of import. Karkat has been sitting and watching television for no more reason that it's something to do, not even particularly engrossed in whatever program it is that's broadcasting. ~~It's not like it's one of their soap operas.~~ In short, he is unconcerned, and not overtly busy.]

[It's not that he's forgotten about their idea to have a day together, either. He certainly has devoted plenty of thought to it, particularly in consideration of days coming up - the five month marker for them, the ten month marker for him and Equius. He just isn't expecting much today in particular.]

[That's why when Eridan strolls up in front of the TV screen, smiling down with that odd mixture of smugness and warmth, Karkat raises an eyebrow.]

You can just say something if you want my attention, you know.

I know.

[He says this rather quickly, but he doesn't sound irritated or anything, just, this is Eridan and merely saying something to get Karkat's attention is far too normal for him to do. Come on Karkat, you should know this by now.]

But anyway, I was thinkin' about, well, y'know... That day we said we were gonna hawe to ourselwes an' since we'we not been up to much all night, I figure we could maybe do take tonight an' do it.

[Karkat perks up at that idea, second eyebrow joining the first in a look of pleasant surprise.]

Tonight? Kind of unplanned that way, but sure, if you want to. It is getting near the end of the month so we might as well instead of pushing it off procrastination cliff. Scoot over a sec, would you?

[He grabs the remote off the coffee table, and trying to angle it to compensate for Eridan's position, he goes to turn the TV off.]

Well why not? It isn't like we're doin' much a anythin' anyway!

[But he does move out of the way by plopping down next to Karkat, the box still kept from view, but only for a moment before he shoves it in front of the other, his smile widening as he watches him.]

And... since I wasn't exactly able to get ya anythin' for Walentine's day, I figured I should rightly make up for it, so here.

That's why I said it's fine, Eridan.

[TV off, he sets the remote back down at his matesprit goes to take a seat. Before he can really ask what he has in mind, though, he finds the box shoved at him.]

[Blink.]

[Well, fitting, with that explanation there. He takes it into his hands and opens it carefully to see the contents... Chocolates. His expression softens, fond, as he peeks back up at him.]

Thanks. But wait here a minute, there was something I was going to give you then that I didn't get the chance to.

[He puts the box on the table too, then if Eridan will let him go, he gets up to head for his respiteblock.]

And close your eyes! I didn't have time to wrap it or anything.

[Eridan smiles as he notices that softness in his expression, almost hoping for a kiss or something in gratitude--because Eridan always thinks he should get a kiss because he's a kiss hog, but then Karkat's getting up and getting something for him. He stares at him, owl eyed.]

Uh, alright.

[So then he does just that, waiting silently with both eyes closed.]

[After a little time to retrieve the gift - he didn't just put it somewhere Eridan could stumble upon by accident - Karkat makes his way back to the living room. It's nothing big, not fancy, not like their last holiday together, but there's still feeling put into it. At first he keeps it behind his own back on the off chance Eridan wouldn't keep his eyes closed, but that worry is unneeded. Good that he listened.]

[He presses the object into his hands, then sits. It should feel distinctly like a book, because it is a book: it's a romance novel focused around some naval captain. Not that those can't be found easy around here, but this is a troll one, searched out from GrubMart and bought for him.]

Go ahead and look.

[When the book gets pressed into his hands, his eyebrows twitch upward as he grows even more curious at the feel, that sure is a book! When Karkat tells him to go ahead, his eyes snap open and he stares at it. Reading over the title, long things they are, before looking to Karkat with a genuine smile. It's been a while since he's gotten himself a new book, so this is greatly appreciated.]

Shit, thanks Kar.

[He sets it down on the table next to the chocolates before he lovingly throws his arms around Karkat in a nearly dramatic affectionate manner before laying a kiss on the other's lips.]

[Of course Eridan would pick a manner like that to do it in. Karkat would roll his eyes were he not preoccupied with the fact that he's being kissed now. But really, he is pleased he liked the gift; and with the day being dedicated as it is, he allows the gesture. His own warm lips press back against the cooler ones, arms coming up to embrace his matesprit.]

[It's a good thing he's allowing it because Eridan would have complained. It's always such an odd sensation feeling those lips against his, of course odd in a great way, just the contrasting warmth to his cool always feels so distinct and he loves it, ever bit of it. His own arms holding the other close as he presses more into it, god how he pities this troll in his arms and how he just wants to show him today just how much he really does.]

[The coolness is something usual for him. Anyone would be, really, but his two concupiscent quadrantmates especially with their spots on the hemospectrum. Blue and purple. Though he still takes interest in the distinction between the two, Eridan ever colder than Equius, to say nothing of the obvious difference in sentiment and style. This now is gentle and easy, lips working soft, fangs out of the way. He wants to answer that pity with his own.]

[Eridan's hold tightens slightly, pressing more into the kiss, still a gentle act, but in it there's a neediness. Even after all this time together, he still feels so needy and almost desperate, so wanting of the other, as if he can't properly get his affections across right, so he has to try harder. To Karkat, it might just seem like he's over zealous in his kissing, but Eridan knows different. Knows himself and knows his worries, but today isn't a day for that, today is a day to celebrate and relish in the pity they have, not for him to be some chum with self doubts.]

[After a moment or two longer of enjoying the kiss, he breaks it, letting the distant between them not grow too much, but enough that he can suck in a needed breath after the few long moments of kissing between them. He offers a soft smile to Karkat, one he really only allows when it's the two of them, when he isn't trying to dress himself up in his dramatic persona, a side he really only allows the other to see, especially in a situation like this.]

I really pity you, y'know?

[It's really not a question. It's a statement, feelings he doesn't always get across to the troll, or so he feels.]

[Things like this are what he appreciates so much. Eridan may be enthusiastic in his expression of sentiment, and once Karkat would have been more nervous and finicky over such a thing. But it's been a long time since he first became involved in a flushed romance, and the time of that, and the time together between them, has eased him into the idea. Now he can take the sentiment easily, and it helps that it's just the two of them here. There's no frustration of mind games and holding back with how openly and wholeheartedly Eridan throws himself into this.]

[His return is perhaps not so energetic, but still heartfelt. His hands curl in the back of his shirt to hold him there for as long as it lasts. Even when it's over the sentiment doesn't vanish: he knows that smile, and he's seen plenty enough of his matesprit to know it isn't one he just throws around.]

[His gaze drops a little, shyly, corners of his mouth edging up with the words.]

Yeah, I do.

[Then he glances up.]

I pity you too.

[It's so reassuring to hear that, that through all his fuck ups and mistakes and despite how Karkat has seen him at his worst--he cares, he pities him, he hasn't abandoned him. He isn't alone. That thought, no matter how true it's been for almost a year now(Starinf as moirallegiance), still seems so odd, so misplaced, but in it's oddity it's such a comfort, no matter how foreign. He gives Karkat another peck on the lips, quick, but sweet in its endeavor.]

Anyways...

[He continues to smile at Karkat, watching him with an expression thats so full of warmth and pity.]

As much as I lowe holdin' ya in my arms, we certainly won't be gettin' far if we keep up just longin'ly starin' at each other like some pity-struck fools.

[Who cares if they basically ARE that. Whatever whatever!]

So, shall we get goin'?

[He himself is making no effort to move, though.]

[Karkat allows that too. It's good to be appreciated on his side, too, for he certainly has had his own screwups and failures. He's the one who couldn't defend himself or their hive sufficiently, and if not for that, Eridan would never have had to be falsely implicated in his murder. He feels weak enough that he died then. But when here, they can have these moments like this, or days set for such a purpose... it's very comforting, to know that he receives not disgust, but genuine pity.]

[Reluctantly, he pulls his arms away from him - then prods him in the shoulder.]

You're going to have move too, doofus. Come on, up.

Fine.

[But he's so comfortable, Karkat!]

[But really, after one last tight squeeze, he does let him go. Getting up off the couch himself, he starts to head towards their front door, pausing briefly to look back at his matesprit.]

Bring those chocolates, too.

[A gesture towards them as he speaks. He didn't just buy those for Karkat to eat whenever, oh no, he's got plans for them.]

[Karkat goes to follow after him once he's up, standing and heading doorwards until his words catch him short.]

The chocolates?

[He glances to the table where he set them, then to his matesprit again, eyebrow quirking. But alright, say his actions, as he backs up to snatch them into his sylladex.]

Where are we going?

Yes them.

[He answers quickly enough, watching him take the chocolates like he asked, but then when he asks the second question, he just shrugs, acting like he hasn't a clue.]

We'll just hawe to figure that out, now won't we?

[Either way, he's finishing his way to the front door, opening it and--letting Karkat go through first. SO POLITE AMIRITE?]

[Karkat gives him another look, dubious in the set of eyebrows, but he's going along anyway. If he really has no idea, he'll call him on it sooner or later, but he wants to at least give him the chance to pull something romantic. Call it being charitable. Or foolish hope in the prince of it, who knows yet.]

[As he steps through the door, he doesn't hold back from saying:]

This better be good or you're going to seriously owe me, you know.

It will be, hawe a little faith in me will ya?

[Though, with that, he closes the door behind them and starts on his way, but not before catching Karkat's hand in his, fingers aiming to lace between those of the smaller troll's.]

[Karkat predictable grumbles a bit at Eridan taking his hand, but doesn't actually resist or pull away.]

Sappy dipshit. And you better handle it all the better, then, if you are actively taking my faith into your prongs. It will strengthen or weaken by your actions, and each foolish act you take will by increments pull it taught and tenuous until it threatens to shatter entirely.

[Isn't that reassuring?]

Lead the way.

[To be honest, he's used to this overdramatic stuff, so if anything he just gives Karkat's hand a little squeeze, as if that in itself will shut him up, but he knows better than to think that.]

Yeah, well, I'm done lettin' you down either way, so don't be too surprised when I pull through for ya.

[But he does indeed lead the way, their night together is going to be a great one and he's set on that! So first things first: dinner. It's only right he takes him out for something nice to eat after all. Karkat deserves to be treated like a king--at least Eridan thinks so, anyways.]

I gotta say, I'm glad you're lettin' me hold your hand like this. [It's a simple statement really, just a small sign of gratitude towards something that Karkat usually is pretty shy about. He glances at him, a smile on his face, while giving Karkat's hand a loving squeeze.]

[The hand squeeze indeed does jack shit to shut him up.]

[Instead, it's his words that do so. Done letting him down--those are important words, with a heavy weight to them, and they wipe the attitude from his face to allow for something more pensive. He follows quietly, for a time, up until Eridan makes his next remark.]

I don't blame you for what happened to me, Eridan.

[He tightens his hand on his. He meant what he said, and he wants him to pay attention to it.]

[Eridan stops at those words, and he considers looking at Karkat, but doesn't.]

... I know.

[It's a casual remark, simplifying the heaviness of the subject, trying to brush it off almost. Karkat might not blame him, sure, but that doesn't say much for how he regards what happened.]

[If he won't look, then Karkat will, stepping around him so that they face each other.]

I mean it, alright? You're not the one who aggravated her, or the reason she's a crazy, psychopathic, murderous bitch. You didn't--use that knife, you didn't make me lose, and I wouldn't want you being the one to get attacked in the first place.

[He adds his second hand to the first, trying to catch his matesprit's eyes with a beseeching sort of look.]
