Ruca was waiting in the park for Rin to arrive. Strapped to the silver-haired boy's back was a heavy broadsword, that usually was just lying in the corner of his room. Ever since Ruca was brought to Vatheon, he didn't had much use for it. But today was a bit different. He was going to spar with Rin... and to tell the truth, Ruca was a bit worried about how this will go. IBut in the end he thought that it probably was going to be okay. Sparring wasn't a real battle, after all.

Rin wasn't too much longer after Ruca arrived, wandering in to the park with his sword in it's red case, slung over his shoulder. He didn't go anywhere without if he could help it, and today was a good day to actually get some use out of the Kurikara.

He spotted the smaller boy in the park easily, the sword on his back the first thing he saw.

"'ey," he said as he approached, lifting a hand in greeting.

Hearing the voice, Ruca turned to face Rin and smiled a little at him.

"Hey." he said. "Um, so.."

Ah, so what now? Are they going to start the spar right away? Well, that was what they came here for...

Rin smiled back, though it was awkward. The last time he'd seen Ruca face to face he was soaking wet, in his PJs and raging at the world for getting stuck in Vatheon in the first place. He was surprised the boy wanted to be friends with him after all that.

"... guess... I'm ready whenever you are."

It wasn't like there was anything else they could do. They were there to spar after all.

Oh, but Ruca could understand Rin's rage. It's not every day you end up in a different world, right? Besides, seeing that Ruca could be friends with people like Iria or Spada, who bullied him half of the time, it really wasn't surprising that he would want to be friends with Rin.

"...I'm ready." he said, taking his sword out and preparing to fight.

At least some one was capable of sympathizing with him. It wasn't easy, starting out as an outcast and just getting progressively more outsider from there.

"Alright," he nodded, slipping the carrying case off his sword. A hesitation had his hand over the hilt before he grabbed it and removed the blade. Blue flames rippled over the sword and appeared over his body.

He held the blade out, pointing the tip at Ruca, waiting for him to make the first move.

Ruca observed Rin carefully. Those blue flames... it would probably be best to avoid them, just in case.

But Ruca wasn't going to make the first move. He didn't know what he could except or how the other fought, so he decided to wait. Since, to him, Rin didn't seem like a type of person that could wait for too long, Ruca hoped the other would attack first.

Rin was going to try to keep the contained as much as possible, but chances were it wouldn't last long once the fight actually got started.

But Ruca had one thing right - Rin was impatient. Waiting for him only lasted a few seconds more before he finally gave up and charged forward, swinging the flame-covered blade down at the other boy.

So Ruca was right.

The moment Rin attacked, Ruca blocked the hit with his sword. He eyed the flames, that were now so close to him. His eyes narrowed, then making a use of his strange he tried to push Rin back.

Rin may have been impatient and rather untrained, but he was strong if nothing else. Ruca pushing him back didn't gain much ground, but eventually Rin realized he wasn't going to get anywhere like that either. He jumped back, swinging again as soon as he was clear of Ruca's sword.

This time Ruca tried to dodge and then attack. Putting a lot more power into the attack than before however, realizing that Rin is much stronger than Ruca originally thought.

Which was both worrying and relieving at the same time.

Rin was stronger than he looked, but that wasn't necessarily an advantage when he didn't have much else going for him in the way of battle tactics and the like. Really, he was just sort of swinging and hoping to hit something.

Shura did say he didn't so much fight with a sword as he failed with it.

Dodging Ruca's attack on the other hand... was not a easy. He turned, just barely missing the blade coming down on his shoulder, but the edge still came far too close for comfort and he stumbled back awkwardly.

Damn.

When Rin stumbles back, Ruca used this as an opportunity to attack again. This time however, it was not a normal attack, but an arte. Nothing too strong though. Just a very basic one.

"Demon Fang!" Ruca swung his sword, launching a shockwave along the ground. He hoped this would both surprise Rin and force him to back further away.

"Whoa!"

Okay, that was not something Rin was expecting. At all. It was like something Shura or Angel would do, and only Shura had ever directed one of those at him.

And he really didn't know how to block it or counter it either.

The shock wave didn't just force him back, it knocked him down purely out of how unexpected it was. Probably not what Ruca had in mind, but an opening was an opening, and Rin's weapon was still in his hand despite being thrown.

Definitely not what Ruca had in mind. For a short moment he looked worried and almost about to start apologizing for this, but he mentally stopped himself from doing so. In the end he decided he wouldn't try to use something like that again.

Seeing as Rin was still holding his sword, Ruca rushed forward, aiming a powerful hit at Rin's weapon, so he would hopefully let go of it.

Rin blocked the swing quickly, pushing Ruca's sword back.

"How'd you do that... ?" he asked, grunting a bit as he kept the blade away from his head. As much as he wanted to keep sparing, what Ruca had done had left him curious.

Ruca frowned slightly.

"It was an arte." he replied simply. "Some... people from my world are able to use them." And Ruca is one of them obviously.

"An arte?"

First he'd ever heard of it. Still...

"That was pretty cool," Rin said with a faint smirk.

Because giving compliments in the middle of a sparring match is also cool, apparently.

"T-thanks..." Ruca replies, not sure how he should take the praise. "But, um, that one was really weak... actually..."

So, really, there was nothing to be so impressed about.

"Still better than anything I can do."

But they were still sparing, and Rin wasn't about to let getting knocked down go so easily. Maybe it was a cheap shot, but he used the distraction to sweep his leg at Ruca's feet.

"Ah!"

Ruca didn't except that and thanks to his slow reflexes, as well as the heavy sword he hit the ground rather painfully.

"...Ouch."

Rin got to his feet with a chuckle, holding a hand out for Ruca.

"Sorry. You okay?"

He took the other's hand.

"Don't worry about that. I-I'm fine..." he smiles awkwardly. "...I think."

"You sure?" Rin asked, looking him over. He would feel bad if he'd actually managed to hurt the other boy. Getting in to fist fights with punks like Reiji long before he'd ever started his training often meant he really didn't fight fair.

Ruca smiled.

"I'm sure. I just... didn't except you to do that..." he admitted. Still, a fight was a fight so he probably should had expected everything.

"Well, I didn't expect that... art thing you did, so uh... call it even?" Rin offered, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly. "I've never been very good at this sparin' stuff anyway..."

"But you had your flames, too." Ruca had to point that out. "It's okay... I never really got to spar much with anyone."

All his battles were serious battles.

Same for Rin, mostly. It seemed he really only got to fight when it counted for something, save for what little training he did do with Shura.

"Yeah well... I can't control 'em the way you did that... art thing."

And yes, Ruca, he's going to keep calling it that.

"It's called devic artes... and I think that if practiced controlling your powers, it would help."

Maybe. He wasn't exactly sure himself, since he never had to practice at all. Everything he knew was thanks to Asura's memories.

"Devic Arts? Huh... well, I stand by what I said. It was pretty cool. Kinda reminded me of what one of my brothers can do. ... way less destructive, though."

And Ruca wasn't as creepy as Amaimon.

"I've been trying to learn how to control it..."

It wasn't easy, though, that was for sure.

"Well, like I said that was a very basic one... other are much more dangerous..."

Like Explosion or Razing Phoenix.

Ruca made a thoughtful look.

"What have you been doing to learn to control it?"

"My last teacher had me focusing on lighting candles..." Rin explained, holding up three fingers, and then putting his middle finger down. "Could only light two of the three. I lost control and got pissed more times than I can count."

Even took off Shura and Yukio's clothes on accident at one point. Oops.

Rin really was impenitent, wasn't he?

"But that sounds like a good training... Though, I suppose it might be a bit frustrating..."

Very.

"I barely got it before I had to go save my friends from Da-- ..."

Awkward cough.

"Satan. .. and I'm still not that good at it. Sometimes I still melt the stupid candles."

Ruca didn't know who "Satan" was, so he was neither surprised nor asking any question about that.

"I see... But you made it once, right? Maybe you should try to remember what you'd done that allowed you to control your power?"

Maybe it was because his friends were in danger?

Even if Ruca didn't know, he really didn't want to get in to how his real father was the same one responsible for nearly destroying True Cross City. That was just... uncomfortable.

"I'unno... I remember thinking that everyone kept calling them "Satan's flames" but that I didn't want 'em to be, yehknow? I'd rather claim them for myself, not rely on a force like that for power or whatever."

At this point Ruca was getting a feeling he can guess who that "Satan" actually is.

"...You don't think like that anymore?"

It was kind of hard to hide it, really. He got his powers from his real father, after all.

"More or less," he shrugged a shoulder, glancing away. "I still have moments, yehknow... ? Spent too much of my life doubting myself to change that habit now."

Ruca made a thoughtful look. He really wasn't the one who could help in that case.

"...I'm sorry. I wish I could do something to help."

Rin didn't really know who could help here.

"Eh. Don't worry 'bout it."

For a moment Ruca is silent.

"Do you want to... spar again... someday?"

Maybe it was enough for today.

"Huh? Oh, yeah! Sure."

Rin grinned, sheathing his sword and dousing his flames, pointing the end of it at Ruca.

"Next time I might surprise you!"

Ruca smiled.

"In that case, I might surprise you, too."

"I look forward to it, Ruca."
