The two monsters seem to just mold and stretch out of the way of Dhaos's attack, but they get hit by a glancing blow just as Maka declares that they should hit the one on the left.

And now there's four, making two on the left.

They seem to realize Maka has identified them, so they target her first, the pair not formed the left creature rushing to bear down upon her while the second one on the left targets Dhaos, effectively guarding the true version of the monster.
