Fishy Fishy Fishy Oh!

[ The flicker of the lantern lights was casting enough of a glow over the beach on the island to see by. Sophie didn't mind the darkness, and she wasn't sure why so many other people did. But with her tonight was her dear friend and not!dad Asbel. Sophie herself had intended to show him what she learned from Ryu, though not...actually..having fishing gear was putting a bit of a bump in that plan. No matter, she could catch them by hand too! Eventually.

But for now, she was crouched at the edge of the water, watching the fish dart to and fro beneath the surface, before she turned to the elder boy. ]

Asbel?

[Asbel was busy readying the fishing equipment. Nets, bait and rods. It had been a long time since he'd gone fishing. He'd learnt the skill from his father and continued it under Malik's tutelage when they'd done wilderness training.

Being up here under an actual sky, and being able to see the ocean instead of being under it, reminded him of home. Of Lhant.

He'd gone all out when Sophie had suggested the trip. Asbel was kind of excited about teaching her to fish.]

What is it Sophie?

[ She pokes a finger into the water, watching a fish dart away in alarm. ]

How come the fish don't drown? There isn't any air underwater.

Uh?

[Asbel paused to consider the question.]

Well you see... That's because fish don't have noses!

They don't? [ Abruptly, she leans forward and dunks her head under water for a few minutes. Apparently trying to see for herself if they really don't have noses. She surfaces a few seconds later. ]

How come they don't have noses?

[Asbel stumbles over to her in a panic.]

Sophie! Don't do that, you could drown!

[ Sophie shakes her head a few times, her head now dripping wet. She uses her arm to wipe at her face, blinking strangely at Asbel. ]

But I wanted to see why the fish didn't have noses.

[Asbel takes a towel from the supply bag and begins drying Sophie's hair with it. He undoes her twin tails so it's more comfortable for her.]

Well Sophie, remember when I said fish don't have noses so they can't drown? It's because they have stuff on their necks called gills.

It's kind of like an underwater nose that lets them breath water instead of air.

[ Sophie sits still patiently, her hair hanging heavy against her back since it was wet, while Asbel toweled her hair. ]

Gills? [ She thinks about this. ]

So gills make fish able to breath under the water.

But Asbel, we're under the water too, when we go back to the others. Do we have gills too? Is that how come we can breathe the air under the water?

That's a good question.

[Was it possible that they had gills while they were in Vatheon and he hadn't noticed?

No that couldn't be right.]

I don't think so though. Vatheon has a bubble around it and bubbles have air inside them.

And we also don't get wet like this when we're in Vatheon.

[He added with a grin, continuing to dry Sophie's hair.]

Oh. [ Hrm. She's silent a moment, staring at the fish in the water. Something is clearly on her mind, but... ]

Asbel?

[He wonders if what he said makes sense now that he's thinking about it again. From his place sitting behind Sophie, he can't see her expression.]

Yeah?

[ Asbel is the first person she met when she woke from the flower meadow. It's only natural that he would be the first person she would ask. ]

What happened after I died?

[Asbel paused. The question caught him off guard. He knew that Sophie might ask about it eventually, he just had no idea how to answer her.]

Sophie... A lot of things changed.

Is there a reason you want to know?

You mean, you, Cheria and Hubert, and Richard got big...?

[ And Richard doesn't like her anymore. That's why -- ]

A reason? I don't know. I remember some of what happened, but not while I was dead. I feel like I missed a lot of things, and sometimes my head hurts.

Yeah, we all got big...

[It kind of hurts to hear her talk like that. He turned Sophie to face him.]

You don't have to force yourself to remember okay?

I didn't see Richard again since that night. Hubert was sent away to Strata and I ran away from home to train to become a knight. That's how I met Captain Malik.

[He wears a sad smile when he talks about it. Sometimes it felt like it was another life.]

But I should remember... but I don't want to. It hurts and... I feel like it's important to remember.

Why was he sent away? Did you have a fight? [ She frowns a bit - brothers aren't supposed to fight, right? Although she knew Asbel had argued with his father a few times before. ]

Don't rush it okay? It'll come to you if you let it.

No Sophie, we didn't fight... My dad sent Hubert away to live with another family.

[He still didn't understand that himself.]

I... I don't know why.

... okay.

You left home too. Did your father send you away?

No, Sophie... I... Ran away from Lhant.

[That's something hard to admit to.]

[ She's silent for a few minutes, because her memories were still a little fuzzy about back then. ]

Oh. I'm sorry, Asbel.

[Asbel smiled and patted Sophie's head gently.]

You don't have to apologize, Sophie. It wasn't your fault...

[He was the only one responsible for everything that happened.]

Sophie, if you ever feel like you have to leave home for something important and even if I might not agree... You can still talk to me about it, okay?

[ As always, Sophie watched Asbel seriously when he patted her on the head. ]

You won't be mad?

[ It's a hypothetical question for a hypothetical situation. ]

[He wondered what his parents must have gone through when he left.]

No, of course not. I think I'd be sad if you just left without telling me.

[ She thinks about it for a moment. ]

Okay Asbel. I'll tell you if I go away.
