Who: Some Destiny Island Keybrats (Kairi, Riku, Sora)
What: The weather is warmer, and that means it's time to leave the bubble. Sora had something to talk to Kairi about, and some time later, Riku and Kairi happen to discover they had the same idea and decide to walk on the beach for a while.
When: 6/17/2013
Where: The beach on the island.
Style: Action

[Without any other obligations -- other than the care of certain boisterous pets -- to take up his time, Riku had ample time to devote to some of what he enjoys best. Aside from the company of his friends, that meant indulging in that wanderlust, drinking in all the new sights of Vatheon. However, upon discovery of the lift that led him to the island above, his visits to the long strands of sandy beach became a nearly daily endeavor.

It's during one such trip that he glimpses someone familiar in the crowd milling through Vatheon's streets.

Really, migrating out of his way to then lean casually against a wall as if he was just killing time waiting around for her? Not really necessary, but Riku's always been a little keen on a good image. And so there he is, just loitering, lifting a hand with one drooping half-sleeve from where his arms are folded across his chest.]

[The beach was a comforting place. No matter what world she was in, the beach always reminded her of home. And in a place like Vatheon, where she couldn't just hop on a gummi ship or into a portal of darkness to get home, it was a welcome part of it.

Today, she's indulging in an old pastime: collecting seashells. She's gotten a few neat looking ones in one hand, leaving the other free to scoop them up as needed as she walks along the shoreline.]

[ Sora was panting a bit as he ran across the beach in search of Kairi. He'd had to ask around a bit, but eventually someone was able to tell him where the red-headed girl had gone. He'd waited impatiently for the lift and once it reached the top he'd taken off like a shot in search of the girl.

[ He'd wasted too much time on this. ]

Kairi!

[ He slowed to a stop and placed his hands on his knees to catch a quick breath and collect himself. His heart was pounding in his chest, but it wasn't the run that had done it. ]

I needed to talk to you.

[Hurried footsteps on the sand alert her to Sora before his voice does. She turns, seashells in hand, and waves to him with her free hand.]

Okay. Walk with me.

[Walk and talk. Well, once Sora caught his breath. She'll wait until he does before she starts moving again.]

I'm collecting seashells, like we used to back home when we were younger. You remember?

[ Sora straightened after a bit and nodded with a smile on his face. ]

Yeah, I used to do it for a bit when I was alone here.

[ He started walking slowly keeping his eyes on the sand in search of shells. ]

I made a set for Roxas for his birthday. [ Or was it Christmas? ]

Did he like it? [Kairi doesn't really know Roxas well yet, so she can't know for sure.]

[ Sora nodded. ]

Yup! There was a curse where people were stealing other's stuff because they wanted it. I had my own that I'd made and Roxas took it.

[ Sora laughed. Roxas had taken his hoodie too, but Sora hadn't really minded. He'd been asleep at the time anyway, so it's not as if he'd been able to say no. ]

Are all the curses here that awful? The last one was kind of ridiculous, too.

[Though she supposed they could be much, much worse.]

[ Sora laughed lightly. He reached down to pick up a shell and hand it to Kairi. ]

Not all of them.

Some aren't so bad.

That's good. I mean, they seem like they can be kind of silly, but I wasn't sure.

[She smiles in thanks as she takes the shell from him. It's a very pretty one: he always had a good eye for seashells.]

Anyway, what did you want to talk about?

[ A flush rose up on Sora's cheeks. He shoved his hand into his pockets for a moment before taking them back out as he couldn't properly fidget that way. ]

Well, um...

[ Okay there was his heart going off like a jackhammer again. He stopped walking and turned to look at Kairi. ]

Kairi...we've been friends for a long time right?

[Oh.... this was going to be a doozy, wasn't it? It always was when conversations started off with that line.]

About ten years now, right? What is it?

Well, you see...

[ Oh man how did he say this? Sora started gesturing with his hands. ]

When two friends know each other for a long time...

[ Wait! What was he saying? He was starting to sound like some sort of talk about the birds and the bees! ]

No! Um, what I mean is...ah...

...Sora?

[What she was expecting him to say, she didn't know, but it wasn't anything like he was saying now. Worried, she frowned and stepped in front of him.]

[ Nope that didn't help. ]

Ah! What I mean is...!

[ Sora flailed a bit before rubbing the back of his head awkwardly. The blush on his cheeks was quite obvious and he bit his lip for a moment before finally just coming out and saying.... ]

Ngh...I like you, Kairi!

As...as more than a friend...Riku too.

[ Oh sweet light he'd said it. ]

[Okay. So. Kairi's heard a lot of unexpected and rather life-changing things in the past couple years. Par for the course when your two best friends are out to save all the worlds, and you get pulled along into it. And she's handled all the information well, taking it in stride. It's a testament to her resilience.

But this news bomb has left her completely shocked and tongue tied. For a long, long moment, she just... stares at Sora blankly, trying to register what he just said.

It's not bad news. Not at all. She's felt the same way about Sora for some time, and a part of her is ecstatic to know he feels the same. It's mostly the "Riku too" bit that she's trying to wrap her head around.

Kairi isn't a judgmental person. It's not that she thinks it's weird that Sora likes a boy. It's not even that he likes two people at once. What she's getting caught up on is how to proceed.

And realizing that, she finally finds the words to speak.]

Both of us? How would... how would that work, you think?

[ She didn't say no. Okay it wasn't a yes either, but it wasn't flat out disgust or something at the idea. That had Sora relieved and he visibly sagged for a moment as if a weight went off his shoulders.

Then the full extent of Kairi's words his and Sora didn't know what to say. ]

Well...I guess if Riku wanted um...

[ A blush rose up on Sora's cheeks again. ]

We could all date each other...

[ Wow that sounded weird coming out of his mouth, and selfish but what other solution was there? Sora didn't know what else to do, but then there was the other problem.... ]

I...I'm not sure Riku really feels the same though so...

[ Ugh this was a huge mess wasn't it. ]

[Polygamy. Or something like that. Kairi's heard of it, but to ever have thought she would actually consider it... Again, not a bad thing, and she doesn't have a biased bone in her body, but it's strange to think on all of the ways her life has changed in just a couple of years.

Sora does raise one good point, and it also answers a question Kairi had been wondering; mainly, if he had told Riku yet, which obviously he hadn't. But there was another problem.]

Well, you won't know with Riku until you tell him. But, Sora... I don't like Riku in that way. I... want to be with you. I do. And, if you being with Riku as well makes you happy, then I think I'll be okay with that. But I don't think I could force myself to be with him, too, and vice versa. What Riku's feelings are towards both of us... no, I don't know the full extent, and maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think he feels that way towards me, either.

[ Sora frowned a little and looked out across the water. He wasn't sure this was going the way he wanted at all. Somehow asking both of them to do this if Kairi didn't feel like that about Riku just didn't seem right. It wasn't the way Rin made it sound, and it made Sora feel even more selfish for even considering it. He hadn't really enjoyed the honesty curse while it was there, but he found himself wishing for it now. It'd been easier then to just spit out what he was thinking even when they were thoughts that troubled him.

Sora had never really had this problem before and he found it tiring. Were relationships supposed to be this much stress? ]

Riku...Riku knows I like him.

[ A blush rose on Sora's cheeks. ]

I've told him twice now. Once before he left, right before you came, and then after when he got back.

[ Sora looked down then staring at the waves as they came up onto the beach. ]

That's why I don't think he really feels the same.

Neither of us wants to be apart from the other but...[ Sora put a hand up over his chest. ]

It's a different feeling. I don't really know how to explain it, but I can't stand the thought of being apart from either of you and...

[ And if Sora didn't do something they'd both get taken away.

He let out a sigh then. Man that really did sound selfish when he thought it. This was all wrong, he shouldn't have brought it up. ]

Kairi I can't ask you to do something you wont be okay with and...

[ Sora shook his head. He felt like his brain was going to explode from all the thoughts spinning in his head. ]

What did he say, exactly?

[There was no point in getting their heads spinning just yet. If Riku truly didn't reciprocate, then there was nothing they could do about it. Kairi would be with him, if Sora chose, and he and Riku would remain friends. The less complicated possibility, and almost the most desirable one, except it would hurt Sora.]

Just that he'd think about it.

[ Which wasn't really a no, but it wasn't a yes either. Sure maybe the last incarnation of Riku had kissed him, briefly, just to see what might happen, but maybe Sora was the only one who felt that spark then. What if Riku hadn't? It wasn't as if Sora had gotten the chance to really say something else about it other than he didn't want to leave him ever.

Then Riku left. Now he was back and it was the same thing again. Maybe Riku just didn't feel the same way Sora did and he'd just have to deal with that and stop trying to be selfish about all this. ]

[Ugh, Riku. Why did he have to be so non-committal?]

Do you want me to talk to him? I don't think we're going to be able to decide what to do next until we talk to him and see what he has to say.

[ Because it's Riku. ]

I don't know how that would help...

[ Except for the obvious reason that maybe Kairi could make him admit to something but that still left a really big problem. ]

Kairi...I...I don't want to pull you into anything weird.

[ Too late. ]

I might be able to get him to open up. It's easier confiding in someone else about that sort of thing, you know?

[Sora, you do not listen, do you.]

Sora. We've been friends for a long time. And, I've been hoping you felt the same for a long time. I really have. [In a rather bold gesture, she takes his hands in hers, letting the seashells drop.] I want to be happy. And I want you to be happy. And if that means being with both me and Riku, I'm okay with that. It's not like I don't know Riku, or don't trust him.

[ Sora's eyes widened in surprise. Yeah he'd heard what Kairi had said, but it wasn't real until she took his hands. A blush went straight over Sora's face and he held Kairi's hands gently in his own grasp. ]

Kairi...

[ This was why he cared about her so much. She had a heart as big as his own and he was drawn to it just as much as she was to him. A smile crept across his face and he shortened the distance even more between the two of them. ]

Then...let's start with this, okay?

[ Sora's heart started pounding and he couldn't believe he was about to try and do what he was about to do. He leaned in, intending to kiss Kairi's lightly on the lips. ]

[Her words had finally sunk in, it seemed. That surprise, and then that smile... One to match it bloomed across her face, only to be quickly replaced by surprise when he moved in closer.]

Oh-

[A kiss wasn't what she had been expecting. Held hands, smiles... maybe even a hug. Considering his hesitation earlier, the move caught her off guard. An "oh" was all she was able to emit before his lips touched hers.

There's a moment of inaction, where she freezes for just a second, still caught in the surprise. Then her brain kicks in, with a jolt, and she returns the gesture, perhaps a bit too eagerly. If so, only because she wanted to make up for that moment of hesitation, to let Sora know she wasn't rejecting anything.

After that whole conversation, that's the last thing she wants him thinking.]

[ Sora swayed a bit under the force of the returned kiss. He let go of Kairi's hands but only so he could wrap his arms around her waist. This was perfect.

[ That same spark that he'd felt with Riku was there, different since it was Kairi, but he knew he'd made the right choice. He smiled into the kiss and parted his lips slightly to deepen it just the tiniest bit. He had a small idea of what was meant to happen in kissing, but he didn't want to rush this. ]

[Perfect, indeed. Even with the introduction of a tentative tongue. It's a foreign feeling, more so than the original kiss. Sure, she knew how this worked, too, but she had none of the experience to tell how to really go about it. So she'll follow Sora's lead and opened her lips beneath his, her toes curling in anticipation and anxiety.]

[ Sora's hand shifted a bit nervously on Kairi's back. His heart was pounding but it wasn't going to stop him. His touch was gentle, curious, and caring. ]

[A tentative hand curls against his chest as the other wraps low around his waist. It's all so new and strange, but it's with Sora, she reminds herself, so it's okay.

She wants to extend the kiss, and she almost does when her chest tightens and she realizes that she hasn't really been breathing. It's hard to imagine that she could forget something so simple, but she had been so caught up...

Regretfully, she has to pull away, just to catch her breath. With an inhale and splutter, her cheeks become a tad flushed. Yep, even Kairi's a bit conscious of what she's just done.]

[ Sora blushed as Kairi pulled away. The moment broken he realized what he'd done and though it was embarrassing the self satisfied smile on his face was hard to miss. Wouldn't Donald and Goofy be proud if they'd seen that? ]

Kairi...[ He put a hand behind his head and rubbed it a bit the look turning to one that was slightly sheepish now. He wasn't thinking about Riku right now, it was only Kairi in his thoughts. ]

Will you...[ Oh god was he actually going to ask? ] be my girlfriend?

[How long has she waited for him to ask her that? Or to that effect, anyway. There's a huge, excited grin on her face as she envelops Sora in a hug, so similar to the one she gave him back in the Castle That Never Was.]

Of course I will!

[ Sora was grinning from ear to ear when she hugged him. He wrapped his arms around Kairi in a tight squeeze the smile still on his face as he held her. His heart felt so full that it was almost bursting. This was the best he could have asked for, with the exception perhaps of Riku having agreed to this too, but for this moment Sora was more than happy with just Kairi and he. ]
