Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) it was Rin's flames that kept the shot from striking it's intended target. The power alone was enough to send the bullet off course, but not entirely. As he was charging forward he still wound up in the path of it, and it grazed the side of his head just hard enough for him to go down.

He flipped backwards, end over end and landed flat on his face, unmoving for the moment.
